[Spoiler] Fintourist loses his multiplayer virginity

Thanks for the game, Fintourist. I have now skimmed your thread and finally got to see your attacks on Sareln and on my own empire!
First thing's first, I just want to clear up what was happening those last few turns. For clarity's sake, I played three turns: the one I took Barcelona and failed to defend Armenelos properly, the turn before where I moved my army out, and the turn before, where I sim
Uh, this is what that was supposed to say. Don't know why the forum ate only part of the post. Luckily the whole thing was still on my clipboard:
Thanks for the game, Fintourist. I have now skimmed your thread and finally got to see your attacks on Sareln and on my own empire! First thing's first, I just want to clear up what was happening those last few turns. For clarity's sake, I played three turns: the one I took Barcelona and failed to defend Armenelos properly, the turn before where I moved my army out, and the turn before, where I simply whipped. As I stated elsewhere, my defence of Armenelos was truly stupid: I whipped a crossbow because I forgot the janissary's bonus applied against archery units too, and calculated the crossbow was exactly as strong against a janissary as a mace, plus the first strike and the opportunity to take City Garrison promotions. Really moment that I realized right after sending the save. As for not moving another mace in, that was entirely conscious : I had a spare mace and decided to put him in Barcelona to guard against amphibious assault; that was the result of carelessly eyeballing the situation instead of running a simple sim. Reading the combat logs, I'm fairly certain the city would have held (that turn) if I had corrected those two mistakes. I am very frustrated with myself over this; while I know I am not a very good player, I still think I am better than this. ![]() With regard to the gold-per-turn/strike thing, the gold-per-turn situation was actually fine while I controlled Armenelos and its cottages. Losing Armenelos was not part of the plan. ![]() Big picture: you're completely right, Fintourist, in that my error was in (massive) underexpansion. I spent my time in this game mangling my cities with infrastructure whips that didn't even help me; I honestly think I whipped too much, but the main problem is that it wasn't settlers, workers, and the boats to get them places. But the real real problem was that ... I simply checked out of the game, rather early on. Your confusion over my failure to switch civics/religion promptly when I founded Judaism - that was me simply forgetting for several turns, because I was just mailing it in. Well, a little more effort than just mailing it in, but my heart-and-soul wasn't in it. I'm sorry not to have put up more of a challenge ... not that I could have put up much more of a challenge: I simply did not (and probably still do not) understand the need to constantly expand, and looking back, good gosh my civ/leader picks were awful (I could have had Sury!!!), as was my early expansion. Oh well; much lost, much learned. Oh, and by no means were you comments too harsh, Fintourist. I was telling myself the same things throughout the game (just not acting on them ... ). You did not come across as insulting. ![]() Anyway, congratulations on a very well-played game, and on your successful warfare, which I find the most interesting! I look forward to working with you in PB13, not that I think I can be much help, and I think you should probably ignore most everything I say as either redundant or total . This game, I get the ![]() award. Have fun in the rest of the game; I shall observe your progress with interest!
I agree with THH that none of ur comments were really harsh, most of the things like the :weed: moves were completely true which I was kicking myself for, later on.
Oh and btw if my name is pronounced bye.

Turn 168
Thanks for your thoughts and wishes Hydra! ![]() Ok, lets do a quick update since I'm currently travelling. The biggest news clearly was: Sareln seems to finally come for revenge! ![]() There are 3 Frigates 3 Galleons and ~10 Muskets in Garum. I really doubt those units are there just for defensive purposes.. This is of course very bad news for me since Lemongrass is binding bunch of my Frigates and I don't have that many additional ships in the area. Well, at least I got a warning. Now, I'm transferring even more Janissaries from North into area and prepare to whip more Frigates and defenders..Another confirmation of the threat is that the amount of muskets in Lemongrass decreased. Since I don't believe that Sareln deleted his units I'm guessing that there are already several Muskets loaded into Galleons.. I must pay attention here! Theocracy starts to sound even better. That works for ships also, right??In other news, Azza keeps expanding and is going to settle the former Northern areas of Hydra (There's a settler below a musket): Unfortunately it seems that I have to delay my aggressions a bit. I need to clear my Eastern front first or at least strenghten defenses before I can relocate my forces..
Theocracy applies to all units built in cities with the state religion.

Turn 169
There would be a lot to write about this turn, but I have to do it quickly.. 1. Sareln had attacked with 1 Frigate out of Lemongrass against my 3 Frigate stack... and of course he won with those 32 % odds. I can't see why he did that move that and therefore I was pissed off that this gamble had paid off.2. Sareln had advanced with that 3 Frigate, 3 Galleon stack that I spotted last turn. Ok, that was to be expected, but of course it's still bad news.3. After a long while of thinking I organized my defenses. I have now a 6 Frigate stack outside Lemongrass (Sareln can hit it with 5 healthy Frigates, 1 wounded Frigate & Galleons). If Sareln does take the shot at that stack I have 2 Frigates in range to punish wounded attackers. I also strengthened the defenses of those two cities that could be boated next turn ("Three To A Can" & "Rafa's Spin"). I also did position 4 Galleons so that I can quickly reinforce couple of other cities either directly or by chaining, in case Sareln decides to target some other cities. I also whipped a bunch of additional Frigates, if my current forces are not enough to handle Sareln's aggression I will whip another junk of ships in two turns while revolting at the same time into Theocracy. Aand I got my revenge! One of my sentry frigates spotted a lonely frigate of Sareln heading towards the battle front. Wounding it decently would have been enough to keep it out of the action, but thanks to a nice roll the situation in 32 % wins is now Sareln 1 - Fintourist 1.And because picture tells always more: |
