Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[SPOILERS] WillPlunder as Mehmed of Arabia: Noobs meet world

Ok, hopefully we're back in business here! And we can get more than one turn per week. For the state of the empire, we'll settle a city next turn:

This is the four-way nexus. A more audacious plant would be the plains hill 2S, and it's ultimately a better location, but that's also getting awfully far away from the capital. We could get away with it for sure though, at least in the short term, since we have military there and nobody else in the area have metal yet.

I could have done the city and worker micro better for sure. I'm going to work 0% science for two more turns because that's when we can finish a couple of madrassas. I think the big 25% increase to science is worth more than getting Iron a turn or two earlier. The workers will have enough to do. But it would have been nice to arrange micro to get the madrassas a turn or two earlier. On the plus side, we're going to be able to run 100% science for a while.

I regret not being as thorough with sandboxing for the last 10-20 turns as in the beginning of the game. In the next game I play I'll put more thought into this phase. There are a few small edges that could have been gained, looking at the big picture, rather than going unit by unit and city by city like I've been doing. Eventually that becomes unrealistic but that time isn't now.

Another small mistake is that I had the scout dallying in the north and fogbusting. This is very useful, but really it should be a warrior or even an axe doing that. I'm going to remedy this now, and get the scout over in rival lands to run around their road networks, since scouts are ideal for that.

In foreign news, TyrantsBoldlyBricking have hooked up stone, so as IND they may be a lock for Pyramids and maybe some other wonders as well like Hanging Gardens. Hopefully we'll eventually be able to trade someone for Stone to get Moai at least... With our metric shit-tonne of excess calendar happiness resources this ought to be possible once we start clearing some jungle.

This was another turn of stockpiling gold until Madrassas are online. The two will complete at the end of next turn.

We settled Alfredo:

It's yet another city that isn't good right now, but is a long term investment, to secure a foothold in the south. I'd like to know what's behind that fog to the east of it.

I have to say it's pretty tempting to skewer that chariot too, but that's no way to make friends.

Lurker question: If a library completes at the end of a turn, does its beaker bonus apply that turn, or not until the turn after? (I could test this but it's easier to ask.)

Edit: Nevermind. I just tested it empirically and the answer is "nope".

Things are still chugging along. A madrassa will finish in the capital at the end of the turn, and another one will be double-whipped out of Spaghetti at the same time, so we can crank science to 100% for a while.

Here's Spaghetti before the whip - it is quite a nice city now!

The other grass hill mine will finish next turn, not that it matters for a while.

Over in the south, Molach settled another city there recently:

What's in the fog will tell us whether there's any point in prioritizing another city down there any time soon. So far resources look scarce beyond what we've already scooped.

Someone birthed a Great Scientist this turn too! yikes It's probably Oxy or Suttree, the only PHI leaders, because I think it's doubtful that anyone else could have had a library up for 25 turns working two scientists.

Our most natural GP farm and Nat Epic site is probably the peninsula site west of the capital, but it will be about ten turns before we start getting that set up... I've already overwhipped a little perhaps, so cities are recovering happiness.

We got the madrassas, and iron is due in 5 at 100% science.

Here are the demos:

Someone is building a lot of military again, though I believe it's nobody close to us.

I don't have much to say about turn 82. Things are chugging along, getting closer to when we can start chopping jungle and making some of these terrible cities into something decent.

The Pyramids fell this turn to TyrantsBoldlyBricking, surprising nobody. It would be a nice wonder obviously, but we were way out of that race on turn 0.

Demos are looking up. We're above average in the things that matter now.

Someone likes living dangerously with 36k soldiers I guess! [Edit: Wrong. Yes, lining up row headings with numbers is a skill I lack!]

That's land area, not soldiers.

It's 36k soldiers, plus another 18k!
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Another waiting turn. I have a couple of settlers and a worker being slow-built while whip anger recovers, and I'm having Alfredo build our first galley. Iron comes in in three turns, I'm going pre-road the gems tile to start chopping the jungle on that turn.

The land in the border area is looking pretty barren.

I think I'm perfectly happy with Alfredo being our border there along with the natural waterway.

My scouting management there has been terrible. I started with a spear scout before realizing that it might be pretty stupid since it will just die to a barb axe, and a spear is far more valuable at home since Molach and Bandit's armies are chariot heavy. So I'm moving an axe out to start a scouting expedition instead. Also the scouting warrior down there is coming back home to be a military police. Meanwhile our original scout is about to enter Molach's land to check it out.

Logs this turn:

So not everyone in the world is playing the peaceful builder game we are right now!

We also met Azza's scout off to the east, who is still at war with KurumiBandit.

Starting to scout Molach's land:

It looks like he has iron, huh? yikes I haven't been very observant on Civstats, but the only characteristic 12 point score increase I see in his log is from five turns ago, unless it was long enough ago not to show anymore. I don't think it would be unusual for aggressive Rome to beeline iron from the start.

Hopefully he has enough neighbours, and our land is too far away, for us to be his most opportunistic target anytime soon. I'm focusing on him as the next EP target, while maintaining graphs on the other three we have.

The GNP graph is maybe a bit artificial:

We've got the culture from a holy city, religion, plus two madrassas contributing to this, but it's still nice.
