Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[SPOILERS] Lurkers Thread - Well someone has to do it

Having Copper in a well-connected empire will allow Ilios to spam strength 4 warriors everywhere. He's not prioritizing Hawks, though, so may be caught unawares, and lacking the required numbers on defense.

What are his enemies going to bring to the party?

Uberfish's hunters are expensive, and have a penalty to attack cities. Also, I don't think they can pillage. On the other hand, scouting hawks will be very useful - and with uberfish following Ilios in the turn order, he could provide everyone with an up-to-date state of affairs in Malakim lands.

In fact, the turn order will really benefit the Coalition of the Willing - after Ilios' turn, Uberfish will scout with hunters, Calabim will follow next and strategize; everyone else will most likely follow their lead.

Everyone else is looking to send warriors, non-Copper in most cases. Most warriors will be unpromoted as well, I expect. Hmm... this can become a bloodbath. Any time someone tries to pillage an improvement on open ground, it's an invitation for Ilios to counter-attack. If he can get chariots in play, that could be lethal (Chariots will quickly pick up XP, healing should be quick in cities with medics around, and the advantages will snowball).

Also, having half a dozen warriors wandering around in enemy territory for several turns will be costly in upkeep. It's an expensive proposition for the coalition, and yes, the biggest winner will be whoever commits the least (so, Amelia?).

---

So, for now, things to watch are:

Will Ilios notice the military build-up of other leaders? Or gain advance warning of the attack from the shift in diplomatic tone?

Will Ilios' tech path bring some better units onto the field in time for the attack? Chariots or catapults could do the trick here - basically, anything that weakens stacks and allows him to counter-attack out of his cities.

Will Sciz be still standing, and willing to help Ilios out, or at least hinder Mist & uberfish's movements in his area?

Will the coalition stand strong and organized, or will it be a half-hearted attempt at best?

Personally I cannot see this working at all.

Why why why do the Vampires want to do anything at all before they get to vampires?? Bob messed around with a war on the Hippus and now Darrell/Sunrise want to send strength 3 warriors to fight strength 4 warriors when they could just use those hammers and coins to tech to Vampires quicker...

Vampires are soooo good - I don't understand why any calabim player would want to start fighting before them? huh

Not only that but the Malakim ALWAYS tech well at the start and get a big score lead due to extra commerce on desert tiles and being CRE for the land points.

Amelia has got it right in staying out of this. Wait until you have your civ's golden time and act during that...

Because leaving PB alone in Game1 allowed him to become far too strong for the 'sooooo good' Vampires.

But how did they solve the PB problem by attacking the Hippus? huh

In fairness, consider what they got from that war to what it cost them.

The whole Hippus action was of course counterproductive. But darrelj+sunrise don't attack a trailing Civ to get little in return here but the sole Leader who might transform into a PB-esque monster if not slowed down.

Reading all the threads, it's easy to come up with the right course of action. When you're playing the game and just guessing at the other players' motives and intentions, it's substantially more difficult.

The problem with waiting for vampires before you fight, is that you have to survive until the vampires appear (with the other players possibly conspiring to ensure that doesn't happen). We had a neighbor with good military traits, and Bob issued him an ultimatum: "Explore this lair, and it's war". Should we have backed down, and let the other players know we could be pushed around?

In retrospect, we definitely should have addressed the PB problem early, probably right after the Hippus non-war. But he was far away, and we were still worried about Selrahc and his Priests of Winter.

On topic for this game: I think it's a good idea for the vampires to organize a gang-bang. While everyone is sending their troops after Ilios, the vamps can keep teching. I don't think a small expeditionary force will crash their economy. Of course, it may not be able to do much damage to Ilios, either.

Not really a PBEM 1 spoiler, but just in case:
Yeah, I kept expecting PB to slow down after he was done founding cities, and it didn't happen, and that was with full knowledge.

Now this I agree with 100%. I don't expect them to hurt Ilios much, but they're distracting everyone. And that's what matters.

Nah thats the problem if you use ultimati. You have to follow them even if they hurt you.

You couldn't take him alone while having the Winterking at your northern border. At least not without a great work on Diplo which didn't happen.

BTW whats up with the game?

Surprising, Amelia seems to be on board with the coalition. She delayed quite a few turns though I think...

On the other hand, Ilios just said he's delaying his path to Priesthood a bit.
