[PB60] Amicalola and Vanrober: Gone' Fishing!

The demos looked really good this turn, considering our pick. I'm GNP-cheating with 20% Masonry, and the rival best just whipped, but it still made me happy. smile

T60-64

A few civilian whips later, and our demos (and egos) have come crashing back to earth. This looks more like what I expected. lol

Fun thread, even if demos and/or egos have taken a bit of a hit. As for future workers/fishers, I'd like to nominate Huckleberry Finn, Simple Simon, and Thor.

We founded our 5th city, Mackerel. It will whip a monument (probably), but we're working on a granary for now just in case Judaism pops there. We're falling a bit behind the curve on cities - we were nearly last to 5, and 6+7 will be settled over the next ten turns. That probably is just the price we pay for the pick; Jowy also appears to be falling behind. However, 4 granaries feels pretty good, so it might not be that bad yet.

As the research says, we'll get Monotheism in 4 turns for Judaism. No one had Polytheism last turn, so hopefully we'll be the first there. We're the last team with no convenient way to pop borders, so this is really important. Someone else (Mjmd?) already has Metal Casting! eek

Thanks! Always appreciate more workers names.

Are another of the prettier fish I've looked at. Colours!

Well, until you cook them, apparently. mischief

That was a very exciting turn roll, and Tuna is now a very exciting city.

It's sweet, really. Although the citizens of Tuna seem to have decided to build GLH in the middle of the channel, which I think is the opposite of how lighthouses are supposed to work. wink

All jokes aside, this is probably the worst spot for Judaism to land, but it's still not terrible. It's amazing long-term, but right now it's a little rough because a) a temple here will compete with great merchant points, and b) Tuna has ~600 things to build already, so missionaries are tricky. Sardines would also have been 'meh' as well, but doesn't have to build Moai. Mackerel would have been great for a foothold in the north, but even slower to get going. So neither of those would have been too much better than Tuna. Only Flathead would have been the nuts, which I was really hoping for, but it wasn't very likely so can't really complain. Overall, very good news to get Judaism at all! smile

Edit: Maybe we should consider Moai in Sardine instead. It's worse, but MUCH faster. Also, we need to decide whether to risk an uber-fast prophet (with the high risk of merchant), or go the (very) slow way from another city. I'm leaning risky right now.

I see no problem. Any approaching ship will be warned by the lighthouse about the dangerous objects in the middle of the channel. neenerneener

Hey the strategy went really well! Im really glad, also we are in a decent possition, same amount of cities than SD and GKC and more than Jowy, having own religion and TGLH. Now we can expand fast claiming land without lose money being PRO plus that.
It seems we screwed Jowy, since he had sailing really early and still 4 cities, i guess he was trying to get it.

Here's an up-to-date overview of the Maritime Empire. Cod, our sixth city, was founded this turn, as a cheap filler spot that requires little worker labour (except the silver, which we would have mined anyway). One nice thing about the Jewish Holy-Tuna is that it's central to the empire - I think that slightly increases the chance of natural spreads?

I think of the initial four cities (Salmon, Tuna, Flathead, Sardine) as the 'core,' each with a primary responsibility. Sardine will probably get the first (and possibly only?) missionary spread from Tuna, and will then take responsibility for pumping out missionaries. Salmon will grow onto cottages before returning to settler duty, while Flathead is now on worker duty. Tuna will build a missionary and temple for Shrine reasons, and then start Moai as the stone connects. Other cities will take a long time to be set up, so it will be these four carrying the empire for a long time.

Our power is getting worryingly low, as you can see from the scoreboard ratios. We will build an axe and a spear in 4 turns, but even then we need to keep a close eye out for spikes.

I'm also quite pleased with how our game is going. Expanding fast after a slow early-game is something I'm decent at, so I feel that we're in a position that plays to our strengths. I also wonder if we screwed Jowy, for the exact reasons Vanrober says. It'll be interesting to see after the game.

As the turns get more involved, I'm going to start reporting them more frequently. Hopefully some of our discussion will be interesting to lurkers as well. smile

Some interesting observations from the Info Dump:
- Salmon has thus far produced every settler for the empire, currently at 5.
- It also produced the first 4 workers, but Flathead produced numbers 5-6.
- Tuna has produced 0 of either, despite being our second city. What a resource-hog!
- We haven't slowed down in technology yet, despite our poor GNP. The longest gap between techs so far was between Animal Husbandry and Bronze Working (T19-32; 14 turns). I wonder if that will change now as we begin our Classical push.

Cod

have a very cool goatee tendril. Apparently it's a sensory organ, but I think it's double-purposed as a fashion accessory. They eat cod all the time in Europe (I think), but I've never had it.

Nicely done, glad you were able to get GLH at a decent date without it slowing down your expansion too much. I’m curious how tech rates are across the board, this being the first game played at this difficulty in a while. Which classical techs will you be prioritizing?
