Turn 1 came in last night and I was pouring over the C&D as a way to burn off the nervous energy of watching my alma mater's football team fall apart. They lost, and I played the turn and went to bed, leaving the C&D to rot.

Turn 2 came in today, and here's as far as I've explored:

A nice city can be put on the tile with T0 on it - it will be able to improve the fish & take the corn for further growth. Ideally we'll want to chop the tree before that happens, but we'll have to see how that fits into the planning. Another coastal spot can be had SW of where my scout ended T1. Alternatively we can settle 1N of T0 and on T1.

In 2 more turns I'll be getting a border pop and a fair bit of sight when my culture hits the hills north and south of my capital. So I think the scout will go SW-SE next turn to prevent overlap.

As far as the C&D stuff goes, it's all a little iffy, at here are demos at turn 2:

Scooter was the only one who didn't settle on t1, but assuming starts are similar then he wasn't the only one to move from the plains hill.

GNP:
On t1 we had 1 civ with 21 GNP and the other 2 at 16. 21 GNP is either Ruff researching Bronze Working while working a 1c tile or Ichabod going Masonry first. Because there is no way for Ruff to be at 16 GNP due to being Creative, that means Ruff is likely researching Bronze Working while working a 1c tile. So both Rego & Ichabod are working a 0c tile and researching a 1st row tech, because that's the only way they can be at 16 GNP.

Based on how much rival average increased t2, Scooter's GNP is somewhere between 19 and 21. Assuming he is working the fish tile for 3c & 3f then a first row tech would put him at 19 GNP; a 2nd row tech would put him at 21. So that doesn't narrow scooter down at all, I know, but I suspect he is working the fish (see MFG and Crop sections for evidence why), but we'll have to wait for a tech increase before we can guess what he's researching.

MFG:
On t1 we had 1 opponent working a 4h overall, 1 opponent working a 3h or 4h, and another working 2h. When scooter planted his city that changed to knowing 1 civ working 4h, 1 working 3h, and 2 working 2h overall. So I'm going to say scooter planted on a PFH by the lake for the 2h. I think 1 of Ichabod/Rego moved to the lake and is working the plains forest hill for 4h, and I have no idea why the 3rd person is at 3h and 0c.

Crop:
2 opponents are working a 3f tile, and 2 are working a 5f tile. I know scooter is one of those 5f tiles because on t1 it was 1 civ working a 5f tile and 2 working 3f.

Land
Scooter has 8 land tiles. 1 of Ruff / Ichabod / Rego have 8 and the others have 9. So someone else is on flat land beside the lake, and the other two likely SIP.

So how does this add up? If Ruff is working a 1c tile, and scooter working the 3f3c fish, then ruff & ichabod must both be working a 0c tile, but at least one of them is working a 1f,3h? We know at least one of them moved off the hill, so what if one of them have the rice beside the plains forest hill? In that case they could have planted on the rice and worked the we would have someone with 3f, 4h, and 16 GNP. That would also mean if Rego did this his first worker would be out in 10 being EXP, 1 faster than I could possibly build a worker if I was EXP with this start. (So I hope this isn't the case, otherwise I'd be a little miffed...)

Say Ruff is working a 3f,1c tile to be the other 5f - this time at 5f, 2h, 21 GNP. That leaves Ichabod as being the last 3f, 3 or 4h, and 16 GNP (0c) - which points to him working a plains forest that is beside his capital.

Well, we'll keep track of how the demos change and if that can unravel the mystery. I hope I'm wrong about Rego getting a 3f city plant right beside the PFH though...

I was kidding about the restarting again thing you know...

Turn 3

We're playing again!
And the demos continue to make little to no sense. What I know for certain is that Ruff_hi moved and settled by the lake. Why? Because last turn I was in 3rd place in land with 9 tiles; and this turn I am in 4th place in land. Ruff is the only Creative civ and his borders would have popped at end of last turn. So he must have been one of our 8 tile starts, meaning he moved beside the lake.

But I can't make heads or tails of lining up any GNP now, so I can only assume we don't have the same yields in our BFC. Either that or people played the first three turns differently.

I also know Commodore's anagrams are not as good as my anagrams shakehead

We found sugar in the south. Picture next turn, when borders pop at the capital.

Turn 4

Ruff swapped tiles after his border pop and is now working a plains forest hill. I know he also didn't settle on a pfh to start (either that or he's choosing to work a 0f2h tile now). So if we assume he has a start similar to mine I'm guessing he moved 1E to settle by the lake and keep all 3 resources in the BFC. I just can't make GNP work with that arrangement...

I sent the scout southeast and we found a jungly area. If I've kept up to date on my Commodore maps this likely means a contested area full of resources for us to REX toward. wink

Borders popped at end of turn and we got this picture:

I marked blue lines where coast appears in the fog. So we could have 4 land bridges going in every diagonal; you can't really tell yet. Our current plan for a 2nd city is going on the red square, but now that there is a coastal plains hill maybe we need to send it farther west?

Further scouting is needed. Do we let our first warrior head west to scout out the west? Or do we bring our scout back and map out the starting area? I think the scout needs to try to explore abroad and the warrior gets to go for the west coast, a few turns before the settler is done.

And look at that scoreboard. We finished Fishing at end of turn, perfectly timed with the border pop. If we had stayed with a Normal sized map, we probably would have skipped going Fishing first so we could get Bronze Working early enough to revolt before the 2nd city. But the timing is close enough here that we are going to get BW the turn we settle city #2 and revolt while we're improving it's pasture.

As I said in chat, I see no reason to intentionally catch extra water (ocean ones even) tiles by planting on the PH unless there is seafood that we can't catch otherwise. But yeah we should definitely send the warrior there to scout the area out thoroughly before we plant. Pulling the scout back now is probably a big waste, it should just keep on going and we could proxy scout our land if we find someone else's area anyway.

Well, I guess the main benefit to planting on the hill is hill defense for a coastal city, which is nice. Still, we'd sacrifice a lot of overlap capability with the riverside grasslands that will be cottaged early.

Severe lack of food in the north...I hope there's some seafood over there.
