Leader Choice

I thought novice had a good point earlier about Darius and cost reduction. Do we know the difficulty level for this game?

My thoughts on Sury of India is that we'll be able to do everything pretty well, but nothing spetacularly well. We can do cottages well, but not as good as a financial Civ. We can do specialists well, but not as good as a PHI leader or a SPI one and we aren't in the best position to get the Mids. We can get wonders quick, but not as quick as IND.

We can probably expand faster than anyone else, though. And even though we may not be the best in something, we'll be pretty strong still.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that Sury is a pick that will work with a variety of strategies and things that can happen in the game. If we want to commit to a strategy now (like going cottages) or if we think that a certain strategy is obviously better, we can get a less "good overall" leader, but a more specialized one.

The English phrase that applies well here is "Jack of all trades, master of none." It's not a compliment.

But this things are hard to quantify in a Civ game. Every hammer that we spare with the discounted buildings means something, every turn we get by virtue of faster workers/granaries means something too. Our cottages may be worth 2 commerce instead of 3, but we'll work more with the granaries and faster settled cities. We may not be the faster wonder builders, but we may get a head start due to our speed. And there's a lot of other examples.

So, Sury may not be spectacular at anything, but he's very good at everything, not only good at it.

It's hard to explain... And I'm not that good at doing it either. But if we go for financial, it'll be hard to deviate from the wine settle -> religion plan, for example. Sury can deviate a lot and be ready for a lot of potential surprises in the fog. That's just an example, but I think it kind of represents my thoughts.

Sury is a master of the snowball. Sury of India with our micro team? Come on, that's money!

I voted for Sury. I'm not convinced it's the best choice, but I think I'll have fun with it. I love snowballing.

I must confess that I have never seen snow in my entire life, so I have no idea how to snowball...

Seriously, it's winter where I live and we reached more than 30ºC today. banghead

Nevertheless, I like Sury. Knowing you can finish a library and a granary with the hammers needed for a normal library is reassuring (and you still get some change to spare). Better to stop thinking about it, though, because I'm second guessing myself every 5 minutes or so.

So in other words, the real question is WHEN to stop thinking about it. smile
If you know what I mean.

Voted for Mansa, although I would suggest new vote after it is our turn.
