Poll: A variant idea - you conquer a civ and the players formerly running that civ become your vassals, forced to do your micro and reporting for you? yup nope or hammer

Voted nope. It's a cute idea, but impractical. People tend to lose their enthusiasm for the game after being crushed under an invader's boot heel. Most people here are adults and act like it most of the time, but there would always be the danger of less than optimal management of the vassalized empire (or even active sabotage). And I would expect reporting to be minimal or non-existent.

Theme suggestion: crew members from Star Trek would fit with your username.

You're totally right, and I was joking. No way I'd allow someone I conquered to micro my empire and macro my armies after I'd just crushed that player under my boot heel. I first came up with this idea during PB18 when I was burned out on microing my swollen empire and I had relieved several players of command of their civs. I will accept a turn reporting surrogate though. And, of course, dead players converting to ded-lurkers. I'm assuming that this won't be my fate so I make no guarantees not to immediately drop this going-nowhere idea if it applies to me before this game is over.

I really need this game to get going. I hate settings discussions and now I've injected myself right into the middle of it.

Hey, that plan would have REM winning PB27 at a trot right now...
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Would it? Looks like his micro worked out ok. neenerneener

In all seriousness, any comment I make could be construed as a spoiler. But the way to win the big field games is to win big in the "meanwhile, across the map..." lottery. Solid play at home can position you well enough to win, but not necessarily well enough to help you overcome craziness out in the fog. Or the random mackoti deciding to join benev(i)olently take over your civ.

And no, this is not a dig at TBS winning PB18. In before anyone trots that out. Neighbors just matter a lot and whichever non-contender decides to throw their armies at which contender has a lot to do with the final score. At least Krill hasn't joined this game. #pb18

Hmm. Guess I'm still not over that, huh? lol

Is that an offer to micro Commodoria for me? twirl Micro is not my fun point past about 5 cities. Or planning. I like to play the turns as they come. Plus hammer even on the loosing end is much more fun!

PB32 - MONSTER HUNTERS

In PB32, here be monsters. You've just graduated from Monster Hunter school, with wide-eyed dreams of becoming like your hero, that guy who says "Clever girl." in Jurassic Park, and you've just gotten your first assignment from Monster Hunters Incorporated: make camp at on this crazy torus world and capture as many monsters as you can! (and also build a Civilization to stand the test of time, and all that jazz).

You can capture a monster by expanding your culture over it, simple as that. On turns 5, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 200, and 300, you're asked to post an overview shot of your civ so that we can count how many monsters you control. This info will be posted on the TopMonsterHunter.com, for all your competitors to see. And look, here's your first monster now:

Your combo is: Boldly Going Nowhere - Darius (Fin/Org) of China

You have up to 2 rerolls, and you may lock half a combo.

This is going to be a slow start but I'll make it work. I think I can get a decent second city without first researching The Wheel, using the river for a trade route. This is probably the most river I've had at a capital but with FIN it won't help here. No early game traits to aid expansion means I'll be laying waste to every tree in sight to juice my expansion. This is a good hammer capital so that will help too. I'm deciding whether it will be better to grow to size 3-4 and whip into a settler or if starting settler at size 2 will be faster. I did a ten minute run late last night and had built 2 settlers and 2 workers by T41 with 3 warriors. I should be able to shave a turn off the second settler by watching my micro. I expect this will be improved once I know where my bronze is. Same for horses. Initial tech path was Hunting, BW, AH, fishing (which I would probably change in a subsequent attempt as I need Sailing as well for the whales resource), and finally The Wheel. Needing Hunting, AH, as well as Agriculture for the start constrains tech here, but having Agriculture and Mining certainly helps the start.

Joey, I like setting up my own sandbox so I can add in opponents' cities for accurate trade routes. Unless this info is secret. Also, are there any wonder/civ bans to consider before we all lock in civ/leader picks?
Reply

So that's a lock? I'll give you the map dimensions so you can make your own sim as accurate as the one I give you, once you lock. smile

No bans AFAIK, other than map trading. City trading / unit trading was still up in the air AFAIK.
Reply

Yeah, that's a lock. Darius and China. What's not to like?

I thought your sandbox is just one AI and the player civ? Rather than fudging trade routes by placing cottages (etc.) under city tiles I just wall off civs behind mountains and run a river through for a route. Then I can easily add a city when each civ needs one and don't have to keep up with the cottage growing under a city. Easy enough to set up and can make the sandbox a perfect copy of the real game state. This is particularly helpful in sorting out trade implications such as how long routes are nuked by war and how many routes maybe available.
