Thanks!
The archer at least managed to defeat the spear attacking across river onto a forested hill. Fortunate, based on how things went this game so far?

Also, Tarkeel's tech thread post on "something came up" makes me wonder if he saw Munich (which is undefended, but the axe is now in range) and is thinking about wardec. Not sure if he could see it through the jungle until now. His warrior was NEE of the city when I played last turn, he definitely could see it from there

Well I got the turn right after posting this, and Tarkeel actually suggested open borders. Which I accepted, no issues with him scouting me for now
The barb axe moved in a way which allowed me to get the settler in position. I believe CtH changes stop it from attacking this turn (settler protected by a military unit - but even if it can attack, it's across river onto a hill, it should be fine.... right?). Next turn I will have the city defended by an axe and an archer. So should be safe

Now that defences are set up, the axe is annoying me by not coming in and attacking the city
I want it dead, so that I don't have to worry about it any more. But it needs to get out of the jungle, come swinging, and die attacking an archer on a hill
Tempted to go straight into more settlers, but think I have to build a worker out of each of the first two cities (in Berlin after the library), so that I can start clearing the jungle, as well as more units. I'm scouting Cornflakes, and he has a fair few phalanxes and axes, definitely more than 2 axes and an archer I have. As it stands he seems to be focusing on barb defence more than on attacking someone, but you never know when that changes

T50 demos
Cornflakes is the early leader, he went for Monarchy first and is running HR + Serfdom (spiritual power), which lets him make bigger cities and have extra benefits from farms, while everyone else has to run Slavery. He also has two wine source at the capital, and that does synergise with his Gandhi pick / desire to go for early Monarchy

Instead of attacking the city, the barb axe pillaged my road on the horse tile. It is shockingly rude

Turn 40 - Turn 52
And thanks for posting the Turn 50 Demographics screen. It is interesting to see how this compares to how things usually are on Turn 100 in an Ancient Era game, because Civ IV think that you are on Turn 100, in a way.
Participat ed in: Pitboss 40 (lurked by Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 45 (lurked by Charriu and chumchu), Pitboss 63 (replaced Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 66, Pitboss 69, Pitboss 74, Pitboss 78 (lurked by GT), Pitboss 79 (lurking Giraflorens), Pitboss 81 (lurking giraflorens),
Participat ing in: Pitboss 83 (lurking Krill),
Criticism welcome!

Thanks for chronicling this struggle!
Found Scooter's land to my west
Metal Casting finished, and after some thought I clicked on Monarchy next, with intention to get to Feudalism, not only for safety, but also because I might want to switch to Vassalage along with HR (not 100% decided yet if I want to bulb anything with scientists - if I do, I cannot research Civil Service, and if Bureacracy is unavailable, Vassalage is the next best option). Currency and Calendar were both considerations as well, but don't think I need them just yet, and Monarchy is on my beeline, so the most flexible option right now
Safety is paramount though. I marked some possible city locations after the two currently planned, all of them have major concerns
* Orange has two weak food sources, but is on flatland and too close to Scooter
* Blue is on flatland and has no food resources. There's just none in the area, a city here would be high investment and live off grassland farms once jungle is cleared. Probably ok to let Cornflakes have this - this city would be ok with Serfdom, not sure it's worth the effort without
* Purple has a rare pre-Calendar luxury, but weak food. And, again, flatland
I have to also consider the hill NW of the bigs, but that feels like advancing too much towards Cornflakes. I will need serious prep if I want to settle there
I'm getting a chariot out of Berlin after the settler to help with scouting NW (although possibly after a missionary as well, iron city will need border pop asap, can't wait for a random spread there); a galley out of Hamburg will scout SE, unless it is needed for seafood defence at the coastal city

I am at war with Scooter
He is trying for an ambitious plant which would invalidate my iron city, so I cannot allow it. I had to declare this turn so that I don't get knocked out of his borders upon declaration
Hopefully he backs out of it and we can go back to peace
