[SPOILERS] Dantski's Pitboss Thread

T50(51) screenshots on page 11

Hooray my own thread.

In case any lurkers are interested how a terrible player like myself plans for a game like this then here you go.

1. Map will essentially be on big, weird shaped continent OR multiple continents which are all reachable via galley (as has already been disclosed).

2. Map will have a relatively even spread of resources. While having a mapmaker is great for balancing, I'd personally have liked the game to be a simple vote on map type (say fractal) and let the AI generate us a map. While it will no doubt be unbalanced, I figure part of the fun would be to do your best in your position.

3. I REALLY wanted huts and random events. While of course some additional luck could be priceless to us weaker players, its also something I really enjoy in the game. Raging barbs is nice, but at least we have some barbs instead of none.

4. What Civ/Leader to pick?

Straight after signing up for this game I wanted to simply play with Restricted leaders and I planned to choose Elizabeth. When unrestricted won I toyed with the idea of role-playing instead with Boudica (incessantly war with a very likely to be picked Rome). While the idea was nice, I don't like Boudica/Celts traits + UU + UB so I scrapped that idea.

Then I mistakenly looked at the UB's in the Civilopedia and thought the Viking Trading Post was a replacement for Harbours not Lighthouses and was planning to run with Elizabeth there for 3 food 3 commerce coast tiles. An unfortunate mistake there and if the previous players had picked their Civs/Leaders quicker I would have been playing the Vikings.

After that I found myself a reasonable fighting pick (Shaka of Sumeria) but warring is really not my strong suit and in the previous 2 RB multiplayer games, players were spaced out a little too much for rushing.

Then I went back the roleplay idea with Isabella, Expansive + Spiritual are decent traits so I figured I could grab Buddhism, spread it around to a few people and try to encourage religious wars! However I felt during a test game that religion spreading would hamper my growth too much to be worth it.

Finally during that test game I noticed the Imperialistic AI's spread super fast and I figured I'd try an Imperialistic leader for this game, to back up rapid expansion I decided to go with Mali too (hey skirmishers will deal with any quecha rush quite well!).

So thats it, I figured on going for Mali and Julius Caesar in that order.

5. Figuring out how the game will go

Well since tech trading is off, Financial was always going to be very popular and Expansive and Creative were also likely to figure. I'm afraid that without tech trading this could turn everyone off early / midgame warring as someone who spends too many hammers on war will inevitably fall behind in tech and pay the price later.

I plan on signing very few NAP's this game to try and leave myself open to opportunistic attacks on others. However this doesn't mean I won't break a NAP if I feel I can quickly overrun someone.

Also since I am not Financial I will HAVE to get more cities down than those Civs in order to compete, Imperialistic choice is the way to go here and if I get Julius it won't cripple my economy too badly, with Mali's Skirmishers I hope to deter any early attacks and deal with Barbs easily.

6. In terms of who I'd try to work with this game, I'd definitely favour a non Financial Civ as a buddy with the reasoning that by working together we could keep them in check or kill them. Either works for me :neenernee

Thats more or less all I can think of. I don't expect things to turn out perfectly, but I hope to get a decent amount of land and be somewhat influential in the outcome of the game

Just some thoughts about everyones leader + civ choices.

athlete4life10 + kalin - Willem (Cre/Fin) of the Ottomans (Janissary/Hamman)

They are one of the 'weaker' teams in the game and have gone for a builder strategy. I'd be happy to work with them, but then again they'd make a good target once my land is settled. I'm guessing the choice of the Ottomans is largely based on athlete's experiences in the PBEM.

Broker33 + Plako - Gandhi (Phi/Spi) of Korea (Hwacha/Seowon)

They are virtually guaranteed to go for and get an early religion (korea starts with mysticism). Since they picked a Philosophical leader and noone picked an industrious one, I'd also expect them to have a run at Stonehenge or Oracle. Korea is one of the best Civ's in the game regarding UU + UB and was certainly one I considered. Plako is a complete unknown to me, but they could be a good ally.

Jowy + Yazilliclick - Pacal (Exp/Fin) of Greece (Phalanx/Odeon)

A little puzzled over their choice of Greece, but it looks like they are another builder. Possibly they will skip archery and try to rely on bronze working + copper. I'm unlikely to want to ally with them as they are unknown players to me + financial.

DMOC + Nakor - Darius (Fin/Org) of the Holy Roman Empire (Landsknecht/Rathaus)

I might have picked Darius myself if they hadn't. I could definitely see they trying to Oracle CoL and then expand like crazy. I think not picking an Imperialistic leader for doing that is a gamble though. They are both unknowns to me and notm y first choice of allies.

Iamjohn + Kodii + Zevis - Mehmed (Exp/Org) of Inca (Quechua/Terrace)

They took well over 24 hours to make their leader + civ choices which tells me they don't have a leader in the group yet. I suspect diplomacy with them could be slow which might be frustrating as they look like a good team to work with.

Speaker + Sullla - Elizabeth (Fin/Phi) of India (Fast Worker/Mausoleum)

The obvious favourites, with no industrious Civs they may fancy getting early religion + a prophet wonder. I just hope if they do, the nearby teams settle faster. I expect to see Moses born in Delhi. I am unlikely to want them as a major player at the end.

Mortius - Ragnar (Agg/Fin) of Zulu (Impi/Ikhanda)

Had a significant disagreement with him about NAP's. His picks suggest he wants to rush early but at the same time have a builder backup in financial should things not work out. Might work with him but will be very mindful of being rushed.

LiPing - Shaka (Agg/Exp) of Rome (Praetorian/Forum)

If he isn't rushing I don't know what he was smoking...

Don't know him well, but I can't see him being a factor in the endgame. I'd be happy to work with him.

Regoarrarr + darrelljs + sunrise089 - Peter (Exp/Phi) of Byzantium (Cataphract/Hippodrome)

I see them as the main opposition to Sullla + Speaker. Having hippodrome means culture slider will add some serious happiness add that to the possibility of churning out artists are they considering trying to win via culture? They might run a heavy specialist economy and go for pyramids too. They will be in serious trouble if they are next to one of our aggressors.

So most of that was probably obvious already, I guess I'll work with or attack anyone if its a positive for me.

Just a note as to your analysis of the Byzantines: Oddly, although I guess historically appropriate, Hippodromes do not allow Artists (or any other specialists).

Hippodromes will double the happiness that is normally associated with using the culture slider that way. The artists reference was to the simple fact that Expansive health + possible bonus happiness that hippodrome and culture slider will provide = Lots of big cities possible = lots of specialists possible. If you're running the culture slider + producing great people, cultural victory becomes a serious possibility.

But I'm probably overthinking it.... bang

Here's the starting position

Not sure what to make of this start. I really didn't want a coastal (I'm assuming its coast or large lake) (I don't know if its a fresh water lake) start so I could focus on worker techs early on. A 4 food rice isn't brilliant for growing though so I may have to hook the fish up first.

I also start with fur, obviously I'll want my skirmishers out quickly so I can hook it up quickly, but its not great in helping tile yield.

I start with mining + the wheel but I will want a workboat asap to work the fish. So I will go warrior first and research fishing, switching to a workboat as soon as I can. After that hunting and finish the warrior and then I'm not sure.
Should I get archery after that or grab bronze working? Normally I ignore archery until after I see no copper, but skirmishers are great for barb control. I'm really not wanting to ignore forest chops + slavery too long and after that I still need agriculture to hook up the rice.

Or do I need agriculture early on? The rice when farmed will add a pathetic +1 food, maybe its better to just grab pottery and get early granary and cottages in play.

Whatever the case, I'm not chasing early religion or wonders.

Warrior moved onto the forest and revealed nothing of interest, so I settle in place and reveal.... nothing of interest.

The water is coast, might just be a large lake though

Kinda tempted to take a dedicated lurk on your thread, it looks interesting! Plus there's only 1 of you and theres loads on some of those other teams.

Is the rest of your start terrain pretty normal? What's in the 2 squares north of the start?

I had a contemplate about your start, and have some random thoughts, happy to throw em in, but equally happy to shut up if you'd rather!

hi bob!

Yep only one of me, I'm happier playing solo making my own mistakes than get myself involved in heavy discussion on perfect micromanagement in cities etc.

Both the 2 squares N and E were grassland + plains tiles. Since moving would add useless peak tiles, I saw no reason to not settle in place.

Happy to hear your thoughts on the game.

Think you make a lot of sense with that way of looking at the game. Who needs a commitee!

Definitely can't think of any reason why someone would want to move. You have my symapthies on the unwatered rice - phewww. Figure the fish is very nice though!

I really like the idea of skirmisher/imperialistic settlers, think that could be great for a speedy rex... Got lots of potential? smile

Was idly wondering about tech. Fishing just seems all good! Figure BW is lovely, but the small number of choppable forests and the huge boost using them for settlers is intersting. I was thinking that hunting seemed really strong - furs, on the way to archery and wondered how useful an early scout might be for contacts/city spam spots?

Cheers!

Aside from my starting warrior I don't plan to build scouts anytime soon. In the previous pitboss people helpfully directed teams towards others and hopefully the same will occur here.

I need to find my closest 2-3 neighbours and scout the land between ASAP then plant down 6-8 cities (maybe 1 or 2 more) before the AD times. Naturally if I start next to Rome much grovelling will take place!bow

After some more though, I've decided to ignore BW for now and get hunting and archery next. Starting with the wheel + mining will give my worker plenty to do.
