OK, so I'm on an organisational kick this morning, and this game is occupying my thoughts. My idea for this thread is as an index/summary thread (like scooter suggested in the main Demogame thread), that would include any plans we make and also a summary every 10 turns or so of things that've happened domestically & abroad. I see it as being brief and on-point, with links to where discussion etc happened. The sort of thing that's a PITA to construct after the fact, but that we might be able to keep up with if we start now. And personally, I'd kinda lost track of what our initial plan was, but that might just be me smile However I have had to read through 4 different threads to be sure I'd seen what was said & I'm still not quite sure I've found it all lol

It doesn't matter who posts stuff - I'll start the ball rolling with a summary of what our current plan is, and I'd quite like to do the Turn 10 report, just to give an idea of what is inside my head, but other than those two posts please please feel free to jump in & write them yourselves smile

I'd rather keep the discussion out of this thread, so if I (or anyone writing these) gets something wrong/misrepresents something can you put it in some other appropriate thread & then I can edit the post here to put things right smile

Oh, and if everyone else thinks this is a useless waste of time, just say - I won't take offense & I shan't bother with it either lol

  • Warrior had a look at the NE, followed by a brisk return home after Gillette's borders were spotted.
  • Scout moved generally NW & W, with a plan to meet others. Gillette's borders were spotted on turn 4, contact made turn 5 & the scout retreated so they couldn't see it. Filled in area between us and is now heading S around our capital.

Bronze Working was researched on T13, started to research Agriculture. Initially the only Copper visible was on the midline between us and Gillette frown First Fast Worker produced on T15, started to build a second. We revolted to Slavery on T17 which will lose us 4h overflow on our second Fast Worker for "the cheapest revolt we're ever going to get". The Pigs were mined finishing T18 at which point we started to work them instead of the floodplains (giving us 5h/turn, which provides an extra hammer while building our second Fast Worker due to being Exp). The FW then moved one tile East to start chopping the forest there.

Red dotted line shows the movement of the Scout - defogged the area around the Stone followed by exploring to the south & east of the city. Found a second Copper in our backlines jive on T20.

Settling discussions & micro plans focussed on gaining the use of the Gold tile on the midline as quickly as possible, possible city sites for our second city are the Pink dot or 1S of it. Other city sites discussed included the Green dot on the Stone & settling for the northern Copper (which is no longer a priority as of T20).

TEAM: Finished Animal Husbandry on T15. Grew capital to size 2 and built a Warrior T19. Possibly met both Gillette & Pirates by T11. Worker T13ish?

Menagerie: Finished Animal Husbandry on T14. Built a Warrior on T16, Worker was probably T11ish. Grew capital to size 2 T17. Given when they grew, when they improved a tile & when they produced their Warrior I think they settled on a PH and had a 4 yield tile in their BFC.

Gillette: Finished Animal Husbandry on T11. Built a Worker T12. Grew capital to size 2 T18. Researched The Wheel on T19. They've met at least one other civ because they spent EPs on them rather than us for several turns. Their scout came to see us on T20, approaching from the NW (potentially having not seen the Gold tile? Hard to say). Communication has been slow - partly due to Merovech forgetting us and partly due to us not getting our collective act together while Darrell was away. Relations continue tentatively friendly, with discussion of possible co-operation. Dicussion between posts 56 and 89 of the diplo thread; messages in posts 57, 77, 80, 87 and 88.

Domestic Affairs

After Bronze Working, we'd started to research Agriculture which finished on T22. The Wheel followed this on T29, and after much discussion and changing plans we are currently researching Animal Husbandry.

On T22 we produced our second Fast Worker. This was followed up by building a Warrior, whilst chopping into a Settler. The Warrior was built on T28, at which point Caipirinha grew to size 2. After that we switched to building as well as chopping the Settler, due T32. Our borders expanded at the end of T24.

Worker micro as in this picture:

We worked the pigs from T20 to T23, then switched to the corn once it was farmed (T24). When Caipirinha grew (T28) we started to work both corn & pigs.

The plan (as of T30) is to expand as fast as possible, and not chase any wonders in particular. This is subject to change, and we've gone backwards & forwards on it several times already lol The key options are/were:
  • Rex rex rex! - plays to the strengths of our leader/civ choice, downside is obviously that other teams have a better chance of getting the wonders.
  • Build GLH - this would have required researching Fishing instead of Animal Husbandry at this point, and we generally felt we had too much chance to lose the race and would lose too much momentum if we did.
  • Build Pyramids - we do have that Stone in the SW, but we really want to be expanding in a NW direction towards the centre & the other teams so it's an otherwise unappealing city site. General feeling at the moment is that we're better off not sacrificing to race for the Pyramids, but if they don't fall for another 40 or so turns then we'll re-visit the idea.

Exploration

Red line is the movement of our scout. Blue line is the movement of Gillette's scout from T20 to T24, and dotted afterwards for putative movement. It died to TEAM's Warrior during their T27. Dotted white line is the putative movements of TEAM's Warrior T27 to T29, we saw it on T28 on the tile NE of the fish and on T30 it is on the tile NW of the fish. Yellow lines indicate the negotiated Neutral Zone between us & Gillette. TEAM's borders are indicated by the solid white lines.

The red dots indicate proposed city sites - initially we were strongly considering settling the southern dot near the Gold. But later we have decided that it is more important to expand towards the centre of the landmass, and thus are planning to settle the more northern dot first. Hence the researching of Animal Husbandry.

Contact establised with TEAM on T28, we have switched EPs to them but have still only got Gillette's graphs:

TEAM: Located to our north. Researched Mining T21. Grew to size 3 T23, and borders expanded T24. They have a single water tile in their third ring, all other tiles are land tiles (just like us). They met Gillette T26, and killed their scout on T27. We made contact with them on T28. Initial diplo looked promising despite our doubts because of their aggression towards Gillette, but subsquently turned into just meme pictures & T31 brought a war declaration from them frown Diplo discussions between posts 143 and 208 of the diplo thread (only a few posts are actually to do with TEAM). Gillette: We now know they have no water tiles in their BFC. Their capital grew to size 3 on T22 & they also produced a Warrior that turn. They researched Pottery T28. Diplomacy continued friendly & slow (more on our side than theirs). We negotiated a basic settling agreement with a NAP lasting until & including T70. The Neutral Zone is shown on the map above - neither team will settle cities between those two yellow lines, Gillette will not settle east of those lines, Trolls will not settle west of them. We are also not to spend EPs on each other once graphs are obtained. In addition we have an agreement not to share geographical about each other's capitals with other teams without permission. They were keen to position themselves as wanting to settle towards Menagerie rather than us, and wanted to encourage us to settle towards TEAM even before TEAM killed their scout. As the cliff-hanger in the T30 report said, TEAM declared war on us on T31. We've tried to minimise the effects on our plans, but obviously there have had to be some. As a result the mood is somewhat pessimistic about our long term chances of winning, particularly as there is one team not involved in any early hostilities (Gillette) so they're going to have a much easier ride of it than the rest of us. The biggest deviation from our prefered path is that we had to whip an Axe out of Caipirinha on T37, losing us significant population.

Nonetheless, despite TEAM pissing in our sandbox we have still managed to settle our second city (Bloody Mary) on T34 next to the NW copper as planned. We're also hoping to take what advantage we can of the fact that TEAM are being hostile and try to settle as much of "their" land as we can.

We were considering the pink dot site, as a real in-your-face settlement. But in the end cooler heads prevailed (i.e. plako smile ) and our plan is to settle the red dot first, and then the pink dot.

Since T30 we've researched Animal Husbandry (finishing end of T39), revealing horses between us and TEAM, but none in the rest of the area we've scouted. We've also grown back our whipped population and nearly finished another Settler in Caipiriniha and finished 2 Workers in Bloody Mary by T40 with the help of some chops. Worker micro is as in the following screenshot, I hope it's reasonably clear; C=chopped, R=roaded, M=mined, p=pre-improved. L=looked, we sent a worker a step ahead to scout our city site, due to all our military being occupied. Yes, we were at war and sent out a Settler escorted only by two Workers lol

Exploration

Our scout (red line on the map) took a look at Pitboss3 (TEAM's capital) and then wandered off to meet the Pirates T38 (in orange). We're now on the way to meet Menagerie to complete the set. The dotted white line maps out approximately the midlines of the land between the teams - knowing where four of the capitals are I've drawn out the pentagon then drawn lines from each point bisecting the opposite line. I did this completely by eye and one point is missing, so there will be a high degree of inaccuracy but it gives us an estimate. (And hopefully this keeps Zakalwe happy, he's not been pleased with the previous midline I drew between Gillette & us lol) It only now occurs to me that we don't know for sure that that was the edge of the Pirates capital we saw, but it looks about right compared to the other 3 we know.

Cities

Our poor capital only recently returned to size 2. Initially at size 2 it worked Corn & Pigs, except on T34 it worked Corn & Floodplains to put a single hammer into a warrior just in case. Then after the whip on T37 it worked the Corn until growing back onto the Pigs as well.

Bloody Mary (settled T34), worked the sheep until the copper was mined (eot35), and then the copper thereafter.

Red & blue lines are our warriors, green line is our Axe. White & black are their warriors. No blows have been exchanged, clearly the odds never looked good enough for them either. Since the appearance of the Axe they've been backing away.

They researched Bronze Working T32 (revolted into Slavery T34), and something else T38 - possibly Archery, possibly Mysticism. They've settled a new city on T35 (only 9 extra tiles of land in its BFC) which grew to size 2 on T39. They've built another Warrior, another Worker, and possibly another military unit or possibly yet another Worker. Diplo has been restricted to a chat and a selection of funny pictures. Domestic Affairs

This last 10 turns has been dominated by the war with TEAM, but we did continue to explore, meeting Menagerie units in amongst the Pirates' cities.

The red line here shows the movement of our scout - orange dots are Pirates units we saw, green are Menagerie and blue is Gillette. After meeting Menagerie our scout returned via the centre to see what was there and is probably going to go and have a look around TEAM's land again after this.

We'd finished researching Animal Husbandry on T40, and since then we have researched Hunting (for men with pointy sticks - we were concerned that TEAM might be building Chariots) and Pottery (for the economy, obviously enough).

Cities

Our capital has been size 2 for these whole 10 turns, working the Corn & the mined Pigs. It built a Settler at EOT46 (which settled Bitter on T49), aided by a chop. Since then it has been building an Axe whilst growing.

This city has been growing and producing our army. On T41 it worked the newly pastured Sheep and started to build an Axe which was finished with a chop at EOT43. Next build was a Spearman finishing at EOT49. Bloody Mary grew EOT45, working the Sheep & the newly pastured Cow from T46. Grew again EOT48, working the Sheep, Cow & Copper after that. Short term plan here is a little more military.

The original plan for our third city (as discussed above) was to settle 2N of where the city ended up, on T50. Unfortunately on T48 TEAM settled Losing in our face, so our plan was forced to change. We settled Bitter T49 and immediately started to build an Axe. This was finished with the aid of two chops at EOT50. Bitter worked the unimproved Corn throughout. Short term plan here is a granary next.

War with TEAM

Breaking this out into its own section, as it really has been the dominant theme of these 10 turns. At the start of the period TEAM had two warriors harassing us. We were doing our best to ignore these - building just sufficient military to keep our workforce & settler safe, with a general plan of settling up some of TEAM's land given they weren't willing to talk about a fair border agreement.

However, this changed when they settled Losing so close to us. It seems that TEAM's gameplan from the outset has involved first getting some sort of NAP & border agreement with one neighbour (Pirates) and then pink dotting their other neighbour (us, to our misfortune). Menagerie seemed to think that Pirates & TEAM had been at war at least at some point, so perhaps there was some aggressive "persuasion" involved in TEAM & Pirates peaceful relations but whatever it was it has been effective. TEAM feel free to move almost all their army towards us, leaving a single Warrior to protect their first two cities while the rest of their units are on our borders (or in Losing, which is practically the same thing).

The agreement between TEAM & Pirates has also had its knock on effects on the rest of the world, Pirates have settled up on Menagerie claiming the gold tile between them with their second city. This doesn't appear to've pleased Menagerie and those two teams have been at war. Menagerie appear to have decided that enough is enough and it is time to do something about the Pirates - they've built 5 axes over the last couple of turns generating the largest army with 40,000 of their power score coming from units. Pirates are responding, and have the joint second largest army (22,000 power from units, equal with us).

TEAM's army consisted of 2 Archers & 4 Warriors - two of those Warriors are no more, one they disbanded when we boxed it into a corner, the other killed by one of our Axes after it took out one of our Warriors.

Over the 10 turns (not all existing simultaneously) we have had 1 Spear, 3 Axes and 2 Warriors. Both our Warriors were killed just outside Losing, giving one of their Archers a promo.

So losses are identical so far, and we are in a good position to choke Losing albeit not kill it just yet as they have managed to get both Archers into the city. Our army is more powerful (by soldiers score) than theirs, which is a minus as it means we've had to divert more foodhammers into military than they have. But also a plus as hopefully we'll be able to make their third city fairly useless.

Negotiations were opened up initially by TEAM on T50 and then again by us around T51 (slightly outside the remit of this T50 report, but I think it makes sense to add it in here). The discussion during T50 was inconclusive, Lewwyn appeared to be talking to us because some in their team wanted to but they didn't actually to want to offer anything (literally nothing, we held off on playing the turn for about 20 hours to give them time and no-one said a thing). The T51 discussion was if anything less productive - we asked them to make an offer of what they'd want in exchange for giving us Losing. We thought their offer favoured them too much, so counter-offered something that favoured us. TEAM (in the person of Krill) declared this an insult and seem to have decided not to bother finding common ground. Perhaps they have something up their sleeves that will make us regret this? Perhaps not, I'm sure we'll find out soon wink As a personal opinion I'm reading frustration in the "negotiations" so far, as if their plan was based on the assumption that other teams would capitulate at an early show of force and they're getting exasperated at our failure to do so. I could be way off base here tho smile

Our plan going forward is to choke Losing as best we can, pillaging the road running back to their other cities and preventing them hooking up horses. Then we'll tech up to Iron Working or HBR and kill that city. After that, maybe we'll talk to them again?

The above maps out the unit movements for the last 10 turns. I hope it's not too confusing to read, the lines are generally labelled next to the starting position and red lines are us while white lines are TEAM. Axe 1 chased off their Warrior 1 before moving up to Bitter where it arrived on T50. Warrior 1 was part of the Worker/Settler escort for settling Bitter then ended up 2W of Losing on T49 where it died to TEAM's Warrior 3 (losing a coinflip battle frown ). Warrior 2 did much the same, ending its life on T49 one tile north of Warrior 1. It was killed by TEAM's Archer 1, giving it a promo which is unused as of T51. Axe 2 was born EOT43 and also formed part of the Worker/Settler escort. It then avenged the death of Warrior 1 before moving next to Losing. The spearman was born EOT49 and has just moved around Bloody Mary's BFC so far. Axe 3 was born in Bitter EOT50 so hasn't moved anywhere yet. Their Archer 1 killed our Warrior 2, and is moving towards Losing - it will make it there before we can attack with the help of a road their 2 workers have built on T51. Archer 2 showed its face then moved into Losing.

We got Pirates graphs EOT48, and are now spending our EPs on Menagerie to get their graphs.

TEAM

Tech researched T38 must've been Archery, techs since are possibly Pottery T44 and Mysticism T47. They've built (that I know of) 2 Archers (T41, T44) and a Warrior (T45). They have also built a Settler, and potentially 2 more Workers. They settled their new city (Losing) on T48.

At war with Pirates, but despite this they managed to build a wonder (Stonehenge) and are now building up an impressive army. They researched Mysticism T40, probably Agriculture T46 and Fishing T48. They have built (as well as Stonehenge finishing T44) a Warrior, a Barracks and 5 Axes. Our diplo with them has mostly consisted of saying hello. Gillette

They must be pleased at all the war in this game, as it doesn't involve them wink Since T40 they've teched BW (T42), and probably Agri (T48). They've also built 2 Warriors on T49. Mostly they've grown, nice & happily. Our diplo with them has involved us telling them we've met other people and them saying nothing back. This doesn't really bode well :-/ NAP runs out T70.

Their second city seemed a way away from their capital, and their GNP graph seems to suggest they're suffering either from that or from their war with Menagerie. Researched Archery T43 and possibly Fishing T49. T48 they (probably) built 2 Archers & T50 they (probably) built 2 Archers & a Chariot. Or maybe an Axe and a Chariot - 10k worth of units. Our diplo with them involved trying to point out they could take advantage of TEAM's weak homeland defences, and Pirates dodging the issue - we're reading this as a sign of a close relationship.

Conclusion of the War with TEAM

Having calculated we had a window of opportunity on Turn 58 when we could attack after the city had grown, but before they could whip a third Archer we continued to plan towards capturing TEAM's city (Losing). We figured we could get 4 Axes & a Spear in position to attack on that turn, which would maybe have good enough odds. Worth a try, anyway.

However around Turn 53 plako managed to start actual negotiations with TEAM. He & Lewwyn chatted a few times, and thrashed out a deal that neither side was entirely happy with so is probably fair lol. TEAM as a whole didn't accept it before we played Turn 54, but Lewwyn decided to unilaterally accept it prior to our playing Turn 55. The deal is as follows:

Quote:NAP to T101
Open Borders, No RoP without additional agreement.

TEAM:
Capture worker T55 and offer Peace + Gift Losing

Trolls:
Build Settler T60 and settle site 2 East of northern deer after. Gift city that turn.
Gift worker ~T81

Border Agreement:
Trolls will settle Marble site, TEAM will settle Stone site, to wit:

Trolls settle 2 S of northern Sheep. 2nd ring food (sheep, deer) may not be 1st ring settled. Sheep and Deer may be 2nd ring contested.

TEAM will have a city 2 East of the deer.

No settling on the peninsula area East of Losing before T101 unless a deal is reached.
Current tentative settling plan includes Trolls on PH 2S of furs and having the furs being contested. Possibly having TEAM settle the hill west of the stone and then having Trolls settle south of that again if food is present.

Trades:
Possible 10T marble and stone trades back and forth.

The above picture shows the proposed border cities - existing cities (as of T54) have solid lines and coloured in BFCs, proposed cities have dotted lines. The eastern cities are tentative pending further discussion prior to T101.

Domestic Affairs

After we got peace with TEAM we could return to planning for the future. We've decided the the Pyramids should be our next major goal, with a short term goal of settling the Gold city between us & Gillette as soon as we can. We also need libraries, both for culture (particularly in the border with TEAM) and for science as we anticipate our economy tanking when the Gold city is settled.

Cities

(This last is the city formerly known as Losing.)

Foreign Affairs

We now have graphs on everyone:

Global Politics

Gillette remain the only team who have not gone to war, but their power graph is starting to creep up. This is probably because the other wars are over. Ours with TEAM is documented above. Menagerie took a city from Pirates on Turn 55 (the one that Pirates had settled next to the Gold between the teams), albeit with quite a few losses. Peace was signed shortly after.

Domestic Affairs

Peace has reigned over the last 10 turns. Our goals were to grow, and to plan for the Pyramids - Zakalwe generated a micro plan that gives us a 1 turn Pyramids build on T79 (detailed here and here).

We settled the city for TEAM on T64 as required by the peace treaty, and settled WIFOM next to the Gold resource between us and Gillette on T66. Writing was finished on T61, and since then we've been stockpiling gold until we have enough to research Mathematics.

Cities

The descriptions of the cities and our plans for them written by Zakalwe on Turn 69, in this post.

The North:

The South:

Horse's Neck:

This is the city we got from TEAM in our peace settlement. It's about to complete a library, and will then grow to size 5 on a Monument (gold will be connected next turn, to keep it happy). Once it hits size 5, it will start working two scientists along with the three resource tiles and remain in that configuration until T79. When the Monument completes, it starts a settler, halting growth at size 5.

Bitter:

This is the next door neighbor of Horse's Neck, and just completed a library. It has more whip anger than Horse's Neck, so it will need to halt growth at size 4 for a while. The plan here is to work the corn, cows, and cottages until the axeman completes, and then switch to a settler and hire two scientists, right before it grows to size 5. (Note: It also works a single scientist on T70.) When the whip anger is about to run out on T76, Bitter will switch to a chariot (or something) to allow growth, picking up a riverside cottage tile in addition to its two scientists.

Bloody Mary:

This was our second city, and is destined to be a cottage city, with all its riverside tiles. We want to grow this city to size 5 and work riverside cottages. The challenge here was to find time to actually build those cottages before rushing south with our workers to chop out the pyramids. Bloody Mary will complete that library just as it hits size 5, at which point it will build a worker that completes on T78, in time to participate in the chopfest. It will only be working resource tiles and riverside cottages.

Caipirinha:

This is our capital, which is pretty solid even if it's been somewhat underdeveloped ever since it was forced to whip an axe in response to TEAM's aggression. It will have to go another 10 turns without much worker love, working that wine farm at size 5, rather than a cottage. The plan here is to grow on the chariot build, and at size 5 put two turns of production into a worker and one turn into a settler. Then grow again on the chariot, as the whip anger expires, and triple-whip the settler on T76. The settler is born on T77, just in time to settle on top of stone on T79. Meanwhile, the capital overflows into the worker, completing that on T79, just in time to contribute a chop to the pyramids.

WIFOM:

Finally, our most recent city, settled with gold in the first ring since we desperately needed the happiness, and the place where we will build the pyramids. A pair of workers just finished the gold mine, which is being worked for much-needed commerce. They will complete the road on the gold next turn, and then hurry to get the corn farmed on the turn after the borders expand. Once the corn is farmed, WIFOM will work that until it grows to size 2, then work the corn and gold until T78. On T78, it whips the granary (which is almost complete), and works the corn. On T79, it has a granary and a perfect 11/22 food in the box, and works the corn. It also builds the pyramids, using the granary overflow and 8 mathematically stone-boosted chops.

Foreign Affairs

TEAM

No diplomatic contact between us and TEAM except for the mechanics of the city gifting on T64. They appear to've turn their attention to growth, like us. If they were going for the GLH then they lost the race.
  • Cities:
    • Pitboss3 (capital) @ size 4
    • 1 @ size 5
    • 1 @ size 1
    • Pigeons @ size 2, gifted by us T64
    • 1 @ size 1, founded T70
  • Army: 3 Warriors, 2 Archers.
  • Techs: Fishing?, Hunting, Mining, Myst?, Agri, Archery, Wheel, Masonry?, Pottery?, AH, Sailing?, BW, Writing?

Menagerie

We made contact with Menagerie again after the end of both our war & theirs, when they had a scout wandering about to the south of our capital. Either the lack of pre-occupation or the change in personnel has effected a change in their attitude towards us - now very friendly. We've signed Open Borders, in return for which they gave us a screenshot of the land between us and Gillette (very useful for negotiating with Gillette). We have a NAP until T110 and are not to spend more EP on them now we have their graphs (and vice versa). They have a NAP with Gillette till T100, organised to be approx the same time as our (hopeful) NAP with Gillette will run out. Primary goal here is to stay friendly and hopefully not end up as the 2 in a 3v2 later on lol They built the GLH on T70. • Cities:

    • 1 @ size 1, settled T69
  • Army: 3 Warriors, 4 Axes.
  • Infra: Barracks
  • Wonders: Stonehenge, Great Lighthouse
  • Techs: Fishing, Hunting, Mining, Myst, Agri?, Priesthood?, Wheel, Masonry, Pottery, AH, Sailing, BW

Gillette

Our NAP with Gillette ran out on T70 so we started negotiations with them. These have been very slow going and nothing has yet been decided as of T70. We are trying to push them to get a better deal in the south than they want to give us. In part because we want the deal, in part because it's nice to see them diverting resources into army rather than infrastructure and workers. Hopefully this will not backfire and have an impact on our Pyramids plan. They built the Oracle T69 and got Metal Casting as their free tech. Messages and chats here, here, here, here, here and here.

  • Wonders: Oracle

Pirates

Judging by the graphs, Pirates are starting to lag behind. We've had no contact with them recently, but we do know from Menagerie that their war ended with a white peace after Menagerie took a city by force. I completely re-worked which techs I think they have due to no longer thinking they have Archery. And re-thought the composition of their army too.
