I'd suggest that we also turn on full of resources and make sure the strategics are included near the starts up to aluminum. The game might go long...
Take a look at this quest specifically. Normally it is a difficult choice: build stables for better horse archers or build weaker horse archers but earlier? The quest removes this choice, thus impoverishing the strategic aspect of the game. It is fine when it happens rarely and for one player only, thus giving him a random boon; it is a different matter entirely when it becomes routine.

Do you need a random map rolled?
Also, may I suggest that starts can be upgraded VERY slightly. IE no change in tech required, but if for instance someone starts with 3 clams, one of them could be replaced with a fish? Or someone gets rolled 2 dry sheep. I threw a map out last time because of that one. I would do the same thing as PB64 and just roll 10 for my own sanity and choose the vaguely best one.

I don't think you need to throw out maps solely because of the quality of capitals, it means much less than the overall amount and quality of expansion space unless an early rush is a possibility. But otherwise, agreed with the idea of slightly upgraded starts if absolutely necessary.

I know Gav you specifically don't like torodial maps correct?
Edit: reason I'm asking is I was thinking Torusland.

Ooh, I hate toroids too. Torusland is my nightmare, natural looking is vital imo.
If a minor edit on a capital is needed that's okay.

So here is what I was thinking with some lessons learned from last time. Pangea / tectonics often produce lopsided land area amounts. See Ginger land area vs Nauf / Amica last game. I'm thinking Lakes and cut a sea passage in the north and south like last game and that would be it.

Yes, I love to have some immersion and there can be none when you play on toroids.
