Given his reputation for map-bashing, I simply had to paste in Krill's opening salvo
Quote:Krill: That's a pretty bad start
If I were kind I merely call it unviable
as it is, you can't slave on it
and you can't really grow
there are no hammer tiles
until BW so you have to tech it
I'd actually ask for a new map
because that start isn';t fun
and is so weak that it'd probably lose you the game if you made 1 mistake
and it makes you choose fishing simply in the hope that there is a seafood 2S of the settler

At least it is likely that the other folks' starts are similar. So if this start is "weak" or "bad" hopefully Commodore isn't sitting over there with wet corn and riverside gems or something.
Another thought I had was settling inland 1E on the PH. But having been burned by moving in PB4, I think I'll likely SIP

My main complaint is the coast 2S of the capital. It could have fish, which changes the start enormously, that's creating a huge gamble on if you start with fishing or not.

Putting fish there would be cruel and (IMO) unsporting by the mapmaker. So I'm going to go off the assumption that there is not fish there.
And if there is, then I'll join you in mapmaker-complain mode

But there's always someone else waiting at the altar.
My thoughts:
1) Sury of Maya
2) Izzy of Carthage
3) Washington of...hm...Portugal is tempting there, b/c of Cha Carracks for Fun And Profit.

Okay Vikings are I think deserved of #1. Inca are obviously a great civ (and still should be useful on a heavy water map), but Aztecs are really bad. I mean at least he acknowledged it was but man.
I guess if this is a high-whip map, Sacrificial Altar could be good, but Jaguar isn't very useful on this map and they've got the worst 2 starting techs (Myst / Hunt)

In the end it came down to
* Bismark of Mali (religious wonder strategy - which I thought was probably strongest but I just did that in PBEM17)
* Izzy of Ottos (Spiritual and with good starting techs)
* Sury of Maya (Cheap ball courts)
I went with Izzy of Ottos (of course)
It is my goal (we shall see) to not do any early or middle wonders and just expand and play a "standard" game. We shall see....
My picks are
bismark of inca, mehmed of carthage, napoleon of aztec and sury (!) of vikings
