How to run Civ on Wine (for Macs)

(July 9th, 2016, 21:38)DMOC Wrote: Unfortunately, actually trying to play a game (this time, again the Earth 18 civs scenario) results in an error.

Oh, that.

I get that error 1/4 to 1/3 of the time on PlayonMac, whether loading a non-modded PBEM save (PBEM71) or trying to connect to a RtR Pitboss (PB 34). What I do is to reload Civ or Steam and try until it works. Since I can usually get in after max 2-3 tries, and it doesn't crash the Pitboss server, I've just stuck with it.

Quote:Out of curiosity ipecac, did you use PlayOnMac?

When I first started the thread I used a wineskin which worked great for a year plus, but my hard disk crashed and then I switched to PlayonMac. I didn't have this crashing error with wineskin but wineskin is a bit more involved to set up so I've stuck with PlayonMac.

It looks OK to me. There's an assets directory, and an "RtR Mod 2.0.7.4.ini" file, plus a backup for it.

ipecac:

I did some further testing and found this:

1. After restarting the game and reloading RtR each time, after four attempts, I still am unable to play the Earth 18 Civs scenario.

2. Fortunately, I decided to try something different, a "Play Now" game rather than a pre-set scenario. My first effort failed, but my second one succeeded. I chose Elizabeth on a Pangea map and the different effects of Financial are visible. The cottage only has 2c, and the lake here has 3c, as expected.

Zalson, thanks for the comments. I will try some of your suggestions shortly.

Hello, does the RtR-Mod changes the maximal player number? If yes, you could create&play games with the mod but can not load szenario files the Worldbuilder files (CivBeyondSwordWBSave) does not contain enough entries.

You can extend the WB-Saves in a texteditor with the missing entries to made the saves loadable.

Yes, it does. That's probably DMOC's problem.

In particular, what you need to do is add the blank player slots to the end of both player lists. If you save a regular game as a worldbuilder file and open it in a text editor, you'll see what we're talking about. Should be able to cut and paste the last few entries into the worldbuilder saves for your scenario without changing anything material in the scenario.

You might need to delete the copy of the mod in your 'my games' folder.

I'm guessing this is your problem. If you can load RtR and play a new game with no problem but are unable to load BTS scenarios while running RtR it's probably because of the missing player slots that RtR saves expect. The same thing would happen on Windows. The test for this theory is as Ramkhamhaeng and Mardoc say, just add the missing player slots to a BTS scenario and see if it works when running RtR. Easiest way to do that is to generate a world builder save in RtR and copy the missing team18-team39 data into your BTS scenario world builder file.

Btw, if some modders read here... I've fixed this WB-issue in a Mod, but unfortunately the modified WB parser contains multiple changes and can not simply copied to other Mods.

I could run the 34 civ AI survivor game no problem in wineskin.

EDIT: I do have a copy of the 2.0.7.4 Krill mod in both base civ4 and civ4 BTS folders. Not sure if it makes a difference.

Yes, this turned out to be the right fix. Thanks to everyone who mentioned this.

I went ahead and started that massive 34-player AI Survivor Spinoff. It looks like it's working so far:

Whew! So once I get a free weekend, I'll be able to sim that out and observe. goodjob

The last step is for me to get this to work for Pitboss games. When I open up Multiplayer, I get the following screen, which shows that the "Direct IP" option I need for Pitboss is missing.

I believe Zalson mentioned in another thread that we need to downgrade the version of Civ to get Direct IP working:

Quote:Make sure that you're using the "BETA/Original Release" version of Civ4 BTS to ensure you can create a Direct IP connnection. Instructions here: http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/...d-on-Steam. Original release will load quickly.

I'm using the most recent version, so I'll go ahead and downgrade, and report back.
