I've just been able to check out your thread Yuri, to try and see what the issues are with advanced start. The problem you ascribe to advanced start affecting scouting is actually because of the Classical era start, and it gets progressively "worse" the further up the tech tree the game starts. Advanced starts contributes a small amount, but that's more through the fact that leader traits pay less for certain items hence can afford to invest more into scouting, but that's actually bringing classical back into alignment with ancient era balance more than anything. It is not actually fair to describe it as a problem IMO (post #77 in your thread). Gathering information to make strategic decisions is not free, but the personal example you gave doesn't follow: You knew you didn't have horses by settling south, yet you still settled south and didn't prioritise finding and ensuring access to them. Advanced start isn't the reason that happened, and I can't see how playing with a standard start would have been any better? The challenge with the desert, and distance to a horse resource, would have been the same either way. Personally, I'd vote for advanced start again, same number of points, monarch.
Likewise, but that can be a vote.
I will say though, having played an unaccelerated start classic era game in 82, you either want advanced start with raging barbarians or you definitely want the raging barbarians off, you don't want them to actually win the game.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.
I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.
I actually forgot we played this with advanced start. I suppose I have a preference to using it again.
Back home, jet lagged all to hell.

The pacing of these games has been throwing me off for months. This game got to an actual space victory before 78 which started sooner in real time wasn't even to Liberalism yet. Commodore's Culture victory came 4t ahead of the space victory. I'm fine with Ref's map, I'm in favour of advanced start with same points/setup we had for PB80 (420 points, must buy 1 city, 1 worker, 1 archer, and 1 scout with 220 dicretionary points). Also in favour of raging barbs.

+1 to raging barbs regardless of settings.
Technically it was [1 city and settler or 2 cities]. The 467 points is what's set in game to give 420 points at monarch (the actual points scale for AI difficulty purposes). |
