I wasn't quite sure how it worked until I saw it in action myself.
Each team has two vans of six people. The van will drop off the runner at an exchange point and then drive ahead to the next exchange point while the runner is running his or her leg. Then at the next exchange we get the next runner up to the hand off point, and once the exchange happens get the runner who just finished into the van and drive off again to the next exchange.
The break happens once we cycle through our sixth person - we go to the first person in the next van and then they get to go through all their runners. Which means we have however long it takes them to go through all their runners to get some food, shower (if possible), and try to get an hour or two of sleep before they finish their legs and we are up again.
The first rest was the best one: we finished in downtown Portland and one of our van lived just a mile from there. Ordered pasta takeout, crashed at his place for a couple hours of sleep, and then drove on to St Helens for the second legs. That's when it got a bit crazy. First there was a fire in St Helens that closed the highway and diverted the course (someone in the first van had to run an extra two miles) and caused a ton of congestion. Second, once we left the main highway and onto the back roads there was constant congestion. There would be a line of vans waiting to get into the exchange point and usually we'd have to send the runner on ahead once we stopped to make sure he got to the relay by the time the previous runner made it. On most occasions we pulled it off, but not getting to stop and stretch your legs or make a sandwich / change out of sweaty clothes was a big loss.
Total time for our team was a little over 27 hours. I was happy with how I ran my legs of the race. I ran one of the hardest ones in the race at St Helens in the middle of the night - lots of steep hills but I kept a 8 min/mile pace and passed lots of people. My last leg was short and mostly downhill, so I went as hard as I could and did those 4 miles in under a 7/min mile pace. Haven't run that fast in a while, so it was nice to accomplish. After that it was cheering on the team, and when we got to the beach we got some beers, found a brew pub and had burgers, then slept all of the 2 hour drive home.
I am exhausted

So I'll play my turn tomorrow
