And now Iron Working!
We could be in a teeny bit of trouble. Empirate is Genghis Khan. Let's hope he's not feeling inspired by his leader. His city of Aluminum is quite an encroachment, but I've been dilly dallying for too long. Well, maybe this game gets exciting. (For me, I mean. Cornflakes killed somebody's city!)

I am mysteriously awful at Civ?
The plan is 2 Great Scientists into Academy + Math bulb. I've got the Academy in the capital now, so I'm saving gold for another 12 turns until the Math bulb comes in and I can burn through the bank on Currency and Construction. The beakers going into Iron Working and that went into Archery are from the Scientist specialists. I couldn't think of anything I wanted to idle on more than those two techs.
This plan is bad, and I feel bad. But if there's one thing I know how to do, it's stick to a plan because of all the cost I've sunk into it.

Assuming math bulb is correct (which on this difficulty it may be), why not idle on metal casting?

I was on it for a turn or two, actually. I've been really bad about reporting this pitboss. Basically, I recently founded a city on the eastern shore of the northern continent (3E of Edine in the June 27th report). This city revealed a decently sized jungled land mass a short galley ride away. This feels like the map makers created a contested but tech-gated area, so I decided to hop off Metal Casting to Iron Working. If I'm lucky, I'll even have an iron resource nearby for some extra hammers. Either way, I probably don't complete IW for a long time, since I need to get through the big Classical economic techs first.
This is mostly guesswork. I've come to realize how much of an instinctive feel for a certain kind of Civ4 game I've developed. That instinct is pretty useless on this unique Deity/Small 20 player map setup.

These Civforum players and their axe aggression!
I haven't been paying close enough attention to this game. Empi rolled the previous turn but didn't play a double turn. I should've known this was nefarious. Now, I don't know if he's actually aiming for war or if he just want to settle, but the lack of double-move forebodes the worst.
Even if he is just settling, it's an aggressive city site. Oh well. I'm confident I can outpace him and make gains later. He has a bunch of cities. We can hope his economy crashes.

I think you meant axression.
But to be fair. Looking at all the last 20 PBs or so I also often found pre-catapult wars.

I fell off lurking this one but I wanted to say that you actually look quite strong here. The Academy -> Math bulb -> quick Currency/Construction plan is great, you have enough cities that you can probably take some territory with the classic Civforum axe/cata stack. Curious to see where you take it!
...well, unless you die to Empirate.

Sorry, folks. I've really been neglecting this game. Empirate did not attack. In fact, he offered some health resource trades, so I think we're ok for now, although he has still fortified his axe in a way that suggests he doesn't trust me.
Next turn is the fun turn. Our second Great Scientist completes and we can finally stretch our legs and go for a run.
