[Spoilers PB23] Old Harry's attempt at civilizing AdrienIer

Argh Elum (ind/imp) founded this turn. I'll post a screenshot of Caledorn's southern lands next turn, long story short he has ivory.

I've just played both turns, and we have a second city !

And here's the promised pic of Caledorn's land :

Next turn we start a worker in Qunum, to be whipped and overflowed into an other worker, and next is probably a settler (although a warrior first to regrow is possible). Question is, can we get ourselves a religion for city site 6 ? It has lots of resources in the second ring, and else we'll need to chop a barrack here, being agg.

Did you beat the other EXPs? cool

I felt like early on we wanted to build Settlers in Lobambus and Workers in Qunum, where there are more hammers available to get the EXP bonus, but wherever there is a whip available Workers are good.

Is the worker chopping into the Qunum Worker or roading or moving to improve the pigs?

For site 6 the city can work the Oasis until a barracks pops the borders without losing too much compared to an earlier border pop, but getting a religion in there would be useful. Who else do you think is going for religion?

Yeah we're second to found a second city (founding t27), Grimace (Exp/org) founded turn 28 and that's all for now.

For now the worker has just arrived on the hill, I'm keeping the options open, but with another worker coming soon there are many good options. Improving the pig quickly is probably the best idea, so it's going to be either roading or directly going for the bacon because worker n°2 will be whipped not chopped.

If I were caledorn I'd go for one of the early ones, he's just one tech away from them and it's on the road to rathaus. Agent has other ways to culture with aggressive Ikhandas, not sure about the rest.

I went for roading, it felt better (2 turn road then the worker can go straight for the pig and pasture it in the same turn), the new worker will road the tile west of Qunum and then chop the forested hill. There's a fish south of the new city for a future spot that needs to be scouted.

We met Whosit, seeing directly into his second city. I whipped the worker in Qunum, overflow is going into another worker then we slowbuild a scout to regrow, 5 turns later we get a chop into the worker and we're good on workers for now. I've been toying with the idea of an oracle play, not sure how good it would be and how fast we could get there. I'll make some real tests today, I promise wink

Now about Krill's map, from what I can see there are mountain passes between players (I don't think you can get from Caledorn's land to Whosit's without going through the path I took) and our resource placement as well as the resources in Caledorn's southern lands are not easy to dotmap. I don't know if it's also the case with other teams but having our coppers in the safe part of the land has made us take strong decisions : hook the copper early or settle for the contested sites ? We went for the best sites early because there was no good 2nd city with copper in first ring.
I'll repeat myself there and say that this is a very well drawn map.

Why the scout rather than a warrior? What's the build queue in the second city going to be? And would an Oracle help or hinder the Praeting of a neighbour?

I think it's probably still too early to comment on the balance of the map, but if you like your maps annoying with lots of fiddly little dotmap decisions then I guess it does the job tongue. I'll be interested to see how naval warfare pans out - do we have a neighbour across the water to the NW that the Praets can visit?

I went for a scout because I want to scout the SW now that we've seen a fish there it might be worth settling as 4th or 5th city, and I don't believe we need another warrior for now. But maybe I'll go warrior anyway, we already have enough city sites for now, it'll all depend on my afternoon sims. After the warrior is done in Lobambus it's going to be time for the second settler probably.

I don't see Oracling something as a way to help the attack of a neighbor, the likely choices are MC (even though it's cheaper now IIRC) monarchy or COL (maths if we're really behind in the upper tree) and none of those are really necessary for that. Would a praet attack be better supported by catas ? Maybe, but it delays it. Overall I think we have enough land to ourselves so that we don't need to take any from our neighbors right now. We should expand fast and when we get out of good land to expand into we'll reconsider.

Anyway this is the sandbox with next turn's situation. I'll start simming now.

First test, probably optimisable, going for religion. Of course if we go for polytheism there's no need to chop a barrack in site 6, but there wasn't much else I could do. A warrior maybe ?

More tests to come.

Edit : Here's one going pottery-AH after agri, and chopping the hill SW of Qunum before farming the corn :

I like this one !

Last thing, I tried playing in windowed mode but I can't take screenshots somehow. So I reverted to fullscreen, not sure what's wrong.

In windowed mode if the playing area is off the edge of the screen screenies won't take - does that fix it?

Even if you do get a religion I'd want a barracks in Cumae - you'll be able to produce a lot of military from that city smile.

I logged in to muck about with the flying camera a bit - I wondered why you carried on east with the scout though?

Meeting Whosit will be valuable for known tech bonus eventually, but right now I'd want to know whats to your north and south... It looks a bit too small for there to be another civ directly north/south of you, but it could be offset slightly.

Nice work on trying three different approaches hatsoff, but its kind of hard to compare what you've done in the three runs - the cap and Antium are a different size each time and I can't tell how many workers and warriors you've got in play or how often you whipped. Four cities by t48 seems good to me, but I bet that we can tune it even tighter whip - can you do a screenshot every end of turn for your favourite run through, trying to highlight (with ctrl-S) anything you think is important. Don't worry if you miss a turn here and there, but I bet we could shave another turn or two off those settling dates. (In fact I bet you shave a turn or two off just running through it again!) I know its a lot of work, but to make it really pay off we need to analyze what you've done.
