I don't like this system. To play this properly I would need to be awake full 48h.

If sequential system suggested takes too long. Then we coukd have all leaders and nations under bidding simulatenously. One could have winning bid for only 1 nation and 1 civ (or 2 traits). We could state that auction is open at minimum 5 and at max 7 days and after 5 days you would at random time close the auction. If there are players without a leader/nation at that point they get randomly assigned.

There's a reason I suggested doing leaders/civs separately in this system earlier: if you are trying for synergy, doing leaders/civs together can really screw you up. For example if you are going for Org + a courthouse replacement, and then you get massively outbid on the civ, you are stuck with org at what may be a higher price than it's now worth to you.

Doing trait 1 then civ then trait 2 would probably strike an interesting balance.

Another thing, you can't have a time cutoff, that would be really unfair. You could get stuck with a random pick just because someone outbid you at the wrong time. I mean, that could be enough to make someone just abandon the game. It's necessary to keep the bidding going until everyone is bidding on a different item.

I completely agree that the 48 hour dutch auction seems poor. If you really need to do a Dutch auction it's important to do it completely live.

Main problem seems to be how to decide that auction is over so that the it doesn't take too long to finish. Dutch auction solves this problem, but getting everyone online for long enough perod is challenging. Ebay like systems solve this with end time and then bidding continues as long as there are new bids within some small time window from previous bid. I'm not sure that would work too well here when we've players from different time zones. Maybe the dutch version could work, if we make the time longer like a week and prices would be the same for 8h.

any chance we could actually use EBay?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Im pretty sure we could. One would had to go through their User Agreement, but I doubt they've anything against this. However this doesn't change the fact that fixed end time probably wouldn't be fair for everyone. It usually pays off to be patient i.e. waiting for the last moment and then bid. This makes it also hard to know how long it takes to actually finish the auction.

re ebay - can't you put in your ideal max and it will auto increase your current bid if someone bids over you but below your max?

I guess you can. I actually haven't used ebay, but similar national system that has this feature. After 2nd thought maybe this would be alright. We could arrange individual auctions for every trait and nation. Everybody also needs to register on ebay.

You guys seriously want to use actual Ebay for this? Who's paying all the listing and final value fees? Ebay takes something like a 2% cut, who wants to pay an actual price of $9.60 for a 480 bid on Huayna?

oh. Didn't know you had to pay for ebay. Finnish huuto.net seems way better then wink. To minimize fees cents instead of dollars could be used. Nevertheless auction system isn't worth it, if it isn't free of charge.
