[few spoilers] Fortified settling party Boldly Going Nowhere, dies in place.

T50

It's been a bit of a slog to get here, but we've played 50 turns. Here are some screenshots for my opponents to use against me.

I thought that hooking up the whales would yield +1 food, making growth in 2t but I just the hammer and commerce. The extra food comes with a LH. I'll swap some tiles around to adjust.

I'm deciding whether I ought to grow this to size 5 or leave it at size 4 and move the garrison out next turn when the whales are available. I need to continue to expand as aggressively as I can. It has not escaped my attention that Gawdzak has staked his claim to the central area between us. I need to claim my side of the river now, so these tall cities will push steady, constant workers and settlers. I have two axes now, which is sufficient for the times.

Chariots, however, are a new thing, with horses first available this turn. I'll investigate Gawdzak's posture and make a move if there is an opening, if for no other reason than to have something to do. This game has been pretty lackluster so far IMO.

Gawdzak settled on the PH, the obvious place. I can, and probably will, counter by settling SW of the sugar. Gawdzak is CRE/IND, so he could easily dump a wonder in that city (Hey, plenty of forests near his expansion options while my jungle grows apace. Good for him! bang ) which would cause me some problems. Still, I can't just surrender this area completely so I'll carve out something of worth.

Three cities each. I put myself slightly behind his expansion rate due to geography right now. Darius is a notoriously slow starter.

Exploration to the south toward NylesStandish, who just couldn't take a hint and had to get his scout killed. I don't know enough about him to guess whether he'll hold a grudge or if he'll make me come after him later. Also highlighted here, I stopped EP spending at 43 in time for Nyles to notice and adjust his spending if he wanted to avoid wasting any EP on me. Maybe he just didn't check that closely. Not a big deal. Either this is absent of thought on his part or an indication that he hates me. I'm guessing the former.

His expansion has been a bit slower, inexplicably, as he is IMP/PRO. He should be owning things right now. Unless his start is awful, which I doubt given the similarity of Gawdzak and my starts, he ought to have had a fourth city by now if he pushed reasonably hard for it.

Yuri is doing whatever Yuri does. Maybe he has a settler out as we speak. He did grow his capital tall (size 4) early so he's probably working lots of hammers and will slingshot ahead in city count pretty soon. If not, he's in trouble. Also noted, he has not revolted to slavery yet.

Graphs:

I settled on my bronze, Gawdzak hooked his up a couple of turns later. I probably would have done the same if I could have had pigs and bronze in the same city. wink

I don't intend to cause alarm with a higher power rating but I'm fine with it if I do. My second axe is ready EoT. They're convenient hammer sinks as I grow my cities now that I can't build warriors for cheap garrisons anymore. Mapmaker comment: putting bronze on the river is nice, I appreciate the free commerce, you know, if I hadn't settled on the bronze, but I don't like removing the choice from the player. If I want to push my luck and not hook up the bronze with a road, that ought to be my call. Minor map nitpick. Otherwise the map seems ok.

Is that a monument just ticking up for Nyles? I'll be interested to see what his land looks like. Needing to build a monument this early tends to slow things considerably.

I'm satisfied with my position for now. Nothing special, but the terrain hasn't really been working in my favor so far. And Darius is slow, etc.

Someone else has a pretty good second city at size 4. It isn't Yuri, based on population from the demos.

Any questions? My basic plan going forward is to continue claiming land as fast as I can (not exactly breakneck pace so far) and see where opportunities to improve my position may arise. The land to the south looks like safe backfill that I can settle in a choke against Nyles, so I'll push north, northwest, and east initially. I doubt I get a religion immediately. Maybe later with CoL or Philosophy. One of the PHI civs ought to get to Taoism first though.

Met Brick and a murderous bear is still spawn busting for me. That's all.

Operation Grow Some is nearly complete.

The spear in Alamagordo is Just In Case. I'll swap to a granary there next, as well as in Albuquerque until it grows to size 6 and starts churning out my next settler. I'll have grown to cap with lots of mines available to work so I'll spare the whip until I see need to flay the backs of pour souls destined for the afterlife, probably when I unlock another happy resource and want to whip/overflow into the granary. I don't have a micro plan so I'm just winging it here. No idea where I'm going next except to put a city in the north and shove some units into it for Gawdzak to admire. To that end, another unit EoT to swell the ranks of the largest (tied) army in the world.

You only get the demos when they're good. These are good enough. smug

Gawdzak continues to push all of his cities in my direction.

It is a very good location for him, and for me. I feel I fairly conceded the T45 location and left a good buffer by not settling first ring against his second ring on the line south of the river. My chariot sits atop my preferred settling location, which provides a safe border for both of us. But I'm not willing to concede this entire region, particularly since it has more forests than I've seen anywhere else aside from my capital which has been laid bare by chops already. So I'm moving my axes north and will swap builds to military if he goes ahead and plops down this city despite my warning. I expect him to go ahead and plant but this is going to be bad for both of us.

Gawdzak, play smart. We are the two best players in this field and can narrow the competition to just us for the win if we cooperate. Or you can choose to open things up for everyone else by forcing a stupid little war. rolleye

Did you leave the chariot in place?

No. I moved it north to see how weakly held his fourth city is. His power is considerably lower than mine and I only have 2 axes and 2 chariots. I've seen a spear and not much else from him. I'm moving axes north and will build a spear or two as necessary. I don't mind ruining my game, I'm not super invested tbh.

Civstats confirms that Gawdzak did go ahead and plant so here we go. Wheeeee. hammer

This game is becoming very annoying.

Not unsurprisingly, I'm going to have a hard time dislodging Gawdzak from his perch. The barbs are not helping me.

He moved a spear to cover both cities to prevent me flanking behind with the chariot. Easy decision. I decided it won't help me any to have my forces scattered and spawnbusting barbs for him so I'll circle back around to rejoin my other troops.

Other troops that are not massing but are rather diverted dealing with barbs. This is going to give Gawdzak time to pop borders and bring in his newly whipped reinforcements. Probably he would have had time anyway. When I rolled the turn both barbs advanced toward Brownsfield so I'm going to have to attack out with the chariot (~70-something%) and then promo-heal. Or, quite possibly, lose, endure some pillaging, and whip an axe in two turns while my expansion is completely derailed.

I don't think I had given much detail as to why I don't want to cede that city location to Gawdzak. Aside from it being a strong city for me, his current placement isolates me from all land west of my current cities due to the lake and mountain tiles cutting access over land. I don't want to have a seafaring colony isolated on my own contiguous landmass. Unfortunately there may not be anything I can do about the city for now except make Gawdzak regret having the hassle of a constant turn split and building more units. If I'm unable to take the city now then I'll harass him at every step until I am able take it later.

I have the spear ready to 2-pop whip just in case Gawdzak comes my way but I seriously doubt he is planning to do that. He's going to have a much easier time holding what he's already claimed than doing anything to me. I should have whipped this turn anyway but was hurried (I forgot to move one of my workers because of the big red button screaming at me to end turn) while playing. I'd like to make this whip the granary. We'll see how I feel next turn. I don't have a plan here so it's all whim.

Nyles has started putting full EP into me again. I'm annoying him with my warrior, having pushed his workers off three tiles now I think. He placed two warriors onto the jungle hill to block me but didn't declare war so I ascended. If he declares he'll have a tough time killing me even with those two warriors because I have a promo and one of his warriors is at half health. I'm just trying to scout a trade route and then I'll leave him alone. He isn't so interesting that I'm going to needlessly poke him in the eye forever, just long enough to get a route. But I'm enjoying annoying him a bit. nod The good news is that if he does declare war I have two jungle hills to choose from and hopefully either will give me sight for a trade route.

If you were to take the city would you burn it or keep it?
