Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

I printed your instructions so I can refer to them, I will try it tonight. Thanks for all the assistance. If I can't get my version patched, I will try Ozymandous' advice about getting the full game I downloaded from JonSulivan's site working. Not real sure about "setting up a folder."

I am using XP home. As I got version 1.0 running I don't expect I need to visit Sirian's instructions about running the game in XP. But what I did as far as I can recall to get 1.0 working with XP doesn't seem to work with the unzipped file for JonSullivan. On the other hand, it probably isn't in a folder on my hard drive.

Not quite sure where else it would be, its with a bunch of unzipped files in and unzipped (not sure of the term) the Unzip wizard set up. Too bad everything needs zippers. Velcro would work better for me.

Since MOO is a older game most modern soundcards won’t work with it. There isn’t much that can be done about that unless you’re willing to use a bootdisk or DOSbox. Depending on your soundcard, you may be able to find driver for it that will allow it to work with a DOS program.

I would first check the documentation for your soundcard and see if anything like that is mentioned. You can also check the manufacturers website for drivers.

After that try plugging your soundcard into google with "dos drivers" and see what you come up with. You might find something that you can patch your soundcard with or you might end up having to edit your windows startup files, depending on what soundcard you have and what’s available for it.

Give this one a try (http://www.hyperionics.com/hsdx/)

Here is a quote from their help file:

Quote:Always tricky to capture properly, DirectX (or the older Glide standard) represents a challenge because the data on the screen isn't really "part" of the Windows desktop. DirectX applications run in "full screen" mode, which means they're more or less like an old DOS program, with simulated "direct access" to the hardware. Getting at their video content can be difficult.

Folks like game reviewers (or even people who just want to show off how good they are at a game) can capture a series of images from an ongoing full-screen game, and they can do so without leaving their game to assign filenames for each file created when you capture a screen. Here's a walk-through.

I haven’t gotten a chance to try it out as I am about to head off for class but it sounds like exactly what you are looking for. If not let me know, I found a couple of other good prospects during my search.

I'm in. I'm looking forward to it, although I suspect I will learn more once we get on to the higher difficulties, since I have managed to beat Impossible a couple of times already. Oh, and one more vote for more games, as well.

Thanks Sirian!

Game and report complete, sans screenies. I do have some save game files so I can take some limited screenies later if I find something that works for me.

I'll delurk and join in as well. I've been silently following the civ epics during work breaks since they started. I even started a few, but there's a bit too much management in the civ endgame to my taste, and I invariably stop playing my games once I feel I have a winning position. MOO1 is a different animal as best as I can remember.

As I recall, I was at the level where I could occasionally win on impossible in favorable of circumstances. I'm interested to see how I'll do once I apply almost a decade of lessons from other strategy games to this classic.

PS. Is there a pointer to the to attack hit probability chart around anywhere? I certainly don't have a copy of the manual anymore smile

You can find a copy of the manual here.
On average, everybody thinks they are above average.

I haven't tried to get screenshots yet, but has anyone gotten the sound to work yet in XP?

I get *some* of the FX sounds, while others make a 'chunk/clunk' noise, but I can't get the music to play at all...
I have sound working under XP with DOSBox. On this notebook (mobile Celeron 1.2GHz, 640MB RAM, 20GB drive), I use CPU Cycles 6000, Frameskip 2. SoundBlaster emulation is I/O 220, IRQ 7 (it's a legacy-free notebook -- no parallel port), and DMA 1 with matching settings in MOO Install. The sound circuitry is a SiS 7018. I came to the DOSBox settings by starting at high CPU Cycles and low Frameskip values and adjusting them until the opening played without video/audio (effects AND music) stuttering -- this is with other applications open:

Explorer (opened to my games/reports folder)
Boxer
DOSBox
MOO
Notepad (reporting)
Paint (screenies)
Mozilla w/6 tabs (collateral research)

Screenshots are taken with Alt+PrtSc. The one drawback to this setup is that I MUST play MOO windowed -- if I try to run full-screen or accidentally hit Alt+Enter, things lock and I have to restart. Gotta find a way to disable Alt+Enter within DOSBox as opposed to within Application (Shortcut) Program Properties. Hope this helps!

Be seeing you...

Isit - I just tried that capture utility and it only produced blank screens.
