You all got pretty screwed Rome, sorry. Nice land, just not enough of it. I'm not sure your trickle-attack opening was the best idea, and maybe your thread will illuminate, but I don't fault you guys otherwise.

I will reply here to plako's post from the tech thread, since my reply has no technical merit. smile

plako Wrote:Now I am not sure what to do. I think I've earned the position where I am towards Xenu border, but Xenu inviting attackers has made the legitimacy of my attack questionable. I have been preparing to take advantage of the well known major attack from SevenSpirits for some time and now, when opportunity finally arrives, I feel dirty using it. Either I'll be accused of taking freebies or I leave Sevenspirits and Lord Parkin to collect the prices. What would be the point in this game after that?

Well I tried to stop this exactly because, like you say, victory feels hollow if it's just handed to you by a helpful opponent. But since the opportunity is there, as the main injured party I encourage you to take it. However note that I am also your neighbor who has suffered from xenu's terrible aggression all game and from all the native american troops we have had to slay this game I consider those lands my own. So advance farther and I will not guarantee the safety of those units. wink

Quote:btw. I don't think Xenu has done me much of a favor here. I don't want to reveal everything in case this game goes on, but Xenu has handled his defenses alright and reacted to threats I've presented. There hasn't been cheap prizes to collect. Even now after withdrawing few defenders, the city isn't defenseless and he still has 1 turn to fill it up so I might not even have enough to take it.

I also urge everyone to think how would they handle defenses, when there is border with a large stack of units coming in versus a border without no visible troops?

You say that, but I've had city visibility of him for a long time, and I dispute your opinion. He's had 10-20 units in his border city with us for a long time, and 1-3 units in the border city with you in the same timeframe. During this long timeframe, which army was actually there to threaten him? Yours was once. Ours was never.

Then consider kind of troops. You have a solely mounted army which could easily be stopped by a half-dozen more archers/spears. We have a slow-mover army which is completely unfazed by his city defenders. This very turn we lost only a couple units to kill 25. In other words xenu could have allocated any number of units to Cahokia that were in the city we attacked, and it would make absolutely no difference in his losing that city, but easily hold strong against you. Do I criticize this move? Nope - there is no one right answer of what to do when defeat is inevitable, and I am surely biased. I wish he'd played differently but it's his empire to defend as he thinks best. But I don't believe for one second it wasn't in your favor.

If you are curious here is how I would defend as X-Com with his army from before this turn. Spread it out among all border cities, enough to prevent any of them from falling without cats (necessitating a slower assault) or very expensive losses. This would provide just as much defense against our own attack, not cost so many units for nothing, and allow him to successfully defend all other cities. Meanwhile whip lots of horse archers. By the time we can advance to the second target he will have sufficient of them to flank away our catapults, and then he can hole up with protective archers. Also build catapults and if we split up stacks too much he can take them out. Of course now it's too late as he just lost most of his units.

Xenu definately could have done better in defense than he did.

Actually based on your description he did do you a big favor granting you free experience and GG points wink.

Yup. smile If it weren't for the fact that there are other players nearby it would be cause for much celebration.

Thanks for the tactics pointers. This is my second MP game ever, first being PBEM29g and I wasn't involved in the conflict part of that game. So that being said I don't have a lot of MP war experience and I'm sure I could have done a lot better. I knew the city would fall and I'd be gutted, I just thought I could hold it another turn. It appears I didn't kill nearly as many catapults as I expected to. If there's a next time I'll think about playing it differently.

I packed my army into that city because I thought I'd hold it for one more turn, delaying the inevitable by one more turn. It didn't work out. I've reinforced everywhere else I could so good luck to you guys, maybe the AI will handle my defenses more competently than I did. At least you'll be happy that the AI will spread out troops everywhere instead of focusing on the point of attack. bang And this way you won't be capturing only size one cities. Seriously, enjoy the rest of the game. I know a lot of the reason it isn't fun is because of the drama involved and I'm part of the problem, not the solution. And as long as I'm playing with Seven I'm going to keep being part of the problem so it's best to go now. It won't matter if it's me or the AI in control of an empire in its death throes and it saves me from having to put up with any more accusations or verbal abuse, and responding in kind.

Again, I apologize to anyone I offended with my reaction to the BASELESS accusations of cheating, but I will not apologize to Seven under any circumstances unless you can understand why calling someone a cheater in public is beyond tasteless when they have not cheated. My tactics are disputable, I'm green, get over it. But I'm not a cheat. You should be more careful with the words you use, it make you look foolish as well.

GG.

Seeing as how the game will be ending somewhat soonish....with myself playing a little while longer, plako too, and probably a good number of others continuing just because and only with probably a few dropping to AI.....

I say just quit the peaceful expanding and toss your whole army at someone for a bloody last stand.

lol You have a point: it's last hurrah time.

@Lewwyn- if you want a last hurrah that's a bloody fight, then south probably isn't the way to go. i've got Moogle's army tied up in the west of his empire. I was going to pitch that there were developed cities that were easy pickings to your southeast, and you were free to pick them up if you wanted. But if it's last hurrah time then I'm thinking it's time to waste my army on Moogle's catapults.
