So here comes the intro text. smile

Personal stuff:
I'm a 23-year-old university student from Helsinki, Finland. I study Industrial Engineering & Management, but I have been working at two different consulting companies since January and therefore my studies will truly continue again in September. Now I am enjoying a vacation that I have waited for a long long time.jive

RB:
I have followed the games here already for more than a year. However, due to my hectic RL, participating in games has not been an option until now. I registered here also a while back, but since the players here are so good, it is difficult to give any value-adding comments and I have therefore been only a silent lurker. Additionally, I am always totally spoiled when I follow games. I became more active also because I desperately wanted to lurk the ISDG. I have been spamming couple of team members with PMs and I guess I keep disturbing them in the coming weeks and months as well..

Civ experience:
I have always enjoyed multiplayer games and don't enjoy fighting with AIs that much. However, due to real life realities I have never played anything but single player. In my last games I have won Emperor pretty comfortably, and couple of Deity games (but under favorable settings/map), so I do not know what my level really is. I enjoy playing starts pretty carefully, but do not have much late game experience, since as soon as the win is clear I tend to skip additional warring or optimizing economy and just hit enter until the game is over. So I won't have much to add when we talk about corporations or air warfare..

This game:
I am happy to join Team Gillette and I hope that you don't mind my dumb comments! I will be travelling couple of weeks in July and August so my level of presence will vary a bit. Btw, I also enjoy our picks a lot. Pacal will definitely boost our economy and I am looking forward to seeing how the Viking UB & UU can be leveraged in this game! This will be fun!

Welcome! Don't worry about "dumb comments." I, and I believe the rest of the team as well, appreciate all comers. Besides, if you can beat Diety, you are probably better than me anyways.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

This was what hooked me.

So it did work! lol

Welcome, Zalson. Check out the various threads, especially the C&D where Cyneheard is explaining the mysteries of the dark arts. smile

Have we divvied up game roles yet? I don't have BTS but I do have some decent CIV experience (I played incompetently in a few RB events when civ came out). I'd like to volunteer for the diplomatic corps and state department.

With the state dept, we would try to anticipate what other players will do based on their situation in game and observable evidence (c&d aggregation/map analysis).

This is the place to go to volunteer to participate with diplo - that'll be our diplo thread. It'll be a bit quiet for a couple weeks probably, but we'll definitely have work to do once we start making contacts.

I think our "state dept" as you describe it is what we plan to do in our metagaming thread here: http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5938

So if that's your thing too, that's a great place to get started. smile

Yeah. I saw both of these after my wonderful post. Will make my contributions there.

This seems to be as good a place as any to say that I will be out for the next month. Fare well, Team Gillette, as I always stop shaving while on vacation.

I know my enormous contribution will be deeply, deeply missed...
