The game is too big for me to follow every thread but Rusten's opening despite missing Hinduism feels very strong.

I definitely agree that he has played a good opening as evident by his demos. However, he's been helped a lot by that early gold tile and his otherwise very good land for the early game. For instance, compare his 2nd and 3rd cities to Krill's or pindicator's. Apart from that, imo, the true price of his religious play isn't visible yet. He has sunk a lot of beakers into poly, mono and masonry, which means that he'll most likely be late to techs such as alpha, math, currency and metal casting, though his strong play in general helps to mitigate that. I'm assuming he doesn't have sailing yet either.
If he doesn't land mono (e.g. what's GKC doing?), he'll be a bit screwed in that regard as his first great person has to be either a prophet to bulb theology or a GS. To get that prophet, he'll have to research priesthood and build a temple to generate GP points, which will delay the other key techs even longer. He doesn't have writing yet so he's not even close to starting to generate GS points.

Quote:Thoughts on best start? Or what ones have you tried
I've only done 3 properly. Basically people whose thread I follow and when I see a decision that seems iffy I try out the other way.
I played through Dark Savant's start to convince myself that I hadn't screwed up by leaving him the option of moving. This is T50 and I have Stonehenge built on T43, same as in game.
I didn't like how long Pin was delaying the Damascus city below. It's got two 6 yield tiles in the first ring, need to get it online ASAP IMO.
For Krill I wanted to try settling the plains hill plant cows city first. It's 8 yield at size 1 as opposed to the 5 yield of the clam city. It still has the fish in the 2nd ring, so if you time it right you actually get an earlier fish hookup.
Dark Savant's was the easiest start IMO, but I think he's slowed himself down a lot.
BTW, in general I agree with Krill that OH and Rusten are the two I'd trust to find the best opening for their start. Rusten's built a lot more plains hill mines than I feel comfortable with though, so I'm tempted to try his start next to see if there's a way to improve it. Not sure I can make it an entirely fair comparison though given his religion situation.
I also learned that I should really just sign up for another game ...

For those interested in a dot map challenge, check out BaII's most recent (t58) pic. The area to the east of his cap is diabolical.
Spoiler for one variation.

Kinda irritating as a lurker to have simultaneous 'I brought my [solitary] scout home' and 'yet another turn without meeting anybody'.
