The former is definitely the case for this game, the latter seems only to have been mentioned in passing once or twice.

Well, Plako is making the map, and he said it's disabled, so I'm assuming that's the case. I'll make sure, though.
Btw, since you've done team games before, do you know how gpp works? Do we all share the same gpp counter, or do we each get a separate counter?

You have separate GPP counters, but they affect each other. When one of you gets a great person, your threshold goes up by the normal amount (e.g. 100 -> 200 on normal speed). But your teammates' thresholds also go up - though by half the normal amount (e.g. 100 -> 150).
So on normal speed, if one civ generates the first three great people, then the new threshold for the next great person will be 400 for that civ, and 250 for the other two civs. If one of those two civs generates the next great person, then the new thresholds will be 450/350/300. And so on.
Hope that clarifies matters.

I just got your picks i.e.
Victoria (fin/imp) of China
Gandhi (spi/phi) of Ottomans
Bismarck (exp/ind) of India
Where do you want to position them?

So first question do we want the Fin Civ by the rivers? IE 2-1? I think 2-1
The exp, Ind civ by the marble or the forests? I think forests 2-2
leave us SPI/Phi at 2-3, which by the way if we plant 1 east of the incense gives us 4 food resources in the capital. That will be a tremendous GP farm.
So I think that's how we should go.
2-1 : Fin/Imp China - lots of rivers.
2-2 : Exp/Ind India - Lots of forests.
2-3 : Spi/Phi Ottoman - awesome food GP farm.
