[No Players]PBEM L for the Lurkers

I think that you handled this fairly well, Ceilazul. You were placed (and inly partially by yourself) into a tough position.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Honestly, if these guys think revealing 1 or 10 tiles in the initial screenshot will balance this game, they won't like anything the script can produce.

I have no ego in this, I just want to see a good game. Hope it flies.

Sorry Ceil, seems like you've been stuck between a rock and a hard place. frown

That said, if you want to kinda step back, I can roll up a new map for them to use and take control over all of that. It's up to you though, since you have the reins right now.

Argh, Krill's ultimatum response is so annoying to me. That is the exact same way Krill acted previously about the ISDG (except without the overflow into other games as well). If others don't agree with his opinion, he simply refuses to participate because he seems to believe his opinion always represents the most noble and fair opinion. I have always gotten a long with Krill fine personally but that is a ridiculous way to handle disagreements. I will never play a game with him again.

Ceil, that's an impossible situation, but they really needed to be clearer in what they were asking of you.

Brick, i wouldn't roll a thing until all the players have agreed to what is going to happen. We may need to ask questions for extrapolation because they clearly didn't think it through with the first request -- or they thought it through but didn't communicate it well enough

I completely agree.

Thanks for being willing Brick, yeah don't jump the gun. I also recommended some balance ideas in Seven's torusland thread, so hopefully that will make the initial map more balanced.

Just want to make sure, does this mean you'd like me to just take it and start anew? I want to make sure before I do so.

At this point, starting fresh map/civs anyway, it doesn't matter who does it. I'm willing to do it again, but i figure I botched it enough to give someone else a try.

If I'm in charge, I'd actually post in the tech thread some things I noticed that wre imbalances in the script so they can ok them. Things like:
-grassland gold at the start
-windmill improvements nearby
-differences in *walking distance* between rivals.
-"my" resources (with balanced resources selected) on the wrong side of lakes.
-gross differences in lux access (like 5 for one player, 12 for another)

If they can get past those things... what's a little fog??

Next thing you know Krill is going to blame vanilla BTS for this game collapsing in ignominy and hubris. lol
