[Lurker Thread] Secret Island of the Māori

15 turns of actually building units, sure. 15 turns of whatever Japper was planning to do before Archduke's army showed up? I doubt it. Adding on that Archduke could be going a lot harder than he is into military investments right now, he just seems to have concluded that pouring more hammers into jags to kill a civ which peaked at 80 milpower wasn't worth the economic costs. Which was a gamble, but is going to work out for him.

Moscow falls. Jasper did take out a bunch of units, so the attack would have likely be unsuccessful at quick speed and very likely at BBGM's intended online speed.

Well I'm officially eliminated so I can respond to some of the Lurker commentary, not to say I don't agree with your assesment: Despite Arch rolling the OP civ, I should've pivoted into full war mode sooner, though I doubt I could've stopped him, he was one-tapping Warriors and Archers with his Eagles, you just can't build your way outta that. Maybe if I walled up? I was a few turns from Masonry before Moscow fell, perhaps if I pivoted earlier? In my experience though, walls are a delaying tactic, not a hold in and of themselves.

I'll be lurking with interest to see if he can out compete the well-established Kongo, after all he only took my terrain that was already absolute garbage WITH a civ designed to take advantage of it.

Gran Columbia already has 4 cities out if I'm reading Yuri's thread correctly? Seems Archduke will have two very well established civs to contend with (GC and Kongo). Also I have my doubts he can take out Arabia as well (though from what I saw in game, and reading... or rather not having anything to read... Greenline's thread he's checked out)

Yeah, I still hold with what I said within your thread - Russia's fate in particular was decided when you spawned in tundra right next to Archduke's Aztecs. The quality difference is just huge at that tier when there hasn't been time to build up any counterbalancing advantages. Like, could you plausibly have grown your cities any faster than you did? Did you waste time on any irrelevant techs? Build settlers or wonders when it should have been military units?

Even IF you'd gone full military and NOT gotten steamrolled by archers, that's just losing more slowly, and perhaps to someone other than the Aztecs in the end.

I literally wasn't able to work more than a +1f tile within capital radius, by the time Archduke hit I had finally rectified that situation by picking up Goddess of the Hunt and improving my camps.

The poor start actually forced me to build military units, since I couldn't build settlers without at least 2 pop, and I went down to 1 again once I finished my first one. I suppose I could've skipped out on Settlers entirely and just go Warrior-Warrior-Warrior. But what would that have accomplished? I'd be dead in the water anyway because I'd be stuck at one city till turn 50 or so. That is not a winning play either.

Maybe the Lavra should've just been Archers? But I feel that is the only advantage Russia has early (and the extra tiles claimed, which incentivices Settlers).

I just have a hard time seeing a line that doesn't leave me either the guy getting rushed or the guy with an army and no economy

Yuris maybe shoulda offered that DoF BEFORE settling 3 cities in a row in a direct line towards pin's capital.

Wish I knew what was happening on the western side of the central mountain range.

Yeah especially without communication between players that just comes off as an "I'm gonna drop another city while we're peacelocked" jerk move.

But I suppose they'll both be more focused on the Aztec elephant in the room soon...

It's pretty shocking that Yuris doesn't view their settling as extremely provocative to Pindicator, but between throwing down those three cities in very quick succession and some pretty decent defensive terrain, I think Gran Colombia should still be favored to hold it? Pindicator is paying the slow expansion price for their other infrastructure investments, which aren't likely to turn into much of a short term military benefit.

Am I wrong or is Yuris getting away scott free with the ambitious settling towards Pindicator? It looks like to me that Pindicator will act as a buffer zone against Archduke, while Yuris will reap the benefits of undisturbed expansion. This can work out quite well, so there will be competition against the conquering Aztecs? I haven't played that much of civ 6 to really tell who has the best position now, plus I'm very unfamiliar with the balance mod.
