Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

This is gonna be good: von Adlercreutz and Taotao

I moved settlers onto sites A and B and generally just kept building what was being built. Assembly line is in next - should I keep building what is being built, or switch over to factories?

Just a reminder of the password

Sounds good, thank you.
Cities with decent hammers (about 20+ base?) probably could do with switching over to factories, low hammer cities can just keep on doing what they're doing.

Turn 188:

I set up Alavro the way you said - that gives -5 food, which means the city starves in 5 turns. Just so you know.

you got a great merchant! I think the idea is to kick off the GA next turn?

Many factories dialed up.

Saving gold and will hit economics next turn. Still firing off the GA next turn? Also, founded two cities (left them with default names)

All sounds great thank you.
I should be back well in time to pick up the next turn before it rolls and decide on GA etc. after having looked around.

Some short thoughts and updates on the game.

Gavagai has declared war on dtay and taken about 7(?) cities. I suspect that all these might be island cities, but I haven't got eyes in the region so can't tell for sure.
There's positives in here. Dtay had the top crop yield before the war and probably the second best position to win with a defensible core and Sistine enabling a culture run. If my goal was to end up 2nd in the game I probably should be thrilled...

Honestly, if I ended up 2nd in this 23 person game in my first multiplayer game I'd be very happy with that.
However, I hate it when other people concede a game to the runaway without even trying to stop him.

...That's why I've moved some of my troops since I came back rather aggressively.
Here I have to give it to REM though. If he hadn't paid attention and left his units in place for one more turn, his moai city would've burnt now. Along with that I'd probably also have taken at least two island cities off his hands. Now I believe I've got two ~50% shots at razing two island cities of his. Not the gains I was hoping for. I'm still debating doing so though.

Basically, I've more or less caught up with REM in crop yield and science output. In production I'm behind at the moment, but will catch up once I've Industrialised. Soldier wise I'm ahead. My problem is that I'm behind in researched techs (Biology + Electricity + Democracy) and he will surge ahead in gnp once again as soon as he finishes SoL. Something has to be done. If I don't do it soon REMs industrialised nation will have put up much stronger defenses. And I can’t count on help from any others.
So, attack???

So, a few more thoughts/explanations:
This is not intended as "the final war" that will throw REM back to the stone age and myself into an unassailable lead.
At best: I eventually end up with a couple/few new cities. I open up new avenues for potential commando strikes in the end game and I set back REM slightly by razing a couple of well developed cities.
At worst: REM initially hold me to a standstill at our main border. He's able to reinforce the islands better than me and grab my southern holdings. DZ honours the DP and grab my southern mainland. When I shuffle units to deal with the English REM hits me from my weakened north and wham! there goes my core. My biggest island (and last stronghold) falls once REM has gathered enough marines and bombers (which won't necessarily take that long).

Some people like to go for high risk - high reward plays.
I'd say this is more of a medium to high risk - poor reward play crazyeye

Anyway, how did the first round go?
Well, as I said earlier, REM managed to cover everything in his core to the point where no land unit attack made sense.
On the south island though I had thought about hitting Chelyabinsk.
Only REM covered that as well...
BUT
his shuffling had left Vologda without Subutai-the-infantry!

I don't really like those ha's either. They're expensive to upgrade to cossacks, but sadly 4 cossacks here would mean no end of trouble for me in trying to deal with them...
On we go.
Alt-click on REMs name, then...
Oh shit what have I done?? Ohdear
Ah well,
start off with an airship attacking the pike, then:

c2 cav vs inj pike (90%)… WIN (4hits)
cav vs c2 ha (99,3)… WIN (1hit)
cav vs c2 ha (99,3)… WIN (2hits)
c2 knight vs c2 ha (96,2%)… WIN (1hit)

Those were all the 2-movers I had in Ratan.
Luckily I had loaded up a ha on an EI the turn before and after an airship bombed the remaining ha...

c2 ha vs inj c1 ha (87,3%)… WIN!

Nice infra, but sadly I can't keep it just now frown
I'm hoping I'll be able to resettle in a few turns (and I have a settler on the next island), but who knows?

I earlier said I had two 50% shots at taking decent cities.
I lied.
Some tests show me that the other city (Astrakhan on the east side of the island) has just enough defenders that I need way too much luck to take it and this means there are no further land battles this turn.

However, moving up my positions I do notice a couple of undefended tiny islands like this one:

(Kept until REM dares to send a galleon north)
and the gold-uranium-aluminium-oil island bare visible in the south of the screenshot (burnt)

I also had a few naval battles.
The main ones were just north of my core, roughly in this arena:

and just listing all of them one after another they went like this:

frigate vs c1 frigate (27%)… WIN!?!
frigate vs c1 frigate (27%)… LOSS (2hits)
c1 EI vs c1 inj frigate (67,7%)… WIN (3hits)

frigate vs inj c1 frigate (52%)… WIN! (4hits)
frigate vs inj c1 frigate (52%)… WIN! (2hits)
EI vs inj c1 frigate (35%)… WITHDRAW (3hits)
EI vs c1 galleon (75,1%)… WIN (4hits)
EI vs inj c1 frigate (98,1%)… FLAWLESS WIN

c2 frigate vs frigate (67,6%)… LOSS (3hits)
frigate vs c1 galleon (96%)… WIN (4hits)
c1 frigate vs c1 galleon (98%)… WIN (2hits)
frigate vs inj frigate (99,6%)… WIN (2hits)

c1 EI vs c1 frigate (10,9%)… LOSS (5hits!)
EI vs inj c1 frigate (99%)…WIN

Pre-industrialisation this would've been a pretty hard blow on REMs naval presence. Now not so much, BUT it does force him to either give up much of the naval scene for a few turns or build additional frigates just before he gets access to steel ships...

As it turns out, this limited fighting earned both REM and me a great general each.
Wonder who'll be the first to start the commando shenanigans? mischief
(we both have Military Science).

As for Donovan I haven't made a single move against him and offered him peace and 10g.
As I've said earlier I believe he'll stick with REM, but I say it's worth it giving peace a chance (as long as I am/could become at war with REM). He's got reason to hate me from knocking his Zulu out of the competition, but since he took over the English I'd consider my most aggressive move to road an unnecessary hill on his border...
(Additionally I did take 3 cities from him (and threatened another), but those were all cities he had sniped from me.)

While I wait for REM to play his turn I remembered that I haven't shown you this, my current civics:

Otherwise they remain the same:
Representation/Mercantilism for specialists,
Free religion for science (haven't spread taoism enough for OR or Theo)
and Serfdom for 1h/mine (instead of the gold/mine- hammer/windmill combo of emancipation) and 1-t railroads when I get the tech.
(speaking of which, I've been low on workers (~30), but last turn I did also grab 5 from REM which will come in handy if we take peace...)
But last turn before the GA I grabbed myself Economics and switched into Environmentalism.
- I'm mostly building factories and coal plants for now so the xp-loss isn't that bad at the moment.
- To try and steal Pentagon I actually need those +3 health or I would shrink a size in Alavo (and generally I can postpone health buildings ever so slightly)
- those specialist/farm/pasture boni actually aren't insignificant.
- 2xp does mean loads of good stuff though (amphi-horse HE-units, 1 extra move on all ships, future commando units etc.), so if I don't get P. I might just have to switch back to Vassalage...

Might be that I'm running unoptimal civics, but can't be bothered doing more thorough calculations than I have.
If someone want to have a crack at finding better combos I'll post a count I did of my worked improvements on t179:

84 mines
50 towns
41 farms
34 pastures
30 watermills
13 workshops
11 specialists +2*53…
10 camps
10 plantations/wineries
8 windmills
4 quarries
2 lumbermills

Another thing.
The last day I've been beating myself up over one oversight of mine.
I've been eye-ing up the tech tree to see if there's any tech I could skip to close the gap for a space race.
And I think I found one.
It's Artillery.
Basically Artillery (the unit) are amazing, but possible to do without. Anti-tanks aren't as good as your own tanks. Transports are great, but EIs have the same cargo places and just one less move for 66% the hammers. Finally Destroyers can be replaced by Battleships.
Only problem is that my main idea for keeping parity in the seas has been reaching Destroyers on the same turn or quicker than REM can field Battleships. With him up Electricity on me I doubt I can afford anything but a straight push to Arty.
Ah well, there´s still some 250k beakers left to research, so skipping a military tech might not be the wisest anyway...
