RB Pitboss #1 SPOILER - Catherine of Sumeria

OK, here we go!

So let's start with a quick summary of how we got here:

Once the unrestricted leaders was chosen, kalin and I quickly came to the conclusion that we were more bothered about choice of Civ than Leader. We floatd a number of ideas, but eventually settled to a short-list of: Sumeria, Mali, and Zulu. As you can see they each have an early UU and an early UB.

We um'd and ah'd over the final choice, and it came right down to the wire before the decision was made to go with our first thought and choose Sumeria ... we both then had immediate second thoughts regarding Mali! duh Anyway, we were pretty happy to get our first choice.

The choice of leader was more problematic as we watched the build-up of aggressive opponent combinations. I quickly expressed a preference for IMP - rapid expansion with early/cheap courthouses, yes please! - though we revisited the option several times. We explored IND as an option - intending to go for Oracle into Metal Casting - Stalin, Louis (went fast), JC, Augustus, but kind-of lost faith in the option as we started to anticipate a need for defense.

We drifted towards going Aggressive ourselves - strongly considering both the Khans before they were snapped up - and eventually settling on Shaka as the best of the remaining AGGs.

I was still pushing for a land-grab strategy though: IMP settlers backed up with Vultures & Ziggurats. Eventually Catherine popped up as an option - Creative was going like hot cakes, but perfectly supports a strategy of quick expansion.

We debated for quite a while with the cautious sides of us favouring Shaka's AGG, but eventually the adventurous side of us (me?) won out and Catherine of Sumeria was born.

OK, so the start. Initial impressions are that we like it very much! bow

Corn (we start with Agri), river, lots & lots of forests, hills to be mined for production, a calendar happy ... oh, and Ivory for an extra early happy and eventual Elephants.

We discussed our early strategy - and I worldbuildered up a crude version of the start - and have come up with the following plan (assuming no exceptions tiles in the BFC fog:

Research - Hunting->Mining->BW

Builds - Warrior->switch to Scout at Hunting->complete Warrior (coincides to growth to size3)->Worker

There's a bit of MM detail in their as well, but the Worker should come out a couple of turns before BW completes.

The initial Warrior will head out on long-range scouting mission, the part-built Warrior can be completed in 2t at size2, so if instant defense is needed, we can have it. The Scout is for expoloration ASAP since Sullla mentioned that the map is big, and we know that Huts are on.

Of course nothing survive the encounter with actual play, so we'll see how things develop. :D

Hey Dreylin/Kalin

I'm happy to be lurking here & hope I don't annoy too much :D

By the above statement does that just mean you created a similar start with your own file through the use of worldbuilder? Forgive the noob question, as I'm not familiar with how worldbuilder works, just that I believe it allows full view of the entire map, editing etc...

As well by the sounds of things it seems like you will settle in place (or have already). Did you give any thought to making the city coastal (it looks like the water tiles are probably seabound)?

You're very welcome! It's nice to know there's someone out there reading!

Pretty much, yeah. I started a new game with a Huge map (I used Big&Small), entered Worldbuilder and looked for a similar-looking area, then did the tedious transcribing of features from the screenie to the site in the save.

I had to speculate about everything outside the tile-bleed of the Fog edge, so I may go back and update after we can see a bit further, but it really just allowed us to play through a couple of starting strategies and plan a bit ahead.

We did consider moving, but came to the conclusion that there were too many reasons not to do so. We lose 2t moving to a new spot, we would likely lose the Corn from our BFC; note that we have Agriculture, but not Fishing. Also we would have to move the Warrior South to have a look first, which is almost certainly a wasted turn of exploration.

So yes, we have decided to settle in place.

Heh, I also thought that huts were on! Oh well, as Dreylin said there are 10 civs out there! In a sense I don't mind it so much as it would allow us to focus better on exploring for civs, city sites rather than hut chasing.

@Athlete: You are very welcome to come by and comment. I don't have that much experience in MP, but Dreylin does smile so it should be instructive and hopefully entertaining. Dreylin already did an amazing job of summarizing our discussions.
