Best way would be to test it now before the game starts. Log in and then post here saying you're logged in, then see if someone else can connect while you're in. We don't have Civstats set up for the test game so if you don't post here nobody will know you're in to test simultaneous connection.

So, are the executable and the steam beta redundant and causing problems? Or did I get bumped and the time it took me to download the original files gave somebody time to log off?

Try using just one method or the other, not using the modified .exe and the Steam "beta" version. Since I use the Steam version of Civ I use the beta release and don't have to use the modified .exe. Doing that plus having the correct hosts file entry should be sufficient.

I'm around now.

I have an issue when logging in. On the first log-in attempt I get stuck on this screen until I time out. It doesn't complete the map loading (but I can open advisors for instance)

I then get booted back to menu from timing out but can then connect normally on the 2nd attempt. I reproduced this issue a couple of times by restarting my game. What gives? Known issue with a fix?

Edit: As I suspected it looks like it's related to running BUG in customassets. I removed it and now I can log in without trouble. Guess I need to install BUG as a mod instead.
