Changed my mind regarding printing press. Instead I'm going for getting into representation and free market before my golden age ends. (This requires constitution, feudalism, guilds, banking, economics.) I think from a rough estimate that it's possible to get those techs in 10 turns, even though a few of them are quite expensive. The raw benefits of rep and free market should each be greater than the benefit of PP, and both are on the way to corporation which gives even more commerce than free market. The argument for PP is that it's on the way to important stuff like steam power and rifling... but I need banking for those two anyway, so free market and corp aren't far out of the way. And then once you have free market you just need constitution for corp...
Another benefit of doing these techs first is I will unlock knights as a good build in my HE city, and grocer for my capital. A bank there will eventually have some value too, and it will have even more value if I pop a prophet (which is something like 8%, in 3 turns).
Ultimately though I don't feel in a big hurry to reach techs like rifling; I would rather pump up my economy first, as this is pretty much the first time all game I haven't been at war or needing to be afraid of war. I think I have a big enough leftover force from the HAK war that it would be dumb to attack me, and as far as I know all my neighbors think well of me.
Edit: and I am going constitution first because then I can revolt immediately and revolt again at the end of the GA, instead of just once at the end.

This is probably out of the blue, but it's cool (to me) to see you playing without Novice for the first time in a while here. Novice's affinity for micro plans sometimes makes the game get lost in sims and stats, but your updates are much more high level and strategic. I like them.
How many beakers are you behind the leaders?

Huh... I mean, I played PBEM23 and PBEM29 with novice, but after that I played PB7, PBEM39, PBEM43, PBEM47, PB10, PBEM50, PBEM56, and PB16 without him. Did you miss all of those?
I'll have to check about the techs. I can still only tell for a few players, but Mackoti is among them and due to liberalism he is surely one of the tech leaders at this point.
Update to my last post btw, I am considering stopping at mercantilism instead of free market. I think that given rep/caste it's going to be comparable in commerce and also provide gpp.

OK, to answer your question, Ceiliazul:
I am up Nationalism and part of Constitution on Mackoti, totalling 7112 beakers.
Mackoti is up Priesthood, Feudalism, Guilds, Music, Liberalism, Alphabet, Printing Press, Engineering, and Gunpowder, totalling 16234 beakers. (He also has an unknown amount of overflow from Gunpowder which is going towards chemistry.)
He is also up about 300 gold.
In total he is ahead by about 9500 beakers, which is about 18 turns of non-GA research for me. He also has 18.xx% of world population compared to my 14.xx%. It's not close.
As for the other players, I suspect that Gawdzak is the biggest and most advanced other contender and I don't know what techs he has. Probably it's a lot closer between me and him, but with him still ahead on paper.

Bad news: Mackoti hasn't gone into 18 turns of anarchy.
Good news: Got representation and it's worth 120bpt just by itself, more once I switched some population around to their optimal tasks.
Weird news: Donovan Zoi gifted me two workers that he had next to my "island" city and apparently didn't need anymore. I'll take them as appreciation for the rice gift I've been sending him unsolicited for a while now. I might have deleted them if there wasn't a real history of me being nice to him here. Speaking of which, I'm planning to help out with the mercy killing and invade him next turn, aiming to take 1-2 cities that are really close to me. Unfortunately I got stuck behind him in the turn timer since he played fairly early this turn. His pike can see my troops next time he logs in; I wonder how he will feel about it.

He may wish he'd kept the receipt on those workers so he could arrange a return. Too bad this is the Internet. Terrible customer service is the norm!

Yup. Of course, it's not like he would be able to do anything with them, but indeed he might regret giving them to me rather than deleting them. I don't know, I don't think I've hurt his game at all; I only attacked when he was down to the last 3 cities anyway. Different people take attacks like that in different ways.

Is Jojo going to need to build a fort and bring over a combat capable boat to get rid of that thing? I'm assuming that the WB is blocking use of that tile. The city should be renamed "Tired of his Rowboat".

I have suggested building work boats to block tiles on a couple of occasions...
