Trying to not be a Casual-AT. [Spoilers]

my demos are looking like crap right now, but that's mainly because multiple players are size 2 and I've swtiched to hunting.

It's pretty humbling to look back at turn 17 and say 'welp, I can see where this went off the rails'

Fishing was a clear mistake. If I'd gone hunting->mining->BW, I would be in much better shape.

I also need to seriously prioritize my moves. I want, in no particular order:

BW (many forests to chop, some of which must be gone to build cottages)
Pottery (cheap granaries and cottages)
Sailing (whale boats, great lighthouse looks strong)
Writing (cheap libs for an early scientist looks very strong)
Hunting (many pastures)
Animal Husbandry (3rd city site looks like a deer fest)
Masonry (if I choose to go great lighthouse)
Archery (at some point, I'll want them to handle barbs/opportunistic opponents)

That's 6 techs of immediate use and 2 more that could be useful.

ok - so, I have fishing, Wheel, Agri and mining.

I need Hunting for 1 food source at the cap and one near the cap. Clearly, that is next.
I need BW to chop out some of these forests and to whip.
I need pottery for cheap granaries to fuel expansion.

After that, I probably need AH for the deer for city #3/4 (I could send city #3 up to get either the 2nd pig or the rice spot, or whatever is down south if it doesn't have deer.

So, I think the change to Hunting is the right one, though it does mean I don't get to change to slavery while settler #2 is moving. That's a pain, but ok.

Huh. I'm having a hard time getting a 3rd city out before t50, which seems slow to me. It's possible that this is entirely because I went fishing first, but it is a real problem.

While I sympathize with Jowy, he's not being accurate whenhe says he signed on at his normal time. The turn before he missed, civ stats has him playing at 1:30 AM or so. The turn rolled at 5:30 AM and then the next turn rolled 26 hours later, about 7:30 am, or 30 hours after he played.

I don't know when he then checked civ stats, because I can never tell how forum time relates to my time relates to civ stats time.

Perhaps the turn before was an anomoly, I dunno. It does suck that he missed his turn.

I am doing some casual sims, cause I cant' figure out where city #2 goes - I think it's going 1E of the sheep - that settles fast and has some good tiles to share with the cap for awhile.

btw - I apologize for having a very boring writeup - but, once again, nothing is happening. I ran into a lion and a bear to the NE, so I moved my scout away from there, cause I don't want it to die, so I'm covering old ground AGAIN. I'm buidling a settler, so nothing is really happening. I have some plans that I'll try to post to give lurkers something to see, but there's literally nothing going on...

Bare in mind no 6 fh yield tiles at the cap and slow tech rate!

yeah - and awkwardness with the forests.

One thing to note is that everyones score went up by 7 this turn, which means that I think everyone has a similar-ish start.

Man, right now, I wish I had gone for an early UU, or maybe a naval one. I am not sure I've seen a site that works that isn't coastal. Org for cheap lighthouses would be nice in this game. Well, protective archers will help keep me safe and if tech rates stay low and I can bee-line them, Janissaries will dominate the battlefield for some time, since they have no real counter until the other side gets muskets.

T2, The One With an Opponent

We are no longer in isolation!!

Ichabod is:

Demos shot:

Opponent analysis:

Ichabod and bobchillingsworth: Wang Kon (Fin/Pro) of Byzantium (Agri/Wheel), Cataphract/hippodrome. Phracts are still dangerous, but they aren't quite as strong. Pro is good, fin looks to be less useful in this game. That said, Banks are quick after guilds, so there is synergy. The Hippodrome is mediocre.

LB and Janissaries should be all I need to counter phracts, though. straight up, a jannissary in a city is 13.5 vs. a phract, so that's an even up battle even before hills, walls or culture. or pther promos. Phracts are expensive to kill in the open, though.

Ichabod is (I believe) a good player, though I don't think he's one of the top level guys. I played agianst bob in a recent pbem and I didn't think he was great. he was certainly better than i was, though wink

I think these guys are in the list of top contenders to win this thing.

T24, The One Where the Map, It Trolls Me

First off, I noticed this earlier, but didn't comment - what's up with those 2 tiles that are cut off by the mountains? There better not be a resource in those, cause I don't think we can ever hook them up except by settling.

Also, note the fish. Unless there's something to the south, the only way to get that fish is by setting on the cow.

Finally, more score this turn from the creative civ. Note that Dreylin grew to size III.

The name of that monster on the sheep is Garmr. Garmr is from Norse mythology and is a dog that guards Hel's gates. Sort of like Cerberus, but fewer heads, I guess.

Speaking of monsters, I never did look up the NE one:

The Mapinguari is south american, from the rainforest. It's a an ape-like being that moves slowly and has a fetid odor. Apparently, there are some theories that it's a memory of mega sloths from 10,000 BC or so.

Demos:

I'll get a couple of cities down here - one for the cow and one for the clam. I don't know if that sheep is on an island or not.
