Why do I not find any files in Assets
Posted by: vmxa - November 5th, 2005, 20:57 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (6)

XML folder also is empty, well the Assest folder has one other folder.

I thought it was due to some filetype being hidden, but most folders say 0 bytes.

So where are the data that has things such as values used for levels and such. Can you edit them (to read only) with a hex editor or notepad or do you need a an XML editor?

Thanks.

  We're Waiting on the Patch
Posted by: Sirian - November 5th, 2005, 13:32 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (12)

To start the tournaments, that is.

As proud as we are of Rule #10, we'd rather not implement it just yet. tongue

According to threads on the big boards, the patch is due this week.

  Another Problem:
Posted by: Kodi - November 4th, 2005, 18:57 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (2)

It seems that when starting up a new game, I must wait until everything is fully loaded onto the screen before pressing "Play Game", or else my screen would deactivate and turn black, as if in sleeping mode. I thought that this would be fine, all I had to do is wait an extra bit when starting a new game, until it happened again, this time when I was loading a game (Note: I had loaded games before with success, about 5 times). I don't want to have to continue rebooting continuously to play, so I was wondering if anyone knows what might be the problem here. I'm assuming theres something wrong with my moniter, but i cannot be sure. Thanks :/

EDIT: One extra question: How do you change city production so as not to lose hammers? I know how to place a building before and after, but not replacing.

I hope you'll all stop by on your way to the Civ 4 SG forums.

I got thoroughly pounded attacking a Capital
Posted by: Drasca - November 3rd, 2005, 13:46 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (7)

and I am very glad I did. The computer can defend itself after all, even on Noble difficulty.

Late-game, my ally and second most powerful nation the Malinese, had a heads up on me building his space ship. Oops. Don't want that to happen. Sure, I work on building a spaceship too, as space elevator (+50% speed to space ship building) hasn't been built yet and I have a great engineer saved up...

But this game I decided I wanted to take a more military route. Upgrade galleys to transports? Check. Destroyer escorts? Check. Panzers and infintry loaded outside his territory? Check. Knowledge where his capital is? Check!

Time for a backstabbing! thumbsup

His Capital, as computer likes to choose non-coastal cities, was on the 3rd tile inland, and surrounded by all railroads. No problem.... I think. smoke time.

Declare war, unload military units. Watched faster units reach the city's border, slower ones just behind them. I'm set to attack in two turns, right? Hit end turn.

Ooomph. Artillery from everywhere shows up, do collateral damage, stacks of my infantry and artillery begin to fall left and right. My supposed capital quick strike ended in dismal failure... Woohoo! lol The computer can fight back. Stacks of Supposed doom don't quite work.

What should I have done? My spies were successful in keeping important resources disconnected, that allowed me to wear the Malinese down later on... but air support has just become far more important. Coastal cities seem very easy to take down due to destroyers and battleships doubling from escort duty to siege weapons. You also now have a trade-off between coastal harvesting vs vulnerability from sea-attack, which is a good thing. So... what should I have done? Loaded some marines, stolen a coastal city, relocate dozens of air planes and start pounding city defenses to dust via combined arms air strikes and fast strike tanks.

I'll do that next time. Still, I like the fact the computer can fend off an ill-thought out invasion. Plenty of units, but all taken down via collateral artillery then mopped up by infantry.

I like this. Don't you?

Additionally, the computer's submarines raided all my offshore oil platforms and fishing nets. Lucky I had land-based oil and uranium lol, but this means you must patrol your own coasts! Watch out! Them civvies are after your shrimping boat!

  Fishing: Reveals the World Map?
Posted by: Kodi - November 2nd, 2005, 23:02 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (3)

Now that I have a computer that works Civ4 100% well, I noticed that something seemed a bit odd. When I researched Fishing, it revealed the entire map, then also granted me the special of +1 movement for all ships for circumnavigating the world. I double-checked in the Civilopedia, and sure enough, it said "Reveals the World Map". I don't know if this is a glitch in the game, or a glitch in my computer, but it seems very cheap kills the challenge of exploring the world. If someone could help me out, that'd be great~

EDIT- Sorry, fixed the problem. I had editted an XML in attempt to fix my Civ4 without upgrading my computer (Maniac Marshall's instructions), and hadn't reversed it back, so it gave the techs the ability to reveal the world map. Make sure this this isn't exploited in Epics O_O~

  Other GW variant ideas
Posted by: Zed-F - November 1st, 2005, 12:17 - Forum: Variants - Replies (7)

I was thinking of running another GW variant once 7 Samurai is done (though that could be awhile yet!) Or maybe my attention will have turned to Civ4 by then. I had originally been planning to run a naked team, but that train has already left the station. Even though I'm not thinking of starting a team variant immediately, though, I thought it might be useful to someone to share ideas. Here's one to start the ball rolling:

The Half-wits
-------------
They say that in order to survive the field of battle, you must always keep your full wits about you. But what happens when you've only got a half set to begin with? A group of raw recruits, the dregs of the barrel -- whether somnambulent, brain-damaged, air-headed, intoxicated, or perennially distracted -- ventures forth from the RB guild hall to find out.

Variant rules:
1 - You may never equip skills in more than half your skillbar (exceptions: res skill, pet res skill, capture signet.)
2 - You may never spend more than half your total attribute points.
3 - You may never have a rank in any attribute greater than half your character level. This includes bonuses from equipment.

Game report: A Different World (aka Pungent Weed v4)
Posted by: Kylearan - October 31st, 2005, 16:46 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (4)

Hi,

I've completed my very first game now, a standard continents game on Noble, and wrote a report about it called "A Different World" on my website. I thought it might be interesting to read about all the smoke an old Civ 3 player makes when trying to learn the new game, and I'm sure I've made more weedy moves during that game than I'm currently aware of... lol

Feel free to post comments, questions or criticism about the game report either here, or via PM or email! smile

  Combat information
Posted by: Griselda - October 30th, 2005, 14:01 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (2)

I put up a news bit on the front civ page that links to an interesting thread with accurate CIV combat information. I know that most of you probably aren't in the habit of checking the site if you watch the forums, so I figured I'd better mention it here.

I won't promise to do the same in the future, so keep at least one eye on the site from time to time, OK? smile

Gris asked me a couple of days ago if I have carved any new veggies lately. Sad to say, I have been working too hard all summer and didn't have much time for fun stuff.

Thanks for the little nudge. I found the urge, and 2 minutes, to create a master piece, a show piece, a piece that will get the whole town talking.[Image: eek.gif] Keep in mind this is a pretty small town and most people would have seen my latest greatest work by the end of this week.

Alas, as I expected, people of this backwoods little hic town just don't get it. Most of them cannot figure out what this master piece is, some suggested it maybe some kind of ancient hieroglyphic, and a couple of them even saw images of pronographic nature [Image: rolleye.gif]

And to think I was going to do :-[
