Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[SPOILERS] scooter is fashionably late to PB54

A real update! Seemed necessary as there's been some action.

To circle back to this picture, Naufragar moved the eastern warrior away and the western warrior onto the flatland directly north of my warrior. I was vaguely tempted to take the 50/50 shot given that I can see his empty capital, but it smelled sort of like a trap to me given that he's surely about to complete a warrior or else why would he move like that. I still might have taken the shot, but something bad happened.

I lost my warrior escort at 80% odds. He was sitting on the forest hill I intend to settle on. Insert my anti-barbarian manifesto from early on in PB53 here. That forced me to delay the settling of this city by several turns, which really sucked. With that in mind, I offered peace, and he agreed. I figured my warrior probably delayed his settler by a couple turns, so mission accomplished. I might have moved into an outright choke had I not lost this warrior (note the other warriors incoming too), but it's not meant to be.

This is an old picture, but I'm posting it because it appears a barbarian city has settled on the tile the warrior inhabits right now. I just completed Wheel and I'm hooking my Horse, so I'll probably capture it fairly soon. That's a nice break. I do need to wait long enough to let it grow to size 2, and looking at those first ring tiles, it might be awhile. It's possible I'm wrong about where it settled. Ugh, I may have to raze it.

I saw Naufragar move up with a pair of warriors this current turn, so I took a slight risk and pushed my settler up here a turn early despite there being two possible 2-move barb animal tiles in range of it. I figured it was unlikely because there's been a million units around here, including Vanrober's scout somewhere in this vicinity. Looks like I'm safe and good to settle next turn. I think I'll be the first of my neighbors to 3 cities, but I'm a little unclear about that given that I can't see cities on the trading screen, but I do see city counts on the scoreboard? But I don't know if those are real city counts or lying counts similar to how it worked in Always War where it updates when you've seen evidence of another city. It seems unlikely Vanrober is still on 1 city, so that's why I'm unsure.

As long as a settler is covered by a warrior it should be safe, because I implemented free wins in that case.

About the city counter. It was requested for this PB that the city counter is tied to espionage. As soon as you acquire graphs from a player, you also acquire their city count.

I left it uncovered for 1 turn to settle the city sooner, so that was my apprehension. The warrior I lost was on that tile because the bear kept hovering around, and I was afraid he'd end up on the city tile itself and cost me several turns. Guess it happened this way regardless. I definitely should have utilized the free win mechanic though and just moved the warrior with the settler, but oh well.

Ah. That makes sense.

How many free wins are there?  And does the free win thing apply to cities (which I think it should, since they are the same as settlers)?

There are infinite free wins, but of course you only get them when you are defending with a settler present.

No it does not apply to cities. Mainly because I didn't know how best to implement that and because if cities are safe too, what is the purpose of barbs other then just harassing your tiles.

The main reason why I only implemented it for settlers (note not workers) is because they have a higher risk of being attacked compared to a city. A city for one has a culture radius that gives you some warning ahead of time and if you brought a warrior with your settler it gets at least 25% for city defense. In that regard cities are not exactly the same as settlers.

Okay, but you also said that it deducts from your normal free wins vs barbs. How many of those normal ones do you get?

Depends on the difficulty. On Monarch you get zero.

I guess I need to update.

Burned this city down here at the cost of 3 chariots. Not bad actually, I was worried this might be worse. The short version here is Naufragar got Archers too soon for me to complete the conquest which was always a longshot. Instead this is just a duel, a duel in which he now has two size 1 mainland cities and I'm settling "his" land right now. Come back with Swords or HAs or something later and finish the job. I've kept harassing even though it was clear I wasn't going to be able to conquer because it's obvious he was never going to be friendly with me after this start, so let's drop the pretext. I think we were probably always going to be enemies once I settled League of Legends, so maybe it's best I got the upper hand anyway. I've also managed to kill 2 workers during this, so in the pure 1v1 I feel I've come out decidedly ahead.

Economy is absolutely in the toilet, and my food/mfg are decidedly average right now, so who knows whether I can make this work longterm or not. That said, I've got 10 pop, a settler, and a granary completing this turn while Naufragar has 3 population across 3 cities, so I've definitely sufficiently hobbled him. Stonehenge culture is obnoxious though, and he's probably going to get another border pop before long.
