Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

[SPOILERS] Isabella of Carthage, starring Ellimist, SleepingMoogle, and Nicolae

SleepingMoogle Wrote:Okay, first impression is that this start is giving me a headache already. At a glance the Worker runs out of things to do very quickly, and it comes down to following up Agriculture with BW for chops, or the Wheel -> Pottery for roads and Cottages. I'm leaning to the former since we don't need roads right away), but early chops don't really do us any good unless we want another Worker (who also will have very little to do until Pottery finishes), and considering the food surpluss, getting to size 4 quickly and 2-pop whipping a Settler feels like a better plan (depending on what scouting turns up of course).

In short: this start is evil. lol

Tentative techs: Agriculture -> BW -> Wheel -> Pottery -> Writing (?)
Builds: Worker -> Workboat -> Worker (chop) -> Size 4 Settler (2-pop whip) -> Overflow into Granary (?)

Okay I do like prioritizing bronze working then granaries. With corn and fish both, the whip will be important. Let's follow this plan right now.

Should i send the warrior west or north or stay home?

When will people take the hint that I'm not the best person to ask to make a map tongue

We have the save. I tried to play it before leaving for work, but was foiled by an uncooperative internet. I should be able to get to it after work unless one of you does first.

Oka, there is something still wrong with the wifi on my computer. I can still access the wifi just fine with my phone, but the computer is unable to for some reason.
Could one of you do T0? I'll figure out how to fix this but it seems more complicated than I first thought.
Tomorrow, if I can't fix it, I'll see if I can download the save to a flash drive from another computer.

I'll see what I can do. We moved the warrior N from the starting position on the first turn right?

(I prefer scouting around for the moment by the way. The first couple of turns should be safe at least, so let's move the Warrior NW onto the forested hill next turn and get a better view of the north).

I think Krill has a policy of making the spacing between civs big enough so that one does simply walk into [strike]Mordor[/strike] other capitals.

A interesting point to note is that we have the exact same food, hammer and land figures as Kuro. That is a fairly good indicator that we have the same starts.

Okay, from what we have seen so far, it looks like this will be a relatively water-rich and hammer-poor map. My basic plan for our early game strategy is to play to our strengths, and to play to the map.

Some thoughts:
Navies will be important. I'd put a high priority on winning the circumnavigation race and maintaining enough ships to avoid being boated.
Also there is land (presumably) offshore. When something similar happened in PB2, the islands were relatively rich and worth colonizing.

We are expansive, so ideally we will be able to get granaries up quickly and use the whip for infrastructure(such as Cothons.)
We are Carthage, so we'll put a priority on coastal cities, trade routes, and cheap Cothons.

We are spiritual. I've seen some impressive stuff with spiritual, and we ought to prioritize things that will enable spiritual shenanigans.
Technologies that enable civics/religion will be a priority. At the very least we'll gain a 1 turn advantage over other civs whenever we adopt a "must have" civic like slavery or bureaucracy. I intend to leverage the trait a bit more than that, however.
The especially useful civics to alternate between will be slavery/Org religion and caste/pacifism. Caste system will even enable us to pop borders without monuments(in new cities).
If we go for any early wonders, I think the Pyramids are the prime candidate.

I was trying to come up with ideas for city names, and one possibility that I liked was to name the cities after prominent stars. Sirius, Spica, Polaris, Regulus, Rigel, Arcturus, Betelgeuse, etc.
Astronomy has a strong connection to seafaring, which seems to be a theme we're going with so far: Carthage with their cothons and the Mediterranean, and Isabella with the exploration and colonization of the Americas.

Also, I'll be able to play the next turn. I'm still having internet issues on my primary computer but I can access email with my old computer and use a flash drive to shuttle the save back and forth.
