[SPOILERS] Serdoas and Nobles Thread with a little bit of Gaspar sprinkled in

I'm pretty sure I used this tactic when I was emotionally invested in the games, early on when I started playing here. The longer I played - and more often was in a potential winning position - the less understandably was this tactic to me. I don't care if it is closer to "reality", we are playing a game and it is meant to be fun. Losing inherently isn't fun, but we all learn early on that it is not a reason to knock over the board and make it no fun for everyone. Scorched earth tactics are exactly that to me now. It's not doing anything for you, it is just a try to make the other guys game worse - and really, most of the time to make himself feel worse. I've used the same excuses as everyone else for this tactic, but in the end it's simply unfun.

I agree though that ruling it out would be more sensible than taking away options from the player. I'm not sure however if such a rule would not be circumvented by some, as most are. And when you invest a year or more into a game, just not playing with that guy again isn't helping right now. Therefore I can see why someone would try to eliminate it as a potential tactic.

Not sure what the best way really is, but at least in a game this big, I'm glad that those we will conquer can not use scorched earth as a strategy.

Btw: Possible idea how to prevent this: Have hamlets, villages, towns be restored to their former state when pillaged. Similar to how you can burn a farm but it will only take 4 turns (or less with the right civics) to rebuild it. Not sure you can store that information for every tile anywhere though - and if you can how it would affect load times.

Found CH's scout

We should win against the lion if he attacks, 1.5 for him vs 3 for us. Or is it 1 vs 2.5 because it takes the 50% he has against melee away? I think it was that way around.

I also moved the warrior out towards SE to get a better look at the land there.

Okay, interesting. We definitely want to make sure we secure the stone and gold then.

I wonder if he walked all 10 turns straight north? Or most of it at least? With the amount of tiles on this map and the number of players we should all be some ways away from each other. Even assuming we have an ocean with 4 or 5 separate continents (please no, I hate sea-combat). I'm pretty sure that we are not competing with him (or anyone) for the gold/stone site as it would make no sense that another player is that close to us. That's basically first expansion ring for us.

The game cannot be unfun for the winner, because the winner gets the land. Even if the land is pillaged down, it can be farmed and workshopped. If the game rules should ban pillaging, the rules should ban pillaging for both the defender and the attacker. popcorn

Well I don't know how many tiles are in the map. neenerneener Yes, I would expect a first ring site to not be under contention, but I don't think I was expecting to meet anyone there either.

80 x 100 is the map dimension. Toroid, though that makes no difference on maintenance with the mod.

Okay, but how many land tiles?

Not know. Though it was stated that the boats would play a role, that's one reason why I believe several continents is a fair possibility. Also there was some hint at the spacing, reading as follows:

Not very tight(PB25), but not overly spacious (PB19), somewhere at the (hopefully) sweet spot in between.

I don't know either of the games and would rather not dive into them, so I have no clue what that means. I suspect PB25 had something of around 75-100 tiles per player and PB19 had 200+? If so they would aim for around 150, which was "standard" when I left RB. With 23 players around 3500 - 4000 "land"-tiles, probably involving some lakes, given our land. That would leave around 4000 ocean-tiles. And the spacing should be around 12 tiles between players.

Actually that would be closer than I first anticipated. Oh well, that is all just guessing anyway, till someone tells me how PB25 and PB19 were spaced out.

You can get the number of land tiles from the land score info inside the game, I'll get it later.
