And gee I wonder why Uberfish wants Uberfish to have the slow heavy explosive launching weapon.
I figure we can just clone Sunrise and Sullla since parts of their names have numbers or resemble Roman numerals. :D
4 casualties is actually pretty decent these early missions. I've had near party wipes early on. Usually your first UFOs are ones that are shot down and have a 1/2 dead crew.

A lot depends on the map type. I usually bring my snipers along, 10-12 tiles behind my scouts. Until you get flying armor and can shoot from altitude, there are usually too many obstacles to hang back by the transport.
Ug the Barbarian Wrote:Works better once we can get heavy plasmas - you can shoot your way through the buildings etc if required then.
Laser rifles are enough to blast through light obstacles -- fences, wooden building walls, etc. This is definitely worth doing, as the aliens are smart enough to lie in ambush around doorways and other entrances.
Ug the Barbarian Wrote:Autocannon is our best AP weapon currently but try not to use it on targets near our troops unless you like friendly fire. Best to keep it back in a sniper type role as well. Uberfish is quite right on the high strength & at least medium accuracy requirements - one is enough for a squad.
At least medium accuracy, yes. And don't shoot near friendlies.
uberfish Wrote:Autocannon (HE ammo) is the most fun early weapon imo since you don't actually need to be that accurate with it to be effective, so long as your teammates are out of the line of fire. Near misses often get kills, or at least demolish the aliens' cover.
Yep. The property damage bills racked up by XCOM missions must be extraordinary. I assume that in the XCOM universe, insurance companies have long since added "and XCOM missions!" to their "acts of god" clauses.

I dunno, I usually don't use autocannons due to psi attacks. In TFTD, the gas cannon atleast can't friendly fire your heavy armor so you can use it as a melee weapons.
I always have an all lazer with grenades and some heavy plasma/stun/blaster guys with a plasma pistol each.

On Superhuman, how early do the Psi Attacks show up? I think I never played a patched version, so my difficulty level was always bugged, and it's been a really long time since I played.
And please put me on the cannon fodder list. Cannon to right of them, cannon to left of them...

I usually have stopped using autocannons by the time psi attacks become a major threat. Keeping people properly spread out helps a lot, in case someone does get controlled.

I am a big fan of grenadiers: high strength, high throwing accuracy types. Give them a light pistol (laser or whatever you have) and a bunch of grenades, and they can drop explosives on aliens over half the map. It can be a good way to get value out of recruits with poor firing accuracy, and having a couple along on each mission helps provide back up to multiple scouts at once.
Stun tends to be highly specialized. I tend not to use it unless I have a specific objective in mind, such as a base assault or a battleship mission.
Blaster bombs...once you have them, they are tremendous fun. But extreme care must be taken not to nuke half your squad.

As a lurker, I would just like to second the request for a list of troopers and their statuses, including KIA ones if possible. I knew nothing about XCOM before this, but it's really interesting to read about.

This game is going really fast.
Just do you guys know, I can't play yet. That will have to wait until Saturday so someone is welcome to play it. I guess I'll take the mission that lands on Saturday and you can skip me until then.

ASM,
I am listed to go after you, but I should be able to play Friday evening (North America east coast time). So maybe we can just swap places?

Lurking as well - and have bought it on Steam just because I loved to play it. Even that it seems like a lifetime since I did that the last time.

You can add me to the list of X-Com lovers. Itâs probably the most atmospheric and immersive experience in gaming.
Iâm enjoying seeing you guys validating some tactics that I cobbled together back in the day (although I never really worked out grenades).
I had gotten a horrific alien-base graphic bug playing the original release, so I recall first completing the game by launching a blaster bomb through the corridors at an effectively invisible target.:neenernee
My dosbox version now refuses to play along with DirectX10, but Iâve never tried xcomutil.
