[PB60] Amicalola and Vanrober: Gone' Fishing!

T0 (!!!)

We're away! jive That was an amazingly fast setup process. Our password is 'fish' .

Moved the scout 2E as we discussed. Depending on what's on the other side, the plains hill could be a candidate for 2nd/3rd city, sharing the cows and with 2+ floodplains. I think next we want to go 1SE?

Strangely, the game already knew the names of all the players. Normally you have to claim your civ for it to know (the default is just your leader name). What was the difference here?

Edit: Something I did for PB59 that I really liked was use 'safe dates' as benchmarks for wonders. These are dates that I think nobody else would build the wonder by. So for example, Stonehenge I had T40 written down.

What do you think the safe date for GLH here is. Turn 60, maybe? Jowy or Mjmd feel like the competition.

I set the leader names in the worldbuilder file manually.

We found Salmon on the sugar, and start a worker. Research is set to Agriculture->Animal Husbandry, to connect our food resources. We've revealed two silvers, which means we at least won't have zero luxuries. I'm going to guess that there are silvers, golds, and maybe gems split amongst the players. That was an aspect of PB58 that I liked.

The scout finds two food resources, and I really wish we were Creative right now. It would allow us to settle cities on the plains hill the scout is currently on, and the plains hill 3E of Salmon. I told you it was a good trait! neenerneener

That said, the site with clams+wheat first-ring, and three floodplains, could be a real winner. Mayyybe we settle on the plains hill and pop borders somehow, but my suspicion is that with our pick, we need to go as fast as possible. No time to lose!

Good salmon:

Better salmon:

These turns are flying by so far. Our scout has uncovered more resources to the south, and importantly more coast too. It looks a bit like we're on a ring-shaped landmass, with coast along the southern edge just in the fog of war.

I think we have two options with the scout. We can either keep heading East to check out that direction, or we can double back to check for seafood, or if I'm even right about my guess. What do you think, Vanrober?

Edit: Also, that plains-hill 1S of the scout looks like a bonkers 3-5th city.

Tarkeel said that he would make some kind of PB58 map so i expect like a grid map, with round seas between land. We could try to round that circle of sea but it seems that it would be some civs probably in the middle. So i would try to round towards the west coast and then towards north to see the suroanding of the capitol.

Since the capital expanded borders and we've scouted some more, here's a new overview.

When I saw the coast layout south of that plains-hill, I wondered if there would be an ocean seafood to present a choice; seafood later or plains hill now. That was another aspect I liked in PB58. So finding that fish was cool. smile

It did for a 2nd time already make me wish we'd picked Creative though. Grumble grumble. The scout is going to head 1W, then 1NW, and then we will decide whether to check out the east for players or the west for close land.

We debated whether to send the scout further east for contacts or north-west for the rest of our immediate area. The latter won.

Tech has sped up thanks to working the whale tile. That was the reason that Fishing/Mining felt so important for this start, even though we don't start on the coast. They're more expensive than Agriculture and Hunting, and Fishing speeds those up too. The other option would have been Fishing/The Wheel (Japan), but I wanted to try either Cothons or Praetorians more. Stalin of Japan could be a fun (if bad) pick to try at some point, though.

The scout has revealed a total of 3 ocean fish along the southern coast. The western two will make fine cities long-term, but are very low priority. Most likely, we want to settle these after Mathematics, so we can 1-turn a monument. Good backfill spots, though. The eastern spot also gets a 1st-ring pigs, so will be settled sooner. But it is far away, so I would expect it to be in the 4th-6th city range; for example, the clam/wheat spot would probably come first.

The map looks suspiciouslly like a donut. You wouldn't do that to me, Tarkeel, right? Right?? scared

Found two more ocean fish. So are we derailing everything for a Stonehenge rush or what? mischief

The good news is, a lot of cities will work on the plains hills. For example, the hill 3W of Salmon is a nice filler city, and the hill 1W of the cows is a great early city. Albeit two more that need monuments. All these monument cities will be good practice for worker micro, in chopping them out ASAP.

Worker is out 'n about. Next turn will start farming the corn. If Vanrober (or lurkers) have any recommendations for worker name-themes, I'm all ears. I know some people don't bother, but I enjoy the personality it gives, plus it makes sign spam easier. tongue

General Thought: With all of the ocean fish, Creative is THE trait to have on this map. Nothing else comes close to the growth benefit that CRE would bring here, not even IMP (which is a weird reversal of the norms; poor Lazteuq). If the other's starts are similar, which feels likely given the PB58 vibes, then GKC+Mjmd+Superdeath won the picking phase, and Jowy+Lazteuq+Us lost it. Whoops. bang

Edit (2nd General Thought): I usually like early granaries in the capital. That feels good here, as our new cities will be very slow to get up-and-running, so we'll rely more on the capital early.
