Checking the logs:
We got the religion! And in an amazing die roll, His Noodly Appendage touched the city of Spaghetti! Is this just coincidence? You decide.
This means that Spaghetti's borders will actually pop next turn. Kuro might be a little annoyed that they'll have nowhere to move their axe to scout without declaring war.
But that might be the least of their problems.
KuroBaII still have a ton of hammers in their capital. And with sailing researched this early, what else could it be? I'm pretty sure they narrowly missed the Lighthouse!! Judging by the scores, it was Retep who got it. Well, that's the thing about all-in plays isn't it? It sucks when you lose out. This is great for us, it means we don't have to worry about open borders or a fast-teching neighbor.
We got graphs on Oxy:
Oxy is doing well, and running extremely light on military. It would be kind of fun to puzzle out he started, but I don't think there's anything to be gained for it. He did go worker first, and got a faster food start than we did though.

Lurker questions:
1. If Kuro has sailing, and I don't, and we have open borders with a defogged coast pathway, he gets trade routes to me, and I don't get them to him, correct?
2. If no, and if I open borders on turn 70 (for example) and I finish sailing at the end of the turn, do I get trade routes for that turn? Basically I'm asking if there's any benefit to getting open borders on turn 70 vs turn 71, if I'm going to get sailing on turn 70.

1. If the coast pathway is defogged by him, sure. You won't get a trade route to him without Sailing or without a defogged coast pathway.
2. No, you don't get trade routes for the turn that you get Sailing. Getting Sailing would mean that your commerce (=> beakers) has been calculated for that turn, and thus you would not get any benefit from additional trade routes.
Also, you were recently at war so most likely your trade routes will be useless anyway. Trade routes recover at a rate of 3% (of base) per turn while at peace.

Ah, thanks for the answers. The article I read wasn't obvious on that. So the multiplier bonus for a foreign trade route starts at 0%, and rises by 3% for each turn of peace up to 150%.
Another question: religions can spread between civs without open borders, if a potential trade route exists, right? Can a religion spread to Kuro if he has sailing and a defogged coastal path, but I don't?
I've read that the chance modifiers for religion spread are distance to the holy city and whether there's a shrine. Can I know or estimate what the exact probabilities are?

Hey, his state of inebriation doesn't imply that his writings are actually wrong. That's a fallacy right there!
I realized after playing last turn that it was as good a time as any to revolt to Pastafarianism, with Spaghetti not productive yet. Other than that, this turn was uneventful. Three workers are busy improving Spaghetti, the top priority in the empire right now.
KuroBaII have passed us in post count, as they presumably cry about all that fail gold! Their power is going up some more, and they have two axes we see, the scouting one and one more at home. It's unclear if they envision a military effort, or if they're just keeping up with the Jones'.
Since trade routes aren't going to be worth much for a while anyway, it's not clear whether opening borders is a good idea. On the one hand it's a display of good will, but on the other hand, having their axe wandering around our south borders where we may have workers and settlers could be a big headache. And speaking of trade routes:
Somehow we have a connection with Kurumi, even though we haven't defogged a path to him. Someone can correct me if my logic wrong but I think this means:
1. He has defogged a path to us.
2. Kuro must not have defogged a coastal path to us. If he had, we'd see his resources because he'd have a potential trade path with us.
I think what is probably happening is that Kurumi has a city hooked up to this river:
Anyway he seems to have no copper hooked up, but with horse (which I had guessed) and ivory. WE are banned in this game but the early happiness would still be extremely nice.

True, I can't say for certain if he was drunk at the time he wrote his letter to the Kansas Board of Education.
Obviously you need to build privateers this game

Haha, yeah, and I wonder if they reduce the chance of global warming?

The path is traced from the holy city to the destination city. If your city doesn't have a path to his city, even if his city has a path to you, it won't spread.

Interesting. This has all been very opaque to me before. I appreciate the info very much.
It's another reason to prioritize Sailing and scouting to the south then, I guess. (For foreign spreads and eventual shrine income.)
