Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Turn 048

Here is the 3rd city I've been so coy about. See if you can tell which person this is anagrammed from. Rego asked me about it in chat today and I wouldn't give him any hints:

R U OK finished the workboat at turn's end and next turn it will be working the lake fish exclusively. The capital will take the plains hill and slow build the granary.

In the south we have a warrior looking to make friends:

It's not so easy to tell who is picking up which techs when I don't have contact on half the teams. Ruff 2-turned something, I'm guessing Hunting because there was a 2k soldier point unaccounted for. Rego got Sailing and whipped 2 pop. Ichabod also whipped 2 pop. So for now we're the top population.

And demos look really good:

We're teching Sailing and not Writing?

Edit: Yeah Sailing first is fine. We don't come close to building a library in this setup. We'll probably get a discount on Writing by the time we tech it.

I guess this setup has us landing the settler before we scout the west coast of the island, so the warrior will have to take a look right before we settle the city. If we see seafood in the west we can move the settler I guess.

Oh, can you do one of me? 'Sketch It' sounds good.
More people have been to Berlin than I have.

Isnt the work boat heading west instead if north?
The warrior may be able to scout the west end in time to make decision but i'm not sure. It's a one or two turn difference between loading the warrior and loading the settler
