Turn 115
I've really not been paying attention to this game, not since the iron locations screwed any chance of getting rid of GKC before Construction. So I've teched there, bulbed Theology for Theocracy, whipped a bunch, and now I have a stack. I declared war a few turns ago, and use 3 Accuracy cats (and an unpromoted cat) to remove the walls defense.
This is where it leaves us:
Battle report
CR2 catapult versus CG2 Archer, 54% retreat: retreat, Archer 43hp, Catapult 20hp.
CR2 catapult versus CG1 Archer, 74.8% retreat: retreat, Archer 37hp, Catapult 82hp.
CR2 Catapult versus 0XP Archer, 81.3% retreat: retreat, Archer 34hp, Catapult 83hp.
CR2 Catapult versus 0XP Archer, 81.3% retreat: retreat, Archer 34hp, Catapult 32hp.
At this point, I still need to kill 12 units. I have 3 Jags, 2WE, 2 spears, 4 axes, and 12 HA available so I expect the city to die, the question is how I intend to defend the area. Hell, I originally intended to raze the city but now I'm not even sure about that. I think I want to keep both WE full healthy, so best case scenario I have to use 3 HA if I don't lose any units.
A CR2 jag gets 99% odds, and an unpromoted axe gets 80% against the 2.3 health archer. Really it's just a case of optimization at this point.
3XP, unpromoted Jag versus 76hp, 0XP archer, 95.2%: Win, Jag 52hp, 3 hits, 2XP.
CR2 Jag versus 60hp axe, 99.9%, Win, Jag 100hp, 1XP.
Now there are three spears that are being annoying, two at 3.6 and 3.1 strength respectively. I don't want to use my axes or the remaining jag as they hit archers, but I still have catapults left, so I promote one of them to CR1 to take the odds from 85% to 98% and see what happens; it swaps to target an archer. Whatever, I'll take it, I'm just trying to save units at this point.
CR1, 5XP Catapult versus 64hp archer, 98.1% retreat: retreat, archer 42hp, Catapult 83hp.
Now the unpromoted catapult gets 94% odds on the spear.
Unpromoted 5XP catapult versus 78hp spearman, 94.6% retreat: retreat, Spear 34hp, Catapult 83hp.
Now it's just cleanup.
C1 Axe versus 52hp archer, 97.2%, Win, Axe 83hp, 1hp.
Unpromoted Axe versus 50hp CG2 archer, 96.7%, Win, Axe 66hp, 2XP.
Unpromoted 5XP Jag versus 67hp C1 spear, 99.9%, Win, Jag 100hp, 1XP.
C1 Spear versus 50hp C1 spear, 97.4%, Win, Spear 82hp, 2XP.
Unpromoted 1XP Spear versus 25hp Archer, 98.5%, Win, Spear 100hp, 1XP.
C1 Axe versus 25hp CG1 archer, 99.9%, Win, AXe 84hp, 1XP.
Unpromoted Axe versus 25hp Archer, 99.9%, Win, Axe 84hp.
That means all the slowmovers have attacked and either won or retreated. To finish off I have to use HA.
Unpromoted 3XP HA versus 25hp C1 Spear, 99.8%: Win, HA 82hp, 1XP.
Unpromoted 3XP HA versus 25hp Archer, 99.9%: Win, HA 100hp, 1XP.
Unpromoted 5XP WE versus 25hp Archer, 99.9%: Win, WE 100hp, 1XP, capture Utica.
This is what I see:
Not worth keeping it so I raze and will resettle 1SW to take the banana.
This is what I see hiding behind the city:
Decent stack. Glad I didn't run in with my HA as they would have been obliterated, so now I'm just going to step back, settle for the gold, whip 10 WE to sit on top of my stack, and then walk into his land with my 35 odd units.
A perfect turn. Should have lost a catapult or two, but every battle was over 50% odds.
FWIW, it's a bad map because even though GKC misplayed by settling forward into holy city culture, both of us have been screwed on land. Either one of us needs to kill the other just to have a reasonable amount of land. I know superdeath and AT have masses of land as Ruff is dead, but Cairo has more land than we do.
GKC is still dead though, just he is taking as much of his population with him as possible.
