Yuris125 and a fancy headdress. Aztecs in Civ6 PBEM
|
|
The first question always is - why did I chose the civ I chose, Aztecs in this case. Usually I would have a long argument with a variety of pros and cons, but not this time. I actually haven't played Civ6 after the first few games during the post-release hype period, so have no idea what is good and what isn't, even less so what's good in MP. But Aztecs felt good to me in the one game I played with them, so I picked them for this first PBEM. Logic
![]() Aztecs' strength is in going wide, as one luxury gives amenities to 6 cities instead of 4 (at least on standard sized maps, not sure if it scales). So that's the high level game plan - expand, expand, defend new cities, expand some more. Pretty typical for a Civ game I would say Despite me liking Civ5 more than many at RB, I never really came to terms with the tall empire game style, and will happily go wide in Civ6 as wellThat's it for the opening words. We are off! ![]() This is actually not an amazing start by Civ6 standards, as it's relatively low on production. It does have explosive early growth, but only two hammer-producing tiles in the second ring, and the stone in the third ring. Not ideal. Problem is, alternatives aren't much better. Moving 1NW doesn't add much (it adds 1 hill in the second ring, but loses easy access to seafood and immediate boost to Sailing). Looking at this start with fresh eyes, I'm actually thinking maybe losing a turn to move NE this turn and NW next turn and settle W of the horses was a good idea - but there's a little too much hidden area for my liking. And, well, settling in place isn't bad - high-food capital means it should be easy to grow to size 6 and get the Early Empire eureka. And if I do intend to play wide, maybe it's better to save inland tiles for one of the next cities All in all, I decided to settle in place. We'll see if I end up regretting it ![]() With barbs off, I didn't see any reason not to go WorkerBuilder first. Research went towards Irrigation first (I will get a boost for it by farming the rice resource), so the plan for this Builder is to improve the rice, the citrus, and the horses
Have to say, a game without barbs must be very boring to lurk right now. This is what I uncovered so far
![]() Looks like I started on the eastern edge of the eastern leaf of the clover. Also looks like I need to cross the desert in the west to make contact with others. I don't really want to do it just yet - would rather study immediate surroundings and plan my expansion first Otherwise, there's not much to say. You guys have any questions?
Who will you eat first?

The first big news of the game
![]() A trade city state, so I immediately get +4 gpt for free. I will get a second envoy as well, as their quest is to trigger a boost for Irrigation, which I was planning to do anyway. That being said, capturing this city state and turning their units into my Builders would likely be a better play than sending envoys to them. I'll get some Jags ready after that first Builder
Finished scouting my starting area. Dotmap more or less builds itself
![]() The capital + 2 planned cities + Lisbon should be a decent early game core The easternmost wheat remains unused, but not much I can do about it - there's not enough space for anything more than a fishing village. Which I might found eventually, but not any time soon
I would move one tile off coast. Water tiles are week in Civ6. By moving you would get hill tile in first ring for production. It is strong capital what matters in my opinion. Also you can spare of spending beakers in to sea technologies. Your expansion plan looks good - if it was much bigger map with expectation of having lot of cities I would keep Lisbon as city state.
Good luck btw, I had to withdraw from this MP due to sickness/work duties, but I will enjoy to be the one that criticize wink
Do you mean the capital? I think founding on the coast has benefits, as it allows to build ships without a Harbour district, which I think is not that high of a priority. The tile 1W of the horses was likely a better spot, as it has more production potential - but obviously I didn't know that on T1
I can't move the future cities by much, the spacing requirement of 4 tiles between cities gives very little wiggle room |
Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis |
