[TECH] Pitboss 38 IT and Tech Issues Thread

I played PB37 on a Linux rig using the Windows version of Civ4 BtS and wine 2.x, almost without problems that couldn't be explained by potato-grade hardware; if you have a Win version of BtS lying around, running that under wine might work for you.

edit: Wine is not a VM, nor is it an emulator (the joke goes that wine stands for "wine is not an emulator"). I'm sure I'm making friends today.

Did you connect to the test server?

I think your only option is to run a windows virtual machine emulator (is it WINE?) and run civ through that.

Edit: while you set that up you can give a lurker instructions to play for you.

I'd swap out "can" with a much stronger word in that sentence.

Needlessly holding up the game for 24 other people as there's nothing happening at this stage that can't be relayed through simple instructions.

If you cant start SP game with 18+ players it means your mod is not properly installed.

I unpaused the game to change my research. Am I supposed to re-pause it before exiting, or what's the protocol here?

For this first turn please do pause before exciting simply because we want to make sure everyone knows the game has started. After this turn, it's not needed unless you notice the timer is low and we're waiting on someone (and I think that's debatable for a large game )

(In case people are wondering -- no, this is not a joke; there was an actual commercial game with "Civ" in the name where you could build lawyer units and have them go around filing lawsuits on other civilizations.)

I might say a game with great ideeas and best ever MP games i ever seen(when i was student '2000-2006' we were playing like  weeks  on tc /ip conections, and belive me i seen many civ4 MP games but still cant compare  with was there).DId you played  Dark Savant? One of the reasons i play less civ4 i found one someone which plays CTP, he is good but if  i would realy would like to find someone of level wich was seven spirits in civ4(he made me to ditch alot about what i was thinking about civ 4 and improve alot, if you wanna lesson of civ4 pbem 23 is your dady)

I never played CTP all that extensively; the interface always bothered me, even compared to the original Civ.

I do really miss the "public works" mechanism of building tile improvements.

Please read again my post and especially issue thread on github for some other mod in Civ 4 that replaces original CVGameCoreDLL.dll:

Quote:No. DoC has a custom CvGameCoreDLL. All mods with a custom CvGameCoreDLL do not work on Mac OS X.
Quote:For Windows, Firaxis bundled some of the C++ code into the DLL so that we could recompile it to change things. Unfortunately, for Mac, everything is directly coded into the executable and cannot be changed. DoC relies heavily on DLL changes so a Mac port is not feasible.

I guess RtR doesn't really on custom dll besides this 18+ players feature, and works fine without it, so I have never realised about this Mac OS incompatibility before.

I must have missed the information about starting up the test server scared I remember it being mentioned at the beginning but I didn't notice follow ups when I was once in awhile skimming through the lengthy post.

Nevertheless it's a good idea to try. I was once working setup of BtS server on linux using PlayOnLinux (overlay on top of the wine) and I will try to setup PlayOnMac tomorrow.
