[PB60] Amicalola and Vanrober: Gone' Fishing!

T48-50

Overview

Our 4th city will be settled on the (obsolete) '5' sign on T54, and work the copper to build a monument->work boat->granary. Slow city, but once borders pop, it'll be strong, working Fish/Copper/Lake/Silver. The cow/horse site is objectively better, but I'm not sure we can spare the worker labour yet, so it will be our 5th city.

Demos are looking alright, considering again our pick and granary hammers. Again, we'll see if they collapse over the next 20 turns, or if we can vaguely keep up. The lack of culture is going to be a huge issue relative to the field.

Tech path we're thinking right now is Sailing->Myst->Masonry->Hunting->Archery. Then after that we'll reassess. If SD looks like he's getting antsy, then we'll obviously slot Hunting in earlier.

Map Thoughts

Overall, I really like this map. The shape is great; three donuts in a spiral. It's pretty and has a lot of interesting directions.
I do have some niggles. The biggest one by far is the strength of Creative, but I've covered that at length so I won't rehash it. I think it could have been toned down a little by making 1-2 of the ocean fish coastal, which would still leave CRE very strong without being The Best. The other minor niggle is that gold is technically better than silver, by 2 commerce (4 total here). I think Pindicator covered for this with base tiles (e.g. silver on plains, gold on desert), though I may be wrong. It's also possible you covered it with something that I've missed.

The choice between SIP and the sugar was nice. I do think there's an issue with it though; the copper/fish/silver/corn city makes SIP probably just as good, maybe even better because that city is so strong. But there was no way to know that from the screenshot; with our knowledge, settling on sugar was much better foodhammer-wise. Basically, I think the choice is super interesting and close with that site, but we couldn't know that until it was too late. If that makes sense.

But as I said, I like it. The shape is interesting, I like the size, I like the potential for early interaction with 3/5 players. Most of all, I like how difficult it makes a war chariot rush. wink

Not a real update but I was doing micro this turn and I realised a few things we could do better than I had written in that post. The big one is where city 4 is going, but I also realised we can 2-whip Worker->Granary instead of just a granary at Flathead. The monument gets floodplains + copper, which is good, but a worker is definitely better. smile

We settle Sardine, which will work an improved pasture next turn. Not sure if we'll have 1 worker mine silver and 1 chop, or just double-team both mines.  I realised this city is 10000% faster than the planned one. So far, we've not broken our streak of every city being connected at founding. hammer

The granary finished at Tuna. It will quickly finish up a lighthouse while Salmon borrows the whales, before growing on a galley. We want an island city pronto!

Not all good news though. There's a war chariot here:

It doesn't seem to be on a direct path towards us right now, but we'll be keeping a close eye on it. If SD does move towards us, we will easily have a spear (or two if necessary) in time. So I guess in a way it is good news, that we saw this instead of being blindsided. smile

Demos are still somewhere between bad and terrrible.

Sardines
are a lot smaller than the other fish we've used so far. And pretty!

Apparently you eat them in a can, like this.

That reminds me; gotta try Grillo's recipe...

Oddly enough when I went looking for English recipes for congee (or zhou or jook) they didn't resemble what I grew up eating much, with a lot more added ingredients. This is closer to what I have in mind, with just rice and water:

https://omnivorescookbook.com/how-to-make-congee/

It's all about the side dishes and toppings! And it turns out the canned fish I remember eating was a subspecies of carp called Chinese dace, and not a sardine after all.

Another great topping is something I can't find a great translation for: http://chopsticksandmarrow.com/2013/02/t...unny-fish/

GKC is taunting us. You can't just flaunt your Creative-ness like that, it's disgusting!  tongue

Thanks for the links! I'll have a look for that brand of fish when I'm next in the shops. smile

We're taking a break from settlers to build workers and grow our cities. Our 5th city will be settled around T65-68. Something I've been quite poor at in the past is steady, staggered expansion. This game I'd like to work on that, so that new cities can get enough workers individually, while keeping the old ones growing onto improved tiles. It's a good opportunity to practice whip cycles, too.

Superdeath's chariot is taking a southern route. He's either scouting, feinting, or heading for his southern neighbour (Mjmd?). We're guaranteed copper even if it beelines for us, now.

The demos looked really good this turn, considering our pick. I'm GNP-cheating with 20% Masonry, and the rival best just whipped, but it still made me happy. smile

Ive been a bit disconnected of the thread, but we have been talking a lot on discord. After procastinating a bit, i decided to make a bit of work into the theme of this game. Fish.

The motive of this theme was to make me learn some fish names on english, i just knew Salmon and Tuna, and i wanted to know a bit more.

So the following is going to have 3 columns. Englishname-Spanishname-Purpose
Salmon-Salmón-My favourite fish, pretty cheap on spain around 7€/kg if you buy the whole fish, so around 21-24€ a piece.
Tuna-Atún-Really empoyed on my dishes you take it from the can and eat. ITs the plug and play of the food.
Flatheads-Platicefálidos-Amica explained. BTW i didnt know that fish and it seems its not a fish but a fish cathegory called "Platycephalidae"
Sardin-Sardina-Amica explained. But i also eat them, indeed my grandad bought some when i was young and we went eat those around the village "hiding" from my grandmom since she sais my grandad is fat and that doesnt help. It was pretty funny.

My actual purposes.

Cod-Bacalao-This fish was "trash" in 60s-70s but now they are really used in spanish gastronomy. My father loves it with a tomato sauce.
Trout-trucha- This is one of my favourites, we put some "iberic ham" (jamón serrano fopr those that have tasted it, as far as i know there is only on spain) in the middle of the trout and it taste awesome. Some traitors use bacon to do so, its fine, but not the original for me. Now i have some issues with the uric acid and im not allowed to eat it (although we have a sayin on spain "una vez al año no hace daño" one time a year doesnt hurt). In the spoiler a picture.

Gilt head bream-Dorada- This is the fish i eat most at the moment, its 2€ per piece, something less than 5€/kg and economy is king. I really enjoy it with potatos in the oven.

blue whiting-Bacaladillas- This fish is the most cheap of spain, so if you go buy in the afternoon after work, its usually out of stock. ITs about 1,95€/kg, they are small so i need 3 of those to get a decent dinner. Just on the pan with a little of lemon.

megrim-gallo- Funny name for me, on spanish gallo means 2 things, one is this fish, but when you are young in the school you are taugh probably about the other "gallo" which is the rooster. So one of my first times with fish was with this one saying my mum we were going to eat "gallo" i was thinking on chicken and then i found this. My brain melted. I also like it.

Atlantic mackerel-caballa- On the funny names for me... On spanish we usually use the suffix "o" sometimes means "male or neutral"  and the "a" usually means female. Not always but you know. Horse on spanish is Caballo so when i first heard about Caballa i thought it was the female of the horse. But hey it was a fish. The female of horse its called "Yegua" just for you to know. I like this fish.

Common sole-Lenguado- I really like this name, on spanish we say Lengua for "tongue" so Lenguado is like a fish has been hit with a tongue. Ive tried sometimes and i dont have a bad remember of it.

Angler-rape- Ive tried sometimes and i also like it. It was even worst valued than cod, the fishers put them again on the sea because noone liked it. Now its pretty expensive.

Surmullet-salmonete- Called on spanish like "little salmon" and i see it really different. Their shapes are really different, and not just the size. I like it too, but i dont eat it offen.

Swordfish-pez espada- Its curious its litteral translated, not sure which lenguage was first. I ve tried sometimes, i dont like it much. I dont hate it though, if i have it on table i eat it.

Conger-Congrio- I prefer not to eat this fish, it has sooooooo many fishbones, its annoying. Well, the half closer to the head has some less, but its also more expensive. Not nice. Just for soups.

For now i think we have enough. Also, we can go with the fishes you like, so i learn some new ones.

About workers. Ive never tried to fish, its so boring for me, the closer ive been to that is fish on a fishfarm, and it was already boring for me. But i love fish, so really i dont know fishermans. jsut looked a bit on Wikipedia and 2 of the best of spain were Nuria Mallada and José Amengual. Looking a bit more, i saw Rogelio Santos, he is the major fisherman influencer of spain xD

I hope this information is usefull for someone. Please let me know if there is any mistake. All the names come from Wikipedia and maybe there is some more names or more common than what i just wrote.

Thanks for these, Vanrober! This gives me a pretty good backlog to work with. I appreciate all the descriptions, they were fun to read through. smile

No kidding, that was my first thought as well. Here our fish costs more per fillet than Vanrober's per kilo! lol

T57-59
We've started research on Hunting, and connected our silver this turn. Jowy and GKC have Sailing like us, so I looked to see if they had gold or silver connected. It looks like the northern civs have gold, and the southerners have silver. I might send Jowy a 'silver for gold' trade soon-ish, because we can get our 2nd silver connected by T68. However, I'd rather do it with SD or Lazteuq, since they're both more likely to threaten us militarily. Maybe we should wait for them to acquire sails? Decisions, decisions... noidea
