Turn 185
It seems that the concession is coming, but I still played a "quick" turn yesterday.
Overall the turn was fairly eventless. Azza continued a bit with ship harassment and Sareln has now his first Ship of the Line in Lemongrass. However, nothing truly threatening appeared and it seems that I'm allowed to keep the cities I captured and Combustion is not that far away anymore..
Based on how the discussion in our banter thread currently goes, it seems that I might not see a turn anymore.. In any case I will then post some kind of end-of-the-game overview and probably open some kind of post game discussion thread. I don't know if my opponents have fun discussing the game, but at least I can try

Thanks!
And I really could not have done this without you, Molach and others who commented during the game! My motivation to report and probably also to play focused, would surely have dropped withour regular reminders that at least somebody is actually following along. So thank you all!
Despite the fact that Viqsi has not confirmed concession I think this game can be now declared to be over: So if I manage I'll post last screenshots of my civ next turn..

I think I'm obliged to hate you now.

About to read through your thread now, but before I do, very well played. You definitely did the whole functioning economy thing a LOT better than I did. As soon as you boated Sareln I knew this game was close to being settled, since I needed a long, drawn out war between you two to catch up my economy. I'm still annoyed you managed to claim the islands between us, but having said that I don't regret focusing on getting Escapee up and running either. Just wish you could've left your island cities vulnerable, or at least that you didn't have circumnavigation.

Thanks Azza! If you manage to read through my monologue, comment freely on anything that comes to mind!
And yeah, circumnavigation was huge!

A couple of posts I thought it'd be worth responding to...

Azza's power has been climbing constantly, but not really spiking. Thanks to my scouting galleys (which must annoy Azza) I have visibility on 4 of his closest mainland border cities. It looks to me that Azza is currently allocating his units fairly evenly across the empire for defensive purposes, but of course there might be an extra stack of 10 axes wandering somewhere..
Your bloody scouting galleys were the reason my military was so large!

Unfortunately there simply is not a single stone resource anywhere near my borders (and I'm quite stretched in every direction already). I haven't even built Moai due to lack of stone, which is extremely painful. When I finish my universities I'm trying to get stone resource for 10 turns with some kind of expensive trade (for Oxford + Moai), but there is no certainty that anyone is willing to trade it to me even if I offer an significant amount of gold..
I only considered claiming the 2nd set of stone on what would've been Sareln's island because you took the islands between us, forcing me to expand in other directions. So again, your own fault.
I didn't quote it, but from memory you mentioned something about my REXing being potentially threatening with worker support. Well, that just so happens to be exactly the type of support my REXing did not have. On top of that, I built reasonably well spread cities, so my workers had a lot of travel to do. Your graphs showing tech vs pop really did illustrate a difference of strategy between Sareln and yourself vs Viqsi and me, and it seems pretty clear which way worked out better in this game. Unfortunately from a competitive end game perspective, your strike on Sareln was brilliant and left you clear in the lead, and from there it was more or less a matter of making sure you didn't blow it.
I'm not sure if you realised, but I had research visibility on you for quite a while, hence why I went down the Mil Sci path. I'd also gotten city visibility on a few of your cities nearish to mine shortly before the war, but I guess the removal of open borders caused me to lose that visibility when you decided that my theft of Viqsi's central city was unacceptable.
Sorry for any perceived slow turn pace from me, I have the occasional tendency to play my PBEM save, then a Pitboss turn, and forget about sending the PBEM save. There's also the occasional remember to update thread but forget to send the save thing that happens too.
Really impressive game overall though, I hope the variable turn pace hasn't dissuaded you from playing more in the future!

Yeah, I got your research visibility every time I ended turn, so I knew what was going on in that area. I was not too worried about rifles, because you were lacking navy and naval techs and I had enough military in the map center if you had decided to approach my cities there. You must have been also suffering for happiness, right? So massive drafting would have also been quite costly.
If the game had continued I think I could have maintained the naval control of the area with destroyers and then I probably would have attacked your island cities one by one. My fronts with Azza and Sareln required quite a bit of units so probably it would have still taken ~10-20 turns before I had become aggressive again. That was the plan anyways..
That's pretty much what I was hoping for. I was indeed suffering after the outer arm of cities was ganked, but at that point I didn't care. Was focused more on "batten down the hatches and LET THEM COME" because it was all I could do. My remaining hope was a Sareln-Azza teamup, but then Azza proposed concession... Oh Well.
I had no real plans whatsoever to attack anyone, honestly. I kept considering it, but never followed up because, well, frankly, my entire economy was built on trade routes, trade routes, more trade routes, and even more trade routes. War was Not Good For Business.
Oh, and I'd almost forgotten - FUCK YOU on circumnavigation. I was ONE TURN AWAY. ONE. DAMN. TURN.
