[SPOILERS] PB7: Winning The Hard Way - Mao Plays Craps

Fresh off a weekend of gambling in New Orleans, Mao is ready to apply the lessons he learned at the craps tables to his opponents in the field of battle:

Lesson 1: learn to love the RNG.
2: if you believe hard enough you will succeed beyond measure.
3: if the pitboss is looking at you suspiciously it is time to find a new table, or possibly a new casino (related to civ this one probably means to be wary of your opponents)
4: it pays off to do things the hard way.
5: know your enemy and when to walk away from the table
6: cold dice or bad luck are the casino's second best friends.
8: never say the number I've skipped (civ corrolary: never mention the RNG when attacking or it will betray you).
9: never forget to play your safe bets.
10: an incompetent player is easy money and the casino's best friend. Don't be that guy.

These are a few things I learned this weekend in my first trip to a casino. Rule # 11 is to leave while you're up but civ has no corrolary because in civ you sometimes have to fight it out to the bitter end. If you do that in the casino you'll end up calling the addiction hotline, so it's not applicable here.

Any degenerate gamblers lurking out there, what other lessons from the craps tables can Mao use in PB7, Winning The Hard Way? (Oh, and maybe this one goes without saying...don't go all in on a horn bet!)

That's some fine analysis, Number One. Too bad we're not a mining start. Once we move the warrior and scout we can figure out where to settle, but that PHF is tempting as it grabs both resources. I think the rules say we should have a better food source than a plains cow, though, so there must be something usable under one of those fog tiles. Just have to go get it.

Opening roll, baby..... SEVEN!!!

I'll play when I go home for lunch.

I predict corn. :neenernee

I likewise predict you will go deep with your scout and warrior.
I further predict that you will research AH.
I lastly predict that you will build a warrior.

I hypothesize (with high probability) that you will tech mining and BW after AH.

That was easy. Give me a chip and a chair. smoke

Posted a day late because when I went to post yesterday the server was busy...again.

This isn't Twitter, no hash tags required. nono

As for the turn report, I took pictures during lunch and have been busy all afternoon. Here's the real report, without silly words.

Our capital:

Demographics (mid turn):

I think the demos are useful for a making a rough comparison of how we're doing, since they're only representative of a particular moment during the turn and are subject to change as players log in and do things in the game.

banghead....and enough with the server being too busy...it isn't so busy that the www service isn't able to display a static page. So just what the hell is the server doing that it can't serve up the right webpage when there are obviously enough resources to display something (i.e., not totally bandwidth saturated...under heavy CPU load? Anyway, enough rant on that. It's just a pain in the ass.

Think SQL database timeout. There are few possible reasons for that, we can't do anything about it because only responsive admin with access to people responsible for hosting is currently hospitalized.

By the way, this is us:

Scouted with both units, the plan is to go deep rather than circle the capital. I'm building a garrison warrior for defense while the city grows to 2. Research AH, build a worker, then beeline BW and get dog soldiers up as soon as possible, both for defense against an axe rush and because hopefully one of our scouting units will find something worth sending the dogs after. Maybe a lightly protected worker, or capital. You never know.

Demos, mostly irrelevant. I'm in the habit of taking a picture of F9 from my PBEM thread but I guess there isn't a lot of utility in it here since I'm not going to track this very closely.

I've played many more games on quick lately than on normal speed so my opening seems painfully slow. Growing to size 2 will take 10 turns, warrior done in 7 for defense. I guess I can put a few turns into another warrior until I grow, I have no doubt I'll need them when people come scouting in force. I should have 8 foodhammers available for building the worker at size 2, so 8 turns to build it. That would get me to T18 with farming and AH techs ready for the worker to start improvements. Pasture the cows and farm the wheat, then I'll be ready to build another worker or few to deforest the Native lands. Whether the trees should be converted into dog soldiers or settlers/workers/whatever will be determined by what my scouts find and what is happening at the time. By then I could have someone rushing me already, so who knows?

Also, how early is it worth researching Mysticism for our crappy monument replacement? I guess the +XP for archery units is good for level 3 archers (if I build them in a city with a barracks). Coupled with Mao's protective trait that will let me build heavily promoted archers for city defense or...well I can't imagine much of an offensive with them. Drill promoted? lol If that is the line of reasoning it looks like it would wait until after Archery. Or until I need to pop borders.

One possibility is that the server is busy pumping out spam or doing who knows what for whoever has infiltrated it, tying up system resources. But enough hostile speculation, I know KoP has more important things to deal with, I was just frustrated about having to email my post to myself and submit it the next day. Petty, in comparison, sure. But maybe we'll get these things fixed before too long.

To help keep up my post count I'll post an addendum rather than an edit. In the previous screen shots you can see I have 26 gold in the bank, from a hut I popped on T0. Not as nice as the techs that ASM and slowcheetah got, but still nice enough. I forget what difficulty level we're on (monarch?) and I'm not connected to check, but it could always go worse....

Quote:GOODY: Contains a set of GoodyType. When entering a goody hut, the result is randomly picked between the entries in this set. The same item can be repeated, if you want it more likely to be picked. The possible values are specified in the Assets\Xml\GameInfo\CIV4GoodyInfo.xml file.

So we had a 20% chance of getting low gold, which is what we got. Compared to ASM and slowcheetah's 10% chance of grabbing a tech. The randomness will indeed be fun in this game. It's better than using my one <iFreeWinsVsBarbs> against a barbarian attack. Nevermind, research shows that on monarch it's zero free wins vs. barbs, prince is where you get one free win. I need to find out if this is prince or monarch so I'll know if I need to care about the first barb encounter.

I need more turns to play, this is too much discussion about not much. Just disregard that it was almost me on T1 to pull a PYFT. I think I only beat ASM and Lewwyn in getting the turn in. alright
