Who shall lead us to Victory!!!

I'm sorry I didn't wait to get a direct assent from each of you; I would have preferred to but I didn't want to delay the pick any further. Thank you all for the unique and detailed perspectives you've offered so far on the picks; I think they've not only informed our choice in this regard but also given us broader insight into how we might proceed through the early part of the game no matter our picks. Good work, team!

Thats not competition wink

But seriously: I think this pick is bad by them. You essentially have only 4 players. With one having IND, you actually don't want to pick IND as well. You can of course, but you weaken both of your picks instead of taking stronger ones (for you as well as for denial-purposes). Honestly, I would think that they either didn't talk about what to do if an IND-leader is picked before them (and that they try for the early wonders) or that they did, but didn't care (indicating imo more of a Pyramids-strategy than a SH, Oracle one).

Anyhow, next pick back to us should be our first civ. If available, I'd still take Sumeria. Even more strongly suggesting that now, as we will go down the religious path anyhow, so having the Courthouses for a horizontal-civ already at the point we will research anyway is just godly. You can get SH -> Oracle (take MC) -> build Courthouses and Forges. And that all while the other civ is supplying you with settlers, so you just have to get the workers.

HC is a great choice but then again I don't subscribe to the theory it weakens both picks. All it means is there will be competition for early wonders. Starting techs chosen might indicate possible wonder targets (i.e. they choose Mysticism..yeah Stonehenge being telegraphed) although optimal play would be to take techs needed to improve starting land. Having said that, I agree with your reasoning that they are probably going Mids..very common to try and split the early wonders..no one wants one team to get Stonehenge/Oracle/Colossus AND Mids.

Sumeria seems to be the logical pick given the desire to go Stonehenge and get a religion (and yes, Oracle after that would be great if it can be pulled off).
Global lurker smile ; played in Civ VI PBEM 4, 5, 15; DL suboptimal Civ VI PBEM 17

Egypt, then? What's our preference if it's gone?

Yes, Egypt would be my pick as well. Look what our team is doing with Stonehenge/Egypt in the demogame...
If it's gone... not sure...

Which demogame?

dito

If Egypt and Sumaria are gone there are Ottomans, Babylon and France left for Agri/Wheel, so unless someone loves one of those three I think we should take our pick of the Fish/Mine civs, leaving the dregs for the others:
Rome (Praet, Forum)
England (Redcoat, Stock ex)
Carthage (Numidian Cav, Cothon)
Portugal (Carrack, Feitoria)

I'd say Portugal are useless on a lakes map, I've no idea if Numidian Cav are any good, so pick from Rome and England...

You have to sort out with HAK if you actually go for SH. If you do, you might want to start with Mining, Myst, Agri, Fishing. You would give up Wheel in that case (=lose a few beakers) but would be closer to SH which might be important, in case RMOG actually does want to race you to it.

Civs to get it:

Maya - Myst - Mining - Holkan (Spear) - Ball Court (Colosseum)
Korea - Myst - Mining - Hwacha (Catapult) - Seowon (University)

Dutch - Fishing - Agri - East India (Galleon) - Dike (Levee)
Native A. - Fishing - Agri - Dog Soldier (Axe) - Totem Pole (Monument)
America - Fishing - Agri - Seal (Marine) - Mall (Supermarket)

or

China - Agri - Mining - Cho-Ko-Nu (X-Bow) - Pavillion (Theater)
Spain - Fishing - Myst - Conquista (Cuirassier) - Citadel (Castle)

I can see China and Spain, but mostly for the Cho-Ko-Nu. Alternatively Maya (Fin-civ) + Native America could be nice. Totem Poles will produce you great LBs for defence in the mid to mid-late game. And with Dog Soldier and Holkan you can produce units as soon as you have BW, without the need to hook up copper or settle for it. Ball Court also might be ok, depending on the amount of happy that is around.
