Josh's Civ 4 memoir. Chapter 2

I can see the spots for 2nd and 3rd city, I assume they are the next two you're going for? What's the allure of those spots, and why that order?

Also, is something wrong with your resolution? The aspect ratio of the screenshot is way off.

Well the first city is a very food strong city to be able to whip faster, and it can share the deer so will get to work immediately without the need of the worker who can continue chopping.
The second is also a strong food city, to hook up the copper to protect against oncoming barbs, there's quite a bit of open space, corners and tundra so I imagine they'll be a lot. It requires workers to be useful so hence its second city and not first. And third city will be somewhere around the gold to help with the maintenance costs for more cities.
Ah if didnt think youd notice! I load the game in windowed mode so I can do other things on the side, and then full screen before I take the screenshot

Thanks for the update! Here's to many more. toast

I like that second city; we can 2-whip a granary (or a worker->granary would be even better) very early, and use it as a very efficient worker pump for the first 100 turns. smile

For the third city, looking at the picture one thing that comes to mind is 1NW? We would still have the wet wheat first ring, and could start monument. It would also allow a plant on the plains hill to the south. That would delay copper until T50 though, which is risky.

I haven't logged in, but at the capital I'd recommend finishing two more work boats immediately (timed for size 5 if possible), next up. One for 2nd city, one for the crabs. I'm very curious to see how lurkers would have played this start; one of the advantages of reporting is that you can see what others would do differently.

I would also consider mining the river-plains tile before the next chop, with the worker. It's possible (likely even?) that just endless chopping is better though, especially if we 2-whip the next settler into a granary.

The potential 3rd city location JoshyBravo marked is much better than 1NW. It has all relevant resources in the first ring.

Yeah civac is definitely right. Not sure what I was thinking with that one. smoke

I also play in windowed mode, but I don't swap back to fullscreen for screenshots. I think that might be why the aspect ratio of the screenshot is skewed. This made it so I actually didn't see that the second ring would claim a new game, and thought that the clams was the only resource.

I logged in and took a look around. A few things of note:

1. We want to convert to Slavery next turn. Doing it while the settler is en-route saves the 2nd city a turn of anarchy, which is a bigger deal than you'd think.

2. These gems:

are likely contested. It would really surprise me if everyone had an un-jungled gems tile available, and we've explored about 'our' number of land tiles.

3. I would recommend mining the current tile with the worker, before beginning our chop-fest. The timing works out much better as we can work it at size 5, and we don't want to accidentally waste our chop on the warrior or something.

4. This warrior wants to fogbust for the 2nd city until T32, but after that he can move down and watch out for our 3rd city (or somewhere else). That way we only need one more in the near future, for the garrison at Rome.

5. We should consider roading a trade route between Rome and 2nd-city, with either the first or second worker. +2 commerce isn't a massive deal, but it isn't a tiny one either.

6. We probably should have researched Mysticism before going for Pottery. The second city wants a monument pretty badly. But it's ok, not a big deal. We can whip granary->monument in a not-unreasonable amount of time, and this way the capital gets its granary extra quickly and we get an extra fogbuster. smile

So, Joshy will be on holiday tomorrow and I will be taking the turns for a few weeks. I will be asking Joshy for input where possible, and I am very unlikely to make aggressive moves without consultation for reasons of fairness, but don't tell the other players that. shhh  I will try to report to some extent here, although I make no promises as to the detail. I don't want Joshy to feel lost when he gets back, especially. We've been speaking more about the game in the last week or so, which has been fun, but mostly on discord obviously. Before then, I didn't have a huge amount of input, just somewhat ill-informed micro advice. Anyway, just to let you guys know there may be some posts in the coming weeks. smile

@Tarkeel Your wish is my demand!

Day 52.

Haven't said much as I've been quite busy trying to get everything sorted before my trip so I'll use the nothing interesting happened excuse.

My civilization has been growing steadily.

Both Rome and ClamCity has had their granaries chopped, amicalola has thought me the 5pop-3 pop whip settler + 1chop for the 1 turn granary technique. The city has become a settler whipper and ClamCity worker whipper. Settled CopperCity for good food and getting copper to protect against barbs, also easy to connect to Rome. And settled cow city to have some food but mostly grow cottages for Rome, we want to start expanding south and grab the gems and other tiles that might be contested. Since our axes are online we'll be able to travel through forrests without fear.

I have been doing more fogbusting and less exloring so had to wait for visitors. Both vanrober and JesseL have come from the south so I'm begining to think maybe we are all connected in the middle somehow? ClamCity is working on a wb to explore.
Compared to the rivals that I've met we're doing good so far ahead in cities and in the top half of food and GDP rankings so all looks well.

From now on Amicalola will take my turns for a couple weeks, I tried to leave some notes, will also try to keep in touch and make time to talk about the decisions and future steps and plans. Even a world leader has to take some days off eh.

Known PB61 Mistakes list:
1. Forgetting to change worked tiles which have been improved the same turn.

Josh out.
