You do realize this is a toroidal map. The maintenance costs really get high even on Prince. I don't mind overlap, but I don't want to be wasteful. The dotmap above already has more overlap than it needs, probably. I think we are closer than you think to growing vertical.

Every city in Darrell's dotmap has two workable food resources, except stone/fish and incense/clam. I think cramming in any more cities than that with maintenance would be a mistake. Did you see the figures I did on what 10 cities will cost us, and that was for a bunch of size 1-4 cities, let alone when they get to size 7-10.

50 commerce = what, 18 three commerce tiles worked? And then there are trade routes, per city boni such as religion happiness and resource happiness that we can only increase by planting more cities and with court houses we can handle the losses late game. Early game it won't make any difference until we actually plat the cities anyway. So that decrease in commerce you gave doesn't include the net bonus from trade routes. And then we are comparing, what, 12 cities with 9, ish?

However, I think we can agree that pink and blue are pretty much set unless we see something really weird to the NW. So we have time on those discussions.

I'd like to see a Krill dotmap, because just looking at Darrell's with your suggestions is kind of awkward. For instance, 1N of copper will cause red to have to move 1SE, losing both corn and clams.

Need more information...we need to know the entire coastline, and the location of all food resources. We need a thorough scouting plan.

What do you expect from someone with a hump on their back smile. Scouting is a huge problem. Every Warrior I built but one went towards a happy garrison. Every workboat went towards a food resource. I agree we need more map info but I doubt it will change the southern portion of the dotmap. For sure though Pink, Blue and Orange aren't going to change. You could argue we should found Orange instead of Red for that reason. And, it actually makes the Worker usage much better to focus on the north.

I should also mention my tech path was for Monotheism (assuming we could land Judaism), then Sailing. Sailing is not needed due to the complete road network, so really we are looking at Writing and is already in and Mathematics is due in 4.

This lack of scouting is something that we are going to have to rectify.

What do we need? The entire continent/island uncovered, but specifically, the NW uncovered before we settle Blue, and the South we we settle city 6.

We also need a navy to explore off shore islands, to see if there are any resources we need there (gold, silver, ivory specifically, plus possibly horses). Later resources, well, we still want to know but are of slightly less importance until we can hook them up but we have to be wary of losing them to faster opposition.

So, what sorts of units do we really need? IMO, we need a galley/warrior combo, and another scouting warrior. We could feasibly get away with a workboat and warrior for the least hammer cost...but that is a folly IMO. That galley/warrior pair can scout out islands much better. We could also get a workboat instead of the warrior to scout around the island/continent faster.

I agree pink and orange don't move, but blue could I would think, depending on scouting.
1N would still be coastal, and pick up a stranded grass tile.

1E or 1N both pick up the grassland and the fish, so there is flexibility there.
