It's weird to think I've been playing multiplayer Civ4 here for over 10 years now. In August 2011 I finally got brave enough to join a game and ded-lurked luddite, way back in PBEM23.
We did ok, but the game was mostly memorable for us sending 80+ knights through our neighbor mackoti's lands to try and take the game leaders, Novice & SevenSpirits, down a peg. They were ... less than pleased with us. The game almost ended there. I came into that game with a chip on shoulder like I had to prove myself, and so took things very personally when disagreements came up in the organizing thread. I was also very invested in micro-managing for every little possible advantage.
I like to think that I've outgrown both those tendencies over the last 10 years.
Why do I continue to play? Probably because you guys keep being awesome to play with. Even when I've been a jerk or a bad teammate in the past. I'm not sure if I'll be around for another 10, but then again I never thought I'd play this long to start with.
Let's have some fun.

Odd. I'd thought you had been around longer than that.
Last winter was 10 years since I signed up for FFH III but I'd thought you had been around longer than I.

What happened there on the screenshot? Is that a ship on land directly underneath the word "Press" from Printing Press?

I would say the more interesting questions to ask are "What has changed in my life in those 10 years?" and "What do I have to sacrifice to continue to play?"

I had been doing the single player Epics and Adventures before that, and then I stepped away a bit and lurked from the shadows while the multiplayer side of things was in its early years.

What has changed over the last 10 years? Gone are the days of lots of roommates in big houses to scrap together rent; I live by myself. I have a dog, that's a responsibility I didn't think I would have taken up 10 years ago. No more near-minimum wage jobs; it seems like I've finally settled in on a career. I've found and lost love. I became a backpacker and have done adventures I didn't think I could have back then. I've slowed down a lot, I can feel that change. It's harder to keep up physically with some of the activities I've enjoyed doing, but it just demands more discipline, and listening more to my body so I don't get injured.
I've never been a big extrovert, so I think my sacrifices are other diversions. Other video games, movies, books. Keeping up with the news.
Sometimes physical activities like running, but I do less of that lately anyway (darn foot injury never quite seems to be healed). I definitely play less now than I used to, both Civ here and games in general. The dog takes a lot of my evening up now, between his walk and spoiling him because it's just the two of us in the evenings. He's not a very good strategist anyway. Better tactician: he does good flushing out small mammals from bushes when I'm not paying attention. It's only a matter of time before he nabs one of the neighborhood squirrels or rabbits.
