It's not necessarily the amount of players, but how they line up. 1 turn a day is pretty much what you have to hit to keep interest in a game, and it's easier to hit that with 6 players that are spread around the globe than with 4 guys that are all on the eastern seaboard and want to play at 2000 every night.

I'm ready to make the map. I want to be a bit more convinced that you all agree on the setup first though.

Two identical 4-player games, with leaders/civs chosen by the lurkers? Make sure that is what you all want.

Awesome. I don't mind lurker-pick, it has the same effect on me as picking random on an MP game. At least it won't give me Charlie (please don't give me Charlie).

As a lurker, can I request it be two forums, 18 and 19? I eventually stopped following PBEM 4 just because I kept getting mixed up who was in which game and I'd rather not lose track of these as well.
